Incredible stat of the moment:
Jake Peavy hasn't lost to the Dodgers since Sept. 13, 2003. That's a LOT of damn games.

Go frickin' Padres! Beat the stuffing out of those dirty Brewers! Don't let a team that has Sausage Races keep you out of the playoffs! Beat them, preferably three times, and claim what is rightfully yours!

Knapik, I want you to know that I'm now officially rooting for the Padres to lose tomorrow. It's nothing personal, mind you - I just want to see four teams tied for the Wild Card at the end of the season. That would be righteous.

"Preface: I'm not a big believer that players have that special ability to "raise their game" in "clutch situations"...it hasn't been proven to actually exist, and if anything, that just means they're slacking off the rest of the time. I think, conversely, a lot of talk of players "choking" in the clutch is little more than fluctuations in a small sample of ABs. What's more indicative of A-Rod's ability: 25 PAs in one postseason series or 600+ in the regular season?
That said...if you're going to penalize one closer for big-situation meltdowns, Trevor Hoffman has to be up there. He lost the elimination game for the Pads in the '96 LDS, got bombed by the Yankees in 1998 after blowing two saves in the playoffs before that, and blew last year's All-Star Game in the 9th inning after retiring the first two batters.
I don't believe it's any sort of moral/mental failing on his part, and it's an indication of results rather than ability as most clutch statistics are, but it has to be mentioned." --Me, in the Mets Collapse thread
Kind of another bullet point against Trevor today, no? That was rough.
I would love, love, love for the Mets, Phils, and Rockies to win tomorrow with a Padres loss, which would lead to the following, courtesy MLB.com...
• The Mets and Phillies would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.
• The loser would then enter a three-game mini-tournament for which the Rockies, based on head-to-head records during the regular season, would have the option of needing to win twice at home or once on the road to advance.
• If the Rockies choose to stay home, their opponent would be determined by the wishes of the team with the second-best combined head-to-head record; it'd be the Phillies if they're involved, but the Padres if the Mets drop into the three-way. That team could choose to play at the Rockies on Tuesday, but it's more likely that it would opt for a single game and travel to play the winner of Tuesday's game on Wednesday.
• If the Rockies opt for the one road game, Tuesday's game would feature New York at San Diego, or San Diego at Philly, with the winner hosting Colorado on Wednesday.

That would be crazy, but lost in all the madness is the one, undeniable fact: Cardinals Suck.

Knapaik,
While I agree with BDS that it would be cool to see 4 teams tied for the Wild Card, I am hoping that the Padres win tomorrow.
I watched the end of the Padres-Brewers game today and I couldn't believe how ironic it was when with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th that Tony Gwynn Jr- the son of the best player in Padres' history- delayed the Padres from clinching the playofffs with his RBI tying triple.
But even if the Padres lose with Tomko tomorrow, they are still guaranteed to at least play again on Monday when they will have Jake Peavy, this year's deserving NL CY Young award winner IMO, on the mound in a 1 game playoff.
