9/2/07
LaCrosse Center, LaCrosse, WI
1. Jim Brunzell b. Butcher Vachon **
2. Buddy Rose & Larry Sharpe b. SD Jones & ST Jones *
3. Ivan Koloff b. Hacksaw Duggan **
4. Mad Dog Vachon & Larry Hennig b. Bob Orton Sr. & Bob Orton, Jr. – DQ ****
5. Ox Baker b. Harley Race – COR * ½
6. Jimmy Valiant & Dr. Tom Prichard b. Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane – DQ **** ¼
7. Ted DiBiase b. Komrade Red ***
8. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Giant Baba b. Don Leo Jonathan
Summary: Jim Brunzell showed some singles prowess, defeating Butcher Vachon with a beautiful sunset flip. The Riviera Playboys dominated the Jones Boyz, never letting ST Jones get in the ring. While Sherri Martel distracted the referee and ST, the Playboys hit a double clothesline on SD for the pinfall. Ivan Koloff jumped Hacksaw Duggan at the bell and never relented. He used four consecutive falling face slams on Duggan to get the victory. (It must be the “IK” initials!)
The Ortons and Hennig & Mad Dog match turned into a wild affair. Mad Dog was busted open early, thanks to some out of the ring brawling, and a pair of piledrivers from Orton, Sr. Hennig came in to work the body of the match, and held up well against the Ortons. Mad Dog tagged back in to finish off Orton, Jr., but Cowboy Bob turned the tide. Butcher Vachon ran out to break up a pin attempt on his brother, allowing Mad Dog to hit a piledriver on Orton Jr. He then nailed a double foot stomp and went for the cover on Orton Jr. This brought out Harley Race from dressing room, who came off the top rope with a diving head butt right in front of referee Bob Warren. Warren immediately called for the DQ on the Ortons. Mad Dog appeared shaken after the match, and needed his teammates to help him back to the dressing room.
The Vachons got their revenge on Harley Race in the next match. Race squared off against the always tough Ox Baker, who had not been seen in the AWA since late May. Baker had taken some time off to tour the southeastern region of the country. At first, it appeared that Race would have his way with Baker, as he threw him around with his suplex assortment. Baker snuck in a devastating clothesline, and clobbered Race with his feared heart punch. Race kicked out of the move, but Baker tossed him out of the ring. As Baker and referee Gary DeRusha argued about the tactics, Mad Dog Vachon (sporting a large bandage on his head) ran down to ringside and gave Race a piledriver on the concrete! Vachon snuck back to the dressing room, and DeRusha administered the 10 count, earning Baker the count out victory.
Jimmy Valiant has been seeing revenge against the Midnight Express since June, when Eaton & Lane injured Johnny Valiant. In tonight’s bout, he teamed up with Dr. Tom Prichard, a regional star, making his AWA debut. The two teams exchanged moves to open the bout, with no team having a definite advantage. Valiant and Prichard later absolutely destroyed Bobby Eaton, using Valiant’s chain and Prichard’s loaded boot to bust Eaton open. Valiant slammed Eaton with his Super Elbow, but Cornette popped him with his tennis racquet for the DQ.
Ted DiBiase squared off against the hated “Russian”, Komrade Red. Both competitors are looking to make their mark in the AWA singles rankings, and this bout would be an important step in the right direction. Komrade started off fast, grabbing DiBiase in a cradle while his back was turned. DiBiase kicked out, even with Komrade’s feet on the ropes for leverage. Komrade climbed to the top rope and came off with a flying clothesline, but DiBiase caught Red with a quick right to the jaw. DiBiase took over and was able to control the match, aside from some forearm shots from Red. DiBiase floored Red with his loaded glove, and trapped Red in the figure four for over a minute. Red made the ropes, but then DiBiase blasted him with another loaded glove shot for the win. Will DiBiase make noise for an Americas title shot, or does he have his eyes on the World title, currently held by his partner Nick Bockwinkel?
Don Leo Jonathan went up against the hated Americas Champion, Giant Baba. The fans were solidly behind Jonathan in this one, as they wanted to see Baba and his manager, the Destroyer, go back to Japan in defeat. Jonathan came out like a house of fire, battering Baba with forearm shots and some amazing dropkicks. After an atomic drop, Jonathan put Baba up in the Mormon Swing, but Baba managed to kick out. Jonathan continued to control the majority of the match, but this changed when he went up to the top rope for a deathjump. The Destroyer shook the ropes, and Jonathan hit the mat hard. Baba pounced on Jonathan, and used a succession of piledrivers and ringside brawling to weaken him. After a ringpost smash, Baba tossed Jonathan back into the ring and leveled him with the neckbreaker drop to retain his title.
