AWA CARD #27 12/5/2006 AWA CARRIBEAN CLASH Card #2 - Bayamon Stadium, Bayamon, PR
1. Nikolai Volkoff & Komrade Red b. Virgil & the Sandman *** 2. Jim Brunzell b. Bobby Eaton *** ¾ 3. Mil Mascaras b. Bob Orton, Jr. *** ½ 4. BEST OF 3 SERIES – MATCH TWO – Jack Veneno b. Carlos Colon DUD 5. NON-TITLE MATCH – Iron Sheik b. Koko Ware * ½ 6. Buddy Rogers & Jimmy Snuka b. Nick Bockwinkel & Ted DiBiase ** ½
Summary: Komrade Red made his debut in the Nikita Breznikov stable on this show. He took a beating from the Sandman and Virgil, but the “Russians” showed good double teaming skills. Volkoff pinned Virgil cleaning following a running knee drop. Jim Brunzell finally got a victory over the Midnight Express, pinning Bobby Eaton in a great singles match. Brunzell used his amazing dropkick as Eaton came off the top rope, which stunned Eaton for the pinfall. Bob Orton, Jr., looked very impressive against Mil Mascaras. He was getting many pin attempts on Mascaras, when the luchador locked him in a bow and arrow out of nowhere. Orton had no choice but to submit, to the delight of the Puerto Rican crowd.
Veneno scored an unpopular victory over Colon quickly with a handful of tights. Veneno was pelted with trash as he returned to the dressing room. The World Heavyweight champion resorted to his loaded boot to pin Koko Ware. The main event saw Bockwinkel miss a deathjump on Rogers, landing on his previously injured knee. Rogers clamped on the figure four grapevine for the submission. Bockwinkel was favoring his knee after the match.

How else do you explain Colon losing in Puerto Rico!

Buddy Rogers, Playboy Buddy Rose & Jimmy Snuka b. Nick Bockwinkel, Ted DiBiase, & the Sandman – DQ ** ¾ 6. BEST OF 3 SERIES – MATCH THREE – Jack Veneno b. Carlos Colon to become the AWA Caribbean Champion. ***
Summary: Komrade Red attacked before the bell and leveled Virgil with his airplane spin/atomic drop finisher, which has been renamed the Komrade Krunch. The Midnight Express pounded on B. Brian Blair until the Killer Bees were able to make the masked switch. Brunzell was DQ’d when he stole a foreign object away from Jim Cornette and tried to load his mask to deliver a head butt. Race and Valentine had a solid match, ending with Race’s always tough piledriver.
Fans were excited going into the Sabu/Mascaras match, as it was the first meeting of the two aerial artists. Both men exchanged high flying moves before Mascaras pinned Sabu with his flying body press. The six man match was a wild exchange, with rules liberally being bent. When the Sandman brought in his Singapore cane, referee Larry Liswoski called for the bell. Jack Veneno beat Carlos Colon before his fellow Dominicans to be declared the first ever AWA Caribbean Champion. Veneno and Colon shook hands following the match, and vowed to beat the Sheik and Volkoff on the next day’s show. Fans were going crazy as he was presented the new title belt by promoter Wally Karbo.

