So BJ Ryan blew a save, and gave up another earned run. Papelbon further distances himself as the best closer in the game today.
I wonder who will pick up Shea Hillenbrand now that they won't have to give anything up to get him.

After watching tonight's game against the Tribe two thoughts come to mind:
1. David Wells stinks!!!! 2. Big Papi probably has never had to pay for a meal in Beantown in at least 2 yrs!!!!!!!!!!!!!...Tonight was no exception!

Ortiz is rediculously clutch. Too bad the Yankees have no such thing.
Oh wait, thats a good thing. Go Anyone but the Yankees!

Hey man, I live about an hour north of you.
But for some reason I have never rooted for any NY team and I find the most passion when rooting against the NYY.

ugh.. a sloppy game and the MFY are back on top in the standings. It's too bad every team that Epstein talked to were asking for Craig Hansen, John Lester, and Manny Delcarmen. I could see trading away Hansen for a great player, and Delcarmen too, but not all three. Still, while I think that the chances of a trade before the waiver deadline are slim to none (although optimistically I'd like to think more on the "slim" side), here's a rumor on boston.com www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/thebuzz/

you'd think so. The Skankees are nothing but a great slugging team with AAA-level pitching. With the way Randy Johnson has been pitching, no one in the Yankees rotation scares me after Mike Mussina... and Mussina is only a thread away from blowing out his elbow at his tender age (and from how worn out he looked at the end of last season).
Of course, acquiring Bobby Abreu, and with Matsui and Sheffield scheduled to return in a month... that scares the hell out of me.

Here's a bit from ESPN.com's Bill Simmons on David Ortiz becoming the most cluth player in baseball. Thought you BoSox fans migh tbe interested:
Then you have Big Papi, the best clutch hitter of his generation. The Elias Sports Bureau was nice enough to send these numbers along: If Ortiz has one more walk-off hit in 2006, he'll be the first baseball hitter to have six in a single season since the division era began in 1969. ... Since the start of 2005, he's come up 13 times with the chance for a game-ending plate appearance and made an out only once (and he ended up winning that game in the 12th inning). ... He has the most walk-off hits in any four-year span (12, and that doesn't include the three in the 2004 playoffs, which made him the only player in history with three game-ending postseason hits). ... Since he joined the Red Sox in 2003, he has 15 walk-off hits and the rest of the team has 19 total. ... Since Aug. 1, 2004, Ortiz has hit 21 home runs in 138 at-bats in Late-Inning Pressure Situations (no other player has more than 13). ... Dusty Baker has the most career walk-off hits (25, including the playoffs), but Ortiz is 10 behind. And just for the record, none of those stats include all the times when he tied a game or gave the Red Sox the lead in the seventh or eighth inning.

wow, that's quite a stat. Of course, leave it to Bill Simmons to be the one to report that statistic. Not that there's anything wrong with a heavily biased sports writer reporting something about a player on his favorite team. We still love him.

Great to see the Sox win, of course. But what's up with Timlin's recent slump? Five runs in his last four game appearances... and that's even after Francona learned not to put him into the game with inherited runners on.

Bottom of the ninth, down by a run. When David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez both proceed to make outs, you know you've already lost the game

just got back, checked the scoreboard and noticed:
...Curt Schilling picks up his 14th win ...Papelbon now has 30 saves, two more strikeouts, and another scoreless inning ...Big Papi jets two more out of the park, giving him 39 homers for the year and we're only entering the first weekend of August.
