Rookie referee Bob Warren noticed the foreign object and called for the bell. Johnny Valiant got a quick win over Ox Baker when he nailed two spinning neckbreakers about a minute into the match. Rose was able to drop Virgil with his Bombs Away, but Virgil made a good showing for himself. DiBiase took walked out on the match with Hawk rather than stay in and get pummeled. Red pinned the current #1 contender, Harley Race, with his Atomic Drop in a **** tag match. Animal surprised wrestling analysts and Dick Hutton with his victory, further intensifying the Road Warriors vs. Hutton & Frank A. Gotch feud. The main event was a ****1/2 slugfest, ending when Greg pinned the Sheik following a flurry of chops and a hard elbow drop. Greg, Shiek & Volkoff were all bloody messes at the end of this one!

AWA CARD #18 7/30/2006 Hammond Civic Center, Hammond, IN
1. Dick Hutton b. Nikita Breznikov ** 2. Ox Baker & Killer Kowalski b. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant *** ¾ 3. Gorgeous George b. Iron Sheik *** ¾ 4. Hawk b. Nikolai Volkoff *** ½ 5. Bobo Brazil b. the Sandman ** ¾ 6. Giant Baba & the Destroyer b. Ted DiBiase & Virgil ** ½ 7. Frank A. Gotch b. Animal ** 8. AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Red Bastien b. Harley Race * ¾
Summary: Ox Baker pinned Johnny Valiant in a great match. It was a long, brutal match that saw Kowalski & Johnny both get busted open. Gorgeous George and the Iron Sheik has a surprisingly scientific battle. George grabbed the victory when he locked on his spinning toe hold. Hawk and Volkoff pounded on each other, with Hawk getting a submission victory with his a backbreaker. Brazil hammered the Sandman with a series of Coco Butts for the pinfall. The tag team match served as a preview to the Americas Title match between Baba and DiBiase on the next show in Omaha. DiBiase never tagged in the ring when Baba was in, using Virgil to run interference instead. Baba pinned Virgil with a big Russian leg sweep. Gotch used his Gotch Toehold to grab a quick submission win over Animal. Bastien continued his unbelievable title reign, again using his atomic drop to level Race for the win.

AWA CARD #19 8/13/2006 Omaha Civic Center, Omaha, NE
1. The Destroyer b. Virgil ** 2. King Kong Bundy b. Gorgeous George ** ½ 3. Johnny Valentine b. Ox Baker * 4. Dick Hutton & Frank A. Gotch b. Johnny & Jimmy Valiant *** ¼ 5. The Sandman b. Killer Kowalski *** ½ 6. Playboy Buddy Rose b. Greg Valentine *** 7. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Giant Baba b. Ted DiBiase **** ¼ 8. STEEL CAGE/HANDICAP MATCH – Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, & Nikita Breznikov b. Animal & Hawk ***
Summary: The Destroyer displayed a very aggressive side in the opener, pummeling Virgil and grabbing the submission with his figure four leglock. King Kong Bundy stopped Gorgeous George’s winning streak. Frank A. Gotch took a beating from the Valiants, but Hutton tagged in and grabbed the win over Johnny with his abdominal stretch. In what has to be considered an upset, the Sandman got a pinfall over Killer Kowalski when Kowalski missed a big top rope kneedrop. Rose showed he ready for the tag title rematch on card #20 with a win over Greg Valentine. Rose surprisingly dominated Valentine, putting him away with a sleeper. Baba held off DiBiase’s strong challenge to keep the Americas Title. Lots of double teaming by the foreign trio allowed for the victory over the Road Warriors. Even more shocking was Breznikov covering Animal for the winning pinfall following his Russian Hammer!

AWA CARD #20 8/27/2006 North Iowa Ice Arena, Mason City, IA
1. Nikolai Volkoff b. Jimmy Valiant – DQ *** 2. Gorgeous George b. Harley Race *** ¼ 3. Ox Baker & Killer Kowalski b. the Sandman & Virgil ** ½ 4. Johnny Valiant b. King Kong Bundy * ½ 5. NON TITLE MATCH – Iron Sheik b. Giant Baba *** 6. Dick Hutton & Frank A. Gotch b. Red Bastien & Bobo Brazil **** ½ 7. Ted DiBiase b. the Destroyer ** 8. AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – NO DQ, NO TIME LIMIT – Johnny & Greg Valentine b. Jimmy Snuka & Playboy Buddy Rose ** ½
Summary: Jimmy Valiant used his chain throughout the match before being caught by rookie referee Bob Warren. Warren called for the DQ despite the protests of the “Handsome One.” George got back on his winning ways with a impressive win over Harley Race. The Sandman and Ox Baker will be squaring off in Minneapolis on the next show in a Texas Death Match, so tonight’s tag match served as a prelude. So that means they never got in the ring with each other! Kowalski instead finished off Virgil with his Klaw Hold. Johnny Valiant looked impressive with his singles win over Bundy. In the non-title match, Iron Sheik outwrestled Giant Baba and got the submission with a Boston Crab. The Sheik has looked impressive of late, using his wrestling skill and not Nikita’s interference to win his matches. Bobo Brazil his earned a title shot against Red Bastien and will receive it at card #21. Perhaps that led to some dissension in their tag match against Gotch & Hutton. Bastien was pinned by Gotch following an Iowa Backdrop. DiBiase made short of the Destroyer, and will receive a rematch against Giant Baba in the upcoming weeks. Snuka and Rose tried a lot of shortcuts, but they weren’t able to put away the Valentines. Johnny dropped his Atomic Skullcrusher on Snuka for the victory.