AWA CARD #29 12/7/2006 AWA CARIBBEAN CLASH Card #4 - Estadio Cibao, Santiago, DR
1. Komrade Red b. Koko Ware ** 2. The Sandman DDQ Jimmy Snuka ½* 3. NON-TITLE MATCH – Giant Baba b. Killer Kowalski ** 4. Nick Bockwinkel b. Mil Mascaras *** 5. Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane b. Johnny & Greg Valentine – COR ** 6. Jack Veneno & Carlos Colon b. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff *** Summary: Komrade Red displayed a new aggressive streak with Koko Ware. He brutalized Ware inside and outside of the ring, and finished the match with the Komrade Krunch. The Sandman/Snuka match was a quick brawl, ending when the Sandman delivered a Singapore cane shot. The action spilled out on to the floor and both men shoved referee Bob Warren, earning them the double DQ call. Baba earned a title rematch against Kowalski with a decisive pinfall.
Nick Bockwinkel was able to ground Mil Mascaras and wear him down with mat wrestling. Mascaras was not able to leave his feet for his vaunted aerial attack due to Bock’s attack. Bockwinkel clamped on the figure four leglock and referee Bob Warren quickly called for the bell. The Midnight Express earned the countout victory with some help from Jim Cornette. As Greg Valentine had Stan Lane in a hammerlock near the ropes, Cornette tossed white powder in Valentine’s face. Greg tumbled to the floor and was unable to answer Larry Lisowski’s count. Jack Veneno and Carlos Colon teamed up to defeat the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff. The Sheik assaulted Veneno early in the match, attempting to injure him prior to their World Title match on 12/8. Veneno made a comeback, and flattened Volkoff with his top rope stomp.

AWA CARD #30 12/8/2006 AWA CARIBBEAN CLASH Card #5 - Palacio Deportes, Santo Domingo, DR
1. Nikolai Volkoff & Komrade Red b. Jim Brunzell & B. Brian Blair ** ¾ 2. Jimmy Snuka b. Ox Baker ** 3. Nick Bockwinkel & Ted DiBiase b. Buddy Rogers & Playboy Buddy Rose ** 4. Giant Baba & Mil Mascaras b. Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane * 5. Sabu b. the Sandman ** 6. Animal & Hawk b. Dick Hutton & Frank A. Gotch – DQ *** ½ 7. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Killer Kowalski b. Carlos Colon *** ¾ 8. AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Iron Sheik b. Jack Veneno ****
Summary: The Russians were able to down the Bees, ending when Volkoff used his backbreaker drop on Brunzell. Snuka leveled Ox Baker with his Superfly Leap for the victory. DiBiase and Bockwinkel were anxious to get their hands on Buddy Rogers. They started inflicting a pounding on him, so he bailed from the ring. Rogers and Rose walked back to the dressing room, to the jeers and catcalls of the Dominican crowd. Baba and Mascaras showed continued success against the AWA’s heel teams, when Baba used his Baba chop on Stan Lane for the win.
Sabu dominated the first meeting between the wild brawlers. He busted the Sandman open and got the submission with his Camel Clutch. Hutton and Gotch brutalized the Road Warriors in their match up. The Warriors tried to turn the tide by taking the match to the floor, but Frank A. Gotch was DQ’d when he refused to break the Gotch Toehold on Animal outside of the ring. Carlos Colon came very close to winning the Americas title from Killer Kowaski. He nearly got a submission with his figure four leglock, and almost got a pin with a beautiful deathjump. As Kowalski distracted referee Bob Warren, Ox Baker struck Colon from behind with his bullwhip. Kowalski clamped on his klaw hold and pinned Colon near the ropes. The referee missed Colon’s foot on the bottom rope, enraging the crowd. The Iron Sheik and Jack Veneno faced off for the World title. Veneno was able to put Sheik down twice for pin attempts, but the Shiek battled back with his deadly suplex attack. He blasted Veneno with his loaded boot, and then clamped on the Camel Clutch. Veneno struggled valiantly to reach the ropes, but passed out from the pain. When referee Larry Lisowski called for the bell, a riot erupted! As the Sheik and Nikita Breznikov attempted to leave the ring, fans pelted them with garbage, and would not let them back to the dressing room. Finally, armed security gathered around the foreign duo and the referee and escorted them back. It was a wild scene that was replayed many times on AWA All Star Wrestling during the month of December.

