Well I've been sucked into the game. Got it today and after work been running around for about 5 hrs. There's a new box set with CoH and CoV on itI started on the Triumph server, should have looked in here to see where people were at. I'm a L4 magic blaster named E-Charge.
Enhancements I'm not figuring out and I'm sure I'll have screwed myself at some point with what I've done with them down the road. Not sure what to buy or sell or put where.

Switch over to the Freedom server while you're still a whippersnapper and you can roll with me and Splattercat.

I'll read the Enhancement things again but so far I'm sure I've screwed things up with where I put them. Now I have 10 and can't place any of them anywhere.
How do you add friends. BDS was on when I was. Probably tonight maybe 10 or so on the east I'll be back online.

BDS' Global name is BDS so type " /gfriend @bds " My Global name is Splattercat, so type /gfriend Splattercat to send a global invite to me and I'll accept... Enhancements are by no means permanent by the way, you can't take them out, but you can place others over top...Like, if you have endurance reduction and you want damage, simply move a damage one over top of it and it will replace it... As for excess Enhancements, on either corner of the Atlas statue, nearby Ms. Liberty you'll see a couple girls called Trainers (represented by dollar signs on your map)....You can sell your bad enhancements to them...

It's the first online game I've gotten in. Played Warcraft at a friend's house for several hours once.
Been in CoH for way too long after two days. Got in a team and went through the sewars. That was cool but the screen was so full of powers going off there were times I couldn't even tell where the villain was or who I had targeted. My magic blaster went up 3 levels after doing that so he is L7. My tank Mr. House is at L4.

I remember playing COH back in the day when it came out and getting my blaster, Epoch, up into the mid 30s. Can't remember the exact server, but it started with a V.
The game was fun but just didn't have the lasting factor, just not much to do other than kill things. No economy, no trade skills just generic dungeon crawling. Have they addressed that?

The game was fun but just didn't have the lasting factor, just not much to do other than kill things. No economy, no trade skills just generic dungeon crawling. Have they addressed that? That would be Victory...The game has grown a lot since then, but they haven't gotten into economy...Unless of course you count "get a few Super-Enhancements and trade them to someone who can Power level you to 50 inside of 2 weeks", but that's caused some game changes in itself because it devalued the game as well... Personally, I think City of Heroes should be a simple game...They are adding stuff to make your character more diverse and powerful past level 50, and there is supposedly a skills system in the works which will add even more diversity...Which is more what the game is about in my opinion...And besides, Superheroing isn't really about Economy...it's about righting wrongs and triumphing over evil... From my point of view, it fits my play style nicely...Just simple level-based fun...I played CoH and then went for something that I thought should have been similar in Star Wars Galaxies, but what I got was something so bogged down in economy that it wasn't even Star Wars anymore... City of Heroes is what it is...I can totally understand and respect why you stopped playing...I have a friend who loves the idea and loves hearing about it, and loves superheroes, but will never play it, because it's not his type of game...He's big into Final Fantasy XI because of the economics of getting materials and making items and getting rich... It's all personal preferance, and it's all good...

i think CoH/V does what it does in an awesome way....I love the game. And the game is much more complex and has so much more depth than what first appears when you start playing. The way the enhancements work has incredible depth.
I am not really "into" super heroes, though...and that is probably why I lose interests after a couple weeks or so.
To me, though....Everquest 2 is the game that I really find intriguing. From the crafting, to the questing, to the monsters I fight, to the weapons, armor, and magic....and the setting.
Star Wars Galaxies was a game that had GREAT potential....but LucasArts wanted it more "arcady"...which meant really dumbing the game down, making it now, into more a FPS without the mechanics that a FPS has. Galaxies is a game that is very slowly dying a death. I blame LucasArts, though, because nearly every game that they try to control turns out so awful, it is nearly unplayable. Galaxies was a good game, and could have been a GREAT game...if LucasArts would have let SOE do what needed to be done. I do know that SOE used the nerf bat in some very rediculous ways (to the point where a baker would be able to kill a master bounty hunter), but again, that was probably also part of LucasArts prodding. If SOE would have been able to do what needed to be done, the game probably could have turned out at the very least, decent. EQ2, SOE's "pride & joy" has been opened up to the point, where the content is great, and they keep adding more and more (Echoes of Faydwer is adding a new race, the Fae, along with a new continent for levels 1-70).
Back to the topic, though....City of Heroes/Villains is a great game....good fun. But, there really is no diversion from the basics...fighting, fighting, and more fighting. That really is the "killer" for me. Log in to do the same exact thing I did yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. EQ2 lets me do so many different things, that I can log in just to harvest looking for rare materials....or craft and level my crafting level....or go out into the wilderness and hunt, or quest, or work on writs, or....see what I mean?

