Sox fans, it's opening day! Just because Tavarez is our fifth starter is no reason to go into hiding. Tavarez is just keeping that spot warm for you-know-who...

Dice K looked great today. It is the first time since 2002, 5 years ago, that a pitcher had 10 or more strikeouts in their Major League Baseball debut.

Just watched the Sox-Rangers game on ESPN tonight. Schilling certainly redeemed himself after his awful opening day start. A very well-pitched game on both sides, and if Padilla didn't have to face Big Papi in the lineup, the game easily could have gone the Rangers' way.
I started to panic when pitching coach John Farell talked Tito into yanking Schilling after the 7th inning because of his pitch count, despite the fact that Schilling was showing no signs of fatigue as he dominated hitters in the previous two innings. Joel Piniero gave me the mini-heart attack when he had trouble finding the strike zone and walked the first two batters. And I'm sure that bringing Papelbon in for the five-out save was not what Francona had in mind for Papelbon this early in the season, but he really had no choice to get out of the jam.
Man, I love watching the Sox come through. Tek did an excellent job calling the pitches for the final two batters, and you could see Papelbon praising him right after the final strike of the game. Especially the next-to-last batter, Tek stayed with the splitter even when Paps was having trouble locating it, got the count back to 2-2, and BAM, strike three fastball. Well played. V-tek doesn't have a reputation for being one of the best catchers in the game for nothing.

3-3 and ahead of the Yankees by 1/2 a game. Saw the highlights of the game and got scared when they showed Papelbon coming in during the 8th inning. But damn he's good! Would've watched the game but Easter, Sopranos and Entourage took precedent. Sorry Sox!

What is going on with the Brendan Donelly-Jose Guillen confrontation?
Anyway, that makes two strong starts for Josh Beckett - the most overrated pitcher of last year - but starting strong this year. Beckett definitely could have gone longer today, since he only threw eighty-something pitches and wasn't tiring... but Tito said he was trying to get Timlin and Donelly some work. Of course, Donelly ejected himself out of the game.

Of course, Donelly ejected himself out of the game. In regards to yesterday's confrontation between Donelly and Guillen, they've had a personal feud dating back to when they were both teamamtes on the Angels in 2004. Things got worse when Guillen later joined the Washington Nationals and in an inter-league game told his manager Frank Robinson to ask an umpire to check Donelly's glove. The umpire found pine tar on Donelly's glove and Donelly was then ejected and suspended. So there is indeed a history between Guillen and Donelly. Is anyone else also watching the Red Sox game on ESPN 2 tonight? It's Dice K's home debut at Fenway Park but so far Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners currently has a no-hitter going into the 8th inning.

Dice K looked good tonight in his home debut at Boston by pitching 7 quality innings. But Felix Hernandez ("King Felix") of the Seattle Mariners was just awesome tonight in pitching a complete game shutout and giving up only 1 hit and 2 walks. And Felix Hernandez just turned 21 a few days ago!
But I still think the Red Sox look great and will make the playoffs this year.

Johjima completely owned Dice-K. Felix completely owned everyone else. However, I agree that the Sox are still looking like a strong team this year. With Youk batting in front of Ortiz and Manny (and taking 8-9 pitches to soften up the pitcher) and JD Drew protecting them on the other end, once the Big Two catch on, the Sox lineup is going to be tough to beat.
in other news, Moose is on the DL. This pressures the Yankees to step up their offer to Roger Clemens, and the Sox will be more than happy to drive up his price.

I hate Tessie, and they wouldn't stop playing it in '04 when they won...
in other news, man was I stoked after last night's rally against the Yankees. It's great that we have a second line of defense in Hideki Okajima even when Jonathan Papelbon is unavailable. And I was telling a friend that even though we had to preserve a one-run lead in the 9th against Jeter, Abreu, and A-Rod, our own lineup due consisted of Youk, Ortiz, Manny, and Drew, which isn't exactly something to scoff at.
God, I love the Red Sox. Yankees suck.

watching Papelbon stare at the ground, and then slowly turn his glare on to the batter has got to intimidate the batters he faces. I love watching him save games.
Other thoughts: Sloppy outing by Beckett... The Yankees lineup has just owned the Sox rotation so far. Hopefully Dice-K can do better... Okajima continues to look good. I was worried what they would do if Okajima had allowed the runner to reach base in the 8th inning, given Mike Timlin's record of entering games with inherited runners... I'm glad that Manny finally wised up in his last at-bat of the game and got a hit with a single, as he had three deep fly balls in his previous three at-bats.

Wow, 4 home runs in a row in the Third Inning by the Red Sox!
Edit: They just mentioned that this is the first time in Red Sox history that this has ever been done and that it was 27 years ago that the Red Sox last hit even 3 home runs in a row. That's history right there.

I'm still watching the Yankees-Red Sox game on ESPN and, about the 4 consecutive Home Runs the Red Sox hit in the 3rd Inning that I posted about earlier, they said it was only the 5th time in Major League Baseball's history that this has ever been accomplished by any team.
The Dodgers also did hit 4 straight home runs in a game last year and J.D. Drew, who hit the 2nd of the 4 straight home runs tonight, was also one of the 4 Dodgers to do the same thing last year.
It is currently the top of the 7th Inning with the Yankees leading 5-4.

Mike Lowell just hit a 3 run homer (his 2nd home run of the game) off of Scott Proctor to put the Red Sox ahead 7-5.

The Red Sox just defeated the Yankees 7-6. I was surprised to hear it, but this was the first time the Yankeees got swept in Boston since 1990.
Once again, this was a history-making night for the Red Sox with thier 4 straight home runs. No American League team accomplished this since Minnesota in the early 1960s.

One of the most amazing things is that J.D. Drew was one of the 4 LA Dodgers that hit consecutive HR's last season.
Unbelievable!
