I closed the first Oblivion Gate last night. That was pretty intense. Either I've not mastered combat yet or I'm just weak, but every single battle took a ton out of me.... I was able to beat the gatekeeper guy with the sigil key only because I managed to get him to step off the spiral staircase and fall to his death.....and then, when faced with the spiral staircase up to the place where I needed to close the gate.....I just ran like hell and avoided all 4-5 guys trying to kill me. Not sure if that's good strategy or the coward's way....but I was successful! Oblivion gates always made me nervous. You've only got like another 20 to go. The first one I did I accidentally killed one of my men and didn't know. I completed the mission and then was arrested. That sucked almost as much as the Cubs and cartoony characters with spikey hair that talk like socially-awkward teenagers.

20 more?
Ugh.
I'm hoping to get to a point like I did in Morrowind, where my character became pretty bad-a$$. I was in way over my head in the first Oblivion gate (although, granted, I -did- get it closed).
I'm still stuck with half leather/half chain mail armor....and largely unimpressive weaponry. Hopefully I'll find better.

You will. Even though the monsters in the world scale up as you do (something else I hate about the game, but I digress), I found that it was much easier later in the game once I'd gotten my hands on better gear, better skills, better spells, and a stockpile of cash to go around. I'm still stuck with half leather/half chain mail armor....and largely unimpressive weaponry. Hopefully I'll find better. Don't bother upgrading your gear until you hit level 20. Once you get there, there's an Ayleid ruin at the point where the road to Bruma intersects the road that circles the Imperial City. I don't remember the name, but it shouldn't be hard to find. It's a bandit lair, and all the bandits contained therein wear light armor. Once you get to level 20, they start dropping the really good stuff, and it's really easy to gear yourself up there and make a whole mess of cash real quick. And since the bandits don't learn that this hero guy comes down and slaughters them every week or so, they keep coming back and you can repeat the process ad nauseum. It's awesome.

Sweet! Good to know. I picked a class that has turned out not to be ideal with my style (barbarian)....so now I've been trying to build up the skills I tend to neglect like armorer and hand-to-hand.....level advancement just seems to be going slow. I played a Spellsword (I think), and I was able to level up by standing in a guild hall and casting spells over and over again.

Normally I opt for the combat-heavy dude....but I'm finding I really like spellcasting ..... it's MUCH easier in Oblivion for Xbox vs. Morrowind (you had to switch to casting mode or combat mode....whereas now you can do both real easy) Anyway....I wish I had gone Spellsword or something. Armorer sucks. Hand to hand is useless....oh well....

Anyway....I wish I had gone Spellsword or something. Armorer sucks. Hand to hand is useless....oh well.... You only really need one combat skill in your majors, either blunt or edged. Taking more than just the one is a waste of a major slot.

I haven't played in awhile but this talk is giving me the itch. And I'm not talking about the itch Goodzilla gives pre-pubescent girls.

I wasted a whole hour last night trying to find some damn orc for a quest....finally had to give up and started hitting up Crowhaven.
Think I'm up to level 11 now.

I peeked on an FAQ to see what the quest will be, and it sounded painful.....although the reward for helping that duke's wife is 1000 gold. So is it worth 1000 gold? Hmmmm.....

My guess is that it would take 15-20 hours of game play, even with the guide so I took a pass. Although when I get back into the game again I will problem become a vampire just for the heck of it.

I'm worried that I might have, not realizing I had been infected, saved like I normally do....and face going back way too far to undo the vampirism....so I think I'll live with it, do the quest....and such is life. I've been avoiding using guides, on principle, but I'll use the walkthrough to minimize this quest. Damn vampiric monk! I peeked on an FAQ to see what the quest will be, and it sounded painful.....although the reward for helping that duke's wife is 1000 gold. So is it worth 1000 gold? Hmmmm..... Vampire curing update.....
Havoc: the bad news -- it was indeed a pretty boring quest, going from Mage Guild to Mage Guild to buy/steal grand soul gems.....then an ingredient hunt....then killing this tough vampire dude
The good news -- I got it done in about 2-2.5 hrs. Not -horrible-.

Word on the street is that he went to Morrowind, kicked Vivec's a$$, and took over. The City of Vivec is now called The City of Nash. True story.

So I am really tempted to pick this up. What version do you recomend? The basic one or the Game of the Year edition? Are the expansions worth another $30?

So I am really tempted to pick this up. What version do you recomend? The basic one or the Game of the Year edition? Are the expansions worth another $30? I haven't done much with Shivering Islands, so I'll defer to BDS or Havoc on that....but from what I've seen, I'd say -- unless you are tight with cash -- to spend the $30 more. Shivering Islands sounds like it covers a lot of real estate and a lot of quests....the Knights of the Nine thing sounds worth it too. And I'm guessing there were general tweaks and enhancements done overall. If you get it reasonably soon, they have a free download on Xbox Live for a fighter's stronghold, plus a bunch of not-free but still cool stuff.