AWA CARD #31 12/25/2006 AWA CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR - International Amphitheater, Chicago, IL
1. Koko Ware b. Playboy Buddy Rose ** 2. Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon b. Chris Candido & Buff Bagwell ** ½ 3. Ox Baker b. Don Leo Jonathan DUD 4. SPECIAL ATTRACTION MATCH – WWWF HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Bruno Sammartino b. Superstar Billy Graham DUD 5. Giant Baba b. Bob Orton, Jr. ** ¼ 6. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant b. Jim Brunzell & B. Brian Blair *** ½ 7. Ted DiBiase b. Harley Race *** ¼ 8. AMERICAS CHAMPIONSHIP – Mil Mascaras b. Killer Kowalski to win title. ***** 9. Nikolai Volkoff & Komrade Red b. Bobo Brazil & the Destroyer *** ½ 10. AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane b. Johnny & Greg Valentine to win titles. *** ¼ 11. Buddy Rogers b. Nick Bockwinkel *** ½ 12. CHICAGO STREET FIGHT MATCH – Animal & Hawk b. Dick Hutton & Frank A. Gotch ** 13. AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP – Jimmy Snuka b. Iron Sheik to win title. ***
Summary: Koko Ware got a big win over Playboy Buddy Rose, flooring him with the Ghostbuster. The Vachons, the tag team champions of the neighboring Indiana based WWA, rolled into town to beat on the “pretty boy” team of Candido & Bagwell. Mad Dog Vachon took great delight in biting the face of Bagwell! Ox Baker spoiled Don Leo Jonathan’s AWA debut, flooring him with the heart punch. Bruno Sammartino destroyed Superstar Billy Graham, hoisting him in his backbreaker and getting a quick submission victory. Giant Baba wants another Americas title shot, and threw Orton, Jr., all over the ring to prove it.
The Valiants turned Jim Brunzell into a bloody mess. Brunzell made a comeback, but Johnny pulled down the top rope as Brunzell bounced off of them. “Jumping Jim” tumbled to the floor and smacked his head. Jimmy then hit the Super Elbow for the pinfall. Ted DiBiase got a big win over Harley Race. DiBiase has been slowly dropping his rulebreaking habits and wrestling a more scientific style. Mascaras and Kowalski put together an amazing match, definitely a late contender for 2006 Match of the Year! Mascaras ended the match with 6 PAs, while Kowalski had 8 on him! An incredible back and forth match saw Kowalski hit two Bombs Away kneedrops for the win. Komrade Red squared off against his former partners for the first time. This was a highly emotional match, but the Destroyer and Brazil did not hold back on Red, instead showing him “tough love” through the use of Coco Butts and piledrivers!
The Midnight Express ended the Valentines’ 24 card title reign, which is the longest in AWA history. They hammered Johnny at the outset of the match, and used the Rocket Launcher to pin Greg. An ecstatic Jim Cornette hugged the title belts and screamed “Merry Christmas Momma!” following the title victory. The Bockwinkel/Rogers match was an even affair, but the interference of Rogers’ henchman, Playboy Buddy Rose, made the difference. Bockwinkel had Rogers trapped in his version of the figure four leglock. Referee Gary DeRusha checked with Rogers to see if he submitted, allowing Rose to reach through the ropes and slug Bockwinkel with a foreign object. With Bockwinkel KO’d in the middle of the ring, Rogers clamped on his figure four grapevine, and DeRusha counted Bock’s shoulders down. After the match, Rose climbed to the top rope and delivered his Bombs Away to Bock’s leg while it was still trapped in the figure four. Bock had to be helped from the ring, adding more fuel to an already explosive situation.
The Road Warriors were not going to be denied in their hometown of Chicago. To ensure that, they reunited with their longtime manager, Precious Paul Ellering! They jumped Gotch & Hutton at the bell, with Animal dumping Hutton out of the ring. They worked over Gotch, and prevented Hutton from ever entering the ring. The massacre ended when they hit the Doomsday Device on Gotch.
Normally, anyone going against the Iron Sheik would get all of the fans support. Jimmy Snuka received a fair amount of boos during the main event, showing how much his association with Buddy Rogers has damaged his standing in the fans’ eyes. The Sheik didn’t receive any cheers, but the fans booed both men and were happy to see them both take a beating! Snuka managed to escape the Camel Clutch, and kicked out after being hit with the Sheik’s loaded boot. He made a comeback, with chops and a piledriver, and flattened the Sheik with a Superfly Splash to capture his first AWA title. He held the title aloft to a mixed reaction, but as Buddy Rogers came down to congratulate him, the crowd started booing even more and littering the ring with trash.