I log in and play around with the character editor and just make random new characters. That's a big chunk of the fun in the game for me. In-game, I started my own one-man supergroup, so I have a lot of fun decorating my fortress of solitude, too. My main character files, so I also like to just fly around and explore. So yeah, I get a little more out of it than just the fighting.
Crafting was one of my favorite parts of EQ2, but I just didn't have that much fun with the game proper and I couldn't bring myself to craft all of the time. I'd love to see them add crafting into CoH - take salvage and cobble it together into temporary items like freeze rays and magical charms and stuff like that. I can live without it, though, because I have so much fun playing the actual game.

They are looking at some sort of mechanic like that...I'll look around for info on it... EDIT: Well hell, that didn't take long.. From Matt Miller (Positron, current in command guy) "I’d like to start out by mentioning Issue 8: To Protect and Serve. This is a hero-centric Issue that finally levels the playing field between Heroes and Villains. We have a ton of stuff being added with this issue that will please a variety of players. It begins the multi-year storyline that continues next year with Issue 9 (title to be announced). I9 brings with it a huge new gameplay system: Inventions. Players will be able to craft Enhancements and Costume pieces for their characters using recipes, and salvage that they find while adventuring.
Issue 9 will also have Statesman’s Task Force, the Hero equivalent to the Recluse Strike Force. Both of these mission chains are designed for eight max-level characters and have some of the best rewards in the game.
Issue 10 is a ways out, but it will bring us an update to an old familiar villain group. This group will have their power center altered and bring about massive changes to the game as a whole. Heroes and Villains will find themselves banding together against a common threat." Bear in mind of course, that these are just some features of the upcoming issues...Each issue is a game-changing update...Must go for now, more later...

This will be awesome...Since salvage was introduced in Issue 5, I haven't used ANY of mine...can't wait...
Also can't wait for this, End game content has been somewhat lacking...There's a lot to do, but nothing that really screams "I'm level 50, anything you can do I can do better"... "Issue 10 is a ways out, but it will bring us an update to an old familiar villain group. This group will have their power center altered and bring about massive changes to the game as a whole. Heroes and Villains will find themselves banding together against a common threat." This is awesome...We got a taste of Hero/Villain team-ups ocne already, and it was great fun... As I mentioned before, announcements like this sound amazing, but they're literally only the tip of the iceberg...Every issue is something to look forward to...They also like to include "hidden" things like universal costume pieces, badges, emotes and the like...Little bonuses that aren't announced...

So who is able to play the new I8? Three days and I still haven't gotten it downloaded yet. Got multiple help requests sent in, first couple were responded too fast, now I guess I'm waiting the full business day.
It says downloading file manifest and then the download speed starts at less than 1 kb/sec on the pigg files. So basically if something doesn't start working or is fixed I'll never play again since it will take several hundred thousand hours to download.
Any ideas? It can't be that slow just because a lot of people are downloading now, can it? I see on the boards people are playing but the new game has tons and tons of bugs and errors people are trying to fight through.

Just got this response:
Unfortunately the automatic updater is the only method we have to distribute the most recent version of the game. My best advice would be to temporarily take your computer to another location and use a high speed connection to download the patch. Alternatively, you could have a friend with high speed install and update the game. You could then burn CDs of the game files and copy them to your computer. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
There is an internet cafe downtown I could see if I can take my laptop in and use their connection to try and download it. I'm not totally convinced this is the best answer. I am on dialup but did have a decent enough speed going that the first night I let it go overnight and it was done in 10 or so hours. Then another update started and this is when my problems began.