An AWA triple play! As always, Red Bastien = $$$ Ref Bob Warren has obviously not read the handbook about what refs are not supposed to see.

AWA CARD #21 9/10/2006 Minneapolis Auditorium, Minneapolis, MN
1. Jimmy Snuka b. Richard Hutton *** 2. Nick Bockwinkel b. Gorgeous George *** ½ 3. Iron Sheik b. Animal * ½ 4. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant b. Nikolai Volkoff & Nikita Breznikov *** ½ 5. Frank A. Gotch b. Hawk **** ¼ 6. TEXAS DEATH MATCH – The Sandman b. Ox Baker DUD 7. Ted DiBiase & Virgil b. Giant Baba & the Destroyer **** ¼ 8. AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Bobo Brazil b. Red Bastien to win title. ** ½
Summary: Snuka got back in the singles picture with a win over Hutton. Bockwinkel got revenge on one of the wrestlers who injured him. He put George to sleep and refused to wake him up after the bell. He later issued a challenge for a hair vs. hair match against George, vowing to “shave George bald!” The Sheik jumped Animal at the bell with his loaded boot, and the Road Warrior never had a chance. He locked in the Camel Clutch for the submission victory. The tag match was competitive when Nikita wasn’t in there. When he was, he turned into the Valiants’ punching bag. Jimmy brought out his ever present chain and slugged Volkoff with it for the pin. Gotch and Hawk had a wild match. The typically reserved Gotch went outside of the ring, dropped Hawk’s leg over the guardrail, and clamped the Gotch Toehold on back in the ring for the victory. Baker charged the Sandman at the bell, but one whack with the cane and it was over. A disappointing end to the match. DiBiase was the only man not to bleed in the semifinal match. The Destroyer & Virgil in particular took a beating, each racking up 6 PAs! DiBiase locked the Million Dollar Dream on the Destroyer in the middle of the ring, and held him in it for four minutes before the Destroyer finally passed out. Red Bastien’s five month and one day title reign came to an end at the hands of his best friend, Bobo Brazil. Brazil survived an atomic drop early in the match and was able to Coco Butt his way to victory. Bastien looked despondent after the match, but shook Bobo’s hand before exiting the ring.

AWA CARD #22 9/24/2006 Mayo Civic Center, Rochester, MN
1. Jimmy Valiant b. Jim Brunzell * ½ 2. Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane b. Nikolai Volkoff & Nikita Breznikov ** 3. Gorgeous George b. Frank A. Gotch *** 4. Killer Kowalski b. Johnny Valentine *** ½ 5. Playboy Buddy Rose & Jimmy Snuka b. the Sandman & Virgil - DQ ** ¾ 6. The Destroyer b. Red Bastien – COR *** ¾ 7. Iron Sheik b. Dick Hutton * 8. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Ted DiBiase b. Giant Baba to win title. **
Summary: Jim Brunzell’s return to the AWA was spoiled by Jimmy Valiant and his ever present chain! Jim Cornette and his Midnight Express made an impressive debut, making a quick work of the Russian duo. George must be taking Nick Bockwinkel’s challenge seriously, as he stuck to the wrestling basics and upset Frank A. Gotch. Killer Kowalski scored an impressive victory over the always tough Johnny Valentine. After tagging up on card #20 with Virgil, the Sandman is now officially an employee of Ted DiBiase. This makes the big feud between the heel groups (Bock/DiBiase/Virgil/Sandman) and (Rogers/Snuka/Rose/George) even. The fans are torn, as Snuka & Rose get some cheers, Bock has been injured by the Rogers group, and everyone hates Rogers and George! In first outing as an official team, they were DQ’d when Sandman started bashing Rose with his Singapore Cane. Two friends met up as Bastien and the Destroyer had a great match. Red must have been frustrated by his AWA title loss, as he appeared more aggressive than usual in the match. After the Destroyer clamped on the figure four leglock, Red rolled to the floor and took the countout loss, unable to get back up on his feet. The Iron Sheik got a quick victory in a bout between World Title contenders. Hutton charged at the Sheik in the corner, but Sheik scooped the legs and put his feet on the ropes for the pinfall. DiBiase was able to claim his first AWA championship in the Americas Title rematch. Baba whipped DiBiase into the ropes, but Virgil held onto DiBiase’s arms, so Baba airballed a dropkick and struck his head. DiBiase jumped on with the Million Dollar Dream and Baba’s arm dropped three times for the title change.