Chad,
Definitely a historic Christmas night in Chicago for your AWA fed with Snuka winning his first AWA World Heavyweight Championship and with the Midnight Express ending the long reign of the Valentines! In both my original LOW fed from about 3 years ago that I never posted results for and in my current LOW fed, I have had the Midnight Express wrestle the Valentines and for some reason those two tag teams regularly seem to wrestle a good match against each other as it looks like they just did for you too.
Also nice to see the Road Warriors get the victory in Chicago.

As I post my results for the coming months, you'll see that the Valentines and the MX will square off many more times in both singles and tags. Most of these matches have been great bouts. Even Jim Cornette will get in the ring for some of the action!

AWA CARD #32 1/1/2007 YJ Yourd Gymnasium, Clinton, IA
1. Jimmy Valiant b. Bob Orton, Jr. ** 2. Playboy Buddy Rose b. the Sandman ** ¼ 3. Johnny Valentine b. Johnny Valiant ** ½ 4. Bobo Brazil & the Destroyer b. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff *** ½ 5. Dick Hutton b. Koko Ware 6. Don Leo Jonathon b. Ox Baker DUD 7. Buddy Rogers & Jimmy Snuka b. Nick Bockwinkel & Ted DiBiase *** ½ 8. AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP – Bobby Eaton & Stan Lane b. Jim Brunzell & B. Brian Blair *** ¾
Summary: The AWA started 2007 in Clinton, IA, at the YJ Yourd Gymnasium (who is YJ Yourd?) with another exciting night of wrestling action! Jimmy Valiant had a little trouble with Bob Orton, Jr. in the opening bout. Brother Johnny V slipped Jimmy his infamous chain, which led directly to the pinfall. Playboy Buddy Rose his used Bombs Away to quickly pin the Sandman. Following the match, Nick Bockwinkel limped out to ringside and grabbed a chair. He repeatedly clobbered the unsuspecting Rose with it to the delight of fans! Rose had to be stretchered out of the ring. Johnny Valentine was able to outwrestle Johnny Valiant, pinning him with a rolling cradle. Bobo Brazil & the Destroyer combined to severly injure Nikolai Volkoff’s right leg during their tag match. They assaulted Volkoff throughout the match, bloodying him after a series of Coco Butts. After they disposed of Sheik and Breznikov outside of the ring, Brazil held Volkoff’s outstretched leg while the Destroyer came off with the Bombs Away on the leg. Brazil & the Destroyer got the pinfall, while Volkoff writhed in pain on the mat. This was a more severe version of the attack that Rose & Rogers used on Bockwinkel on Christmas Day.
Dick Hutton had trouble catching up with Koko Ware, but once he had him on the mat, it was all over. Hutton used his abdominal stretch for the submission win. Don Leo Jonathon evened the score against Ox Baker, getting a quick pin with a small package. Bockwinkel and Ted DiBiase were laying into Jimmy Snuka, when Playboy Buddy Rose (with a large bandage wrapped around his head!) snuck down to ringside. As DiBiase hit the ropes to deliver his flying lariat, Rose grabbed his leg and tripped him. Rogers then tagged in and pinned DiBiase while using the ropes for leverage. Snuka did not look pleased as Rogers and Rose celebrated. The Midnight Express made their first defense of the AWA World tag titles. They had a close match with the Killer Bees, but as usual, Jim Cornette’s “managerial skills” made the difference. Cornette’s racket made its way into the ring and was bashed over Jim Brunzell’s head for the pinfall.