AWA CARD #23 10/8/2006 Showboat Sports Pavilion, Las Vegas, NV
1. Bob Orton, Jr. b. Ox Baker *** 2. Harley Race b. Koko Ware * ½ 3. Nick Bockwinkel b. King Kong Bundy * 4. Dick Hutton & Frank A. Gotch b. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant DUD 5. Playboy Buddy Rose b. the Sandman – DQ * ½ 6. Iron Sheik b. Killer Kowalski – COR *** ¾ 7. Greg Valentine b. Jimmy Snuka *** 8. Animal & Hawk b. Red Bastien & Bobo Brazil ** ½
Summary: Bob Orton, Jr. made a successful debut, dropping Ox Baker with his superplex. It was an impressive display of strength to see Orton haul Baker up to the top rope to deliver the finisher. Koko Ware wasn’t as lucky in his AWA debut, as he fell victim to Harley Race’s piledriver. Bockwinkel took out the giant Bundy with his sleeper. The Valiants attempted to ambush Hutton and Gotch before the bell, but Gotch grabbed Johnny in an Iowa Backdrop and KO’d him. He was easy pickings for the Gotch Toehold. Once again, the Sandman got carried away and belted Playboy Buddy Rose with his Singapore Cane. He smacked him a few more times after the bell before referee Larry Lisowski restored order. The Iron Sheik became the #1 contender to the World Title with a victory over Killer Kowalski. It was a back and forth battle before the Sheik loaded his boot and blasted Kowalski in the head. Kowalski tumbled to the floor and couldn’t answer the 10 count. Greg Valentine and Jimmy Snuka blasted each other with hard chops. Valentine was able to chop Snuka down, enabling him to clamp on the figure four leglock for the submission victory. The Road Warriors put Bastien down with the Doomsday Device in the main event. After the match, Brazil tried to assist Bastien, but Red refused his help and walked away.

AWA CARD #24 10/22/2006 Delta Center, Salt Lake City, UT
1. Playboy Buddy Rose b. Bobby Eaton * ½ 2. Koko Ware b. Virgil ** 3. Stan Lane b. Jim Brunzell ** ½ 4. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant b. Ox Baker & Killer Kowalski *** 5. Johnny Valentine b. the Sandman ** ¾ 6. Giant Baba & Mil Mascaras b. Harley Race & Bob Orton, Jr. *** 7. Bobo Brazil & the Destroyer DDQ Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff * 8. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Ted DiBiase b. Gorgeous George ** ½
Summary: The Playboy jumped Eaton before the bell, earning him a few boos. Perhaps his association with Buddy Rogers has taught him some more dirty tricks. Ware was able to put on an aerial display and get the victory. Jim Cornette’s distraction led to Lane’s victory. Brunzell has promised to get revenge on Thanksgiving when his tag partner arrives. The Valiants have continued to look sharp in recent weeks, dropping Baker & Kowalski with their top rope elbow finisher. Is another shot at the tag titles in their future? Johnny Valentine and the Sandman engaged in a slugfest, with Valentine using his atomic skullcrusher for the win.
Mil Mascaras made his AWA debut, teaming with All Japan associate Giant Baba. This upset Baba’s regular partner, the Destroyer, who has a storied rivalry with Mascaras in All Japan Pro Wrestling. Despite the controversy, the pair were successful against Race & Orton, Jr.
The semifinal had a wild ending, which added to the hard feelings between Brazil and Red Bastien. Instead of choosing Bastien as his partner, Brazil selected the Destroyer in this preview to the Brazil/Sheik World Title match on Thanksgiving. Brazil grabbed the Iron Sheik in a bearhug, leading Nikita Breznikov to jump up on the apron. Bastien ran out from the dressing room, and started shoving Breznikov. This brawl tumbled into the ring, so referee Gary DeRusha had no choice but to disqualify both teams. Brazil was upset with Bastien for getting involved in such an important match, but Bastien felt like he was protecting his friend from Breznikov’s interference.
Gorgeous George may have been on a winning streak recently, but he didn’t look very impressive against Ted DiBiase. DiBiase bounced him around the ring, putting 6 PAs on him while George couldn’t do a thing to the Americas Champion. DiBiase slipped on his Million Dream for the submission victory. Nick Bockwinkel ran down to the ring with scissors (obviously his mother never told him this was a bad idea!) but George rolled out of the ring and Buddy Rose was able to help him back to the dressing room before any of George’s hair could get clipped.

What's been going on with "Mr. Excitement" Red Bastien? He seems to be in a slump. No one knows for sure what's happened to this former AWA champion.
