DETROIT - BIG TIME WRESTLING

I chose this fed to run because it was the first wrestling I was ever exposed to way back in the seventies and it put it my blood that has lasted until today.
Bobo Brazil and Flying Fred Curry where my childhood heroes and I was terrified of the Sheik and his fire throwing ways. Plus the Cobo Arena is one of the greatest venues in the history of wrestling. It's truly hallowed ground in wrestling.
It's going to be hard to make a roster fitting of Motor City Wrestling because alot of the stars are not in Legends but I'll do my best to be true to this great organization.

The Flying Redheads teamwork and speed was the difference in this one. They kept the much bigger and more powerful Russians off balance the entire match and just simply out wrestled them. Billy hit Rapid Fire Drops Kicks on Nikolai and then tagged in Red who lifted the huge Russian up and hit an Atomic Drop for the pin. **
* After the match Koloff got in Volkoff's face yelling at him " How can you lose to American bums?!" Volkoff shoved Ivan down on his butt and left the ring. The camera zooms in on a seething Ivan Koloff's face.

THE MISSING LINK /w/ Slick squashed S.D. JONES** by pin
The wild man from parts unknown ran over Special Delivery like a run away truck and pinned him following a Back Flying Head Butt. DUD

ED ' THE STRANGLER ' LEWIS** beat LARRY ' THE AXE ' HENNIG***** by sub
Ed , who'd spent the better part of the day wondering the streets of Detroit begging for money and trying to sell autographed photos of himself , barely made into the arena for the start of his match. He started slow as The Axe attacked him like a mad bull but eventually took control and took the match to the mat negating Larry's power. After several attempts The Strangler finally locked on The Strangler Headlock tight in the center of the ring and Hennig had no choice but to submit. **1/4

ONE MAN GANG /w/ Slick crushed JIMMY VALIANT**** by pin
OMG was a Juggernaut in this one as he steamrolled the New York native and pinned Valiant easily after a 747 Splash. 1/2*

THE CRUSHER**** beat OX BAKER**** by pin
Not a very technically sound match as these two brawlers just pounded on one another until Crusher ( The man that made Milwaukee famous ) connected with a huge Crusher Bolo that knocked Ox out cold and allowed Crusher to get the pin. **1/2

CURT HENNIG **** beat BUDDY ROGERS ***** by pin
This was probably the best math of the night as these two great wrestlers put on a clinch . The action was very fast paced and momentum swung back and forth constantly. Rogers seemed in control late in the match but Hennig reversed a whip into the ropes and caught the Nature Boy coming off with a Perfect Hennig Plex for the 1.2..3... Rogers was stunned that Larry's punk kid was actually able to pin his shoulders to the mat for a three count and immediately demanded a rematch next week.

NWA WORLD TAG-TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
THE FABULOUS KANGAROOS : AL COSTELLO & ROY HEFFERNAN ( C ) /w/ ' Wild ' Red Berry beat BOBO BRAZIL***** & JOHNNY VALENTINE by pin
Bobo was no match for the double teaming tactics of the champs and every time he went to make a tag Valentine would either turn his back to talk to the fans or jump down from the ring apron and walk around acting like he was try to work out a cramp or something. After Bobo was caught with the Boomerang Johnny made no attempt to save his partner and Brazil was pinned by Costello. **
* The sold out Cobo Arena was out of control as they were throwing everything possible at Valentine as he made his way back to the dressing room after the match. The champions and their manager felt the wrath of the Detroit faithful also as they were dowsed with beer and pelted with garbage as they made their way to the back.

UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP vs. UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP
THE SHEIK***** ( C ) ( Detroit version ) and RAY STEVENS ***** ( C ) ( San Francisco version ) fought to a Double DQ
You could cut the excitement in the air with a knife it was so thick as the Cobo Arena was rocking so loud the people in Windsor could hear them with ease.It's obvious the ring will not contain this feud as these two fought everywhere. The ref let the action go on as long as he could but finally had no choice and had to call for the bell as the two champs fought all the way into the back. Cameras followed the action that went all the way to the parking Lott , where the Sheik used a Fireball that put the Crippler down on the pavement screaming in pain.

* Great promoting here fans as Detroit promoters have lured the NWA champion to the territory to defend his title. This has upset other promoters around the country who feel it was their turn to host the champ. The most vocal and outspoken being Bill Watts of Mid-South Championship Wrestling and he has gone on record saying his talent far exceeds that of Motor City Wrestling and has challenged MCW to an inter promotional show to prove it.

Lyons used his speed to keep Koloff off balance and scored a huge upset with a Rolling Reverse Cradle. **

JIMMY VALIANT *** & S.D. JONES beat THE MISSING LINK***** & ONE MAN GANG** /w/ Slick
Valiant and Jones worked well together and got a huge victory and a small amount of revenge for their singles losses when Valiant put The Link out with a Sleeper , while Jones ran interference against Gang & Slick. **1/4
* The Doctor Of Style was upset with his man Link and slapped him in the face after the match , while scolding the brute. Link became very irate and clotheslined Slick and then delivered a big boot to the face of Gang before running off to the back like a mad man.

' MR. EXCITEMENT ' RED BASTIEN* upset NIKOLAI VOLKOFF***** by pin
Mr Excitement lived up to his name in delivering a exceptional and dominating performance against a much larger and stronger Volkoff. Volkoff could mount no offense against the much smaller and faster Bastien , as Red wore down the massive Russian with drop kicks , Boston Crabs, abdominal stretches and finally scored the shocking win after an Atomic Drop. **

LARRY ' THE AXE ' HENNIG* beat OX BAKER*** by pin
Ox looking to make an example of Hennig got a rude awakening as The Axe refused to be any body's stepping stone. Larry dominated the action and never let up on Baker and pinned Ox after a hammering forearm off the ropes ( The Axe ). *1/2

THE CRUSHER beat ED ' THE STRANGLER ' LEWIS by forfeit
The Crusher wins when Lewis no shows the event. Reports say Ed was lying face down in the gutter drunk outside the Cobo Arena Although these rumors are unsubstantiated , there is clearly is a problem with the Strangler right now.

CURT HENNIG**** beat ' NATURE BOY ' BUDDY ROGERS***** by pin
Again Rogers beat Hennig from pillar to post only to be pinned in the end after a perfect Hennig Plex. To his credit Curt escaped the Figure Four Grapevine twice in the match. ***1/4

The fans went berserk when Bobo's partner was announced , the one the only Mil Mascaras but were quickly silenced as the Aussie duo dominated the challengers and quite frankly made it look easy in beating the two Icon fan favorites. Bobo again felt the wrath of the Boomerang and was pinned by Heffernan. **


NWA WORLD HWT. CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH
HARLEY RACE***** ( C ) lost to JOHNNY VALENTINE****** by pin/DQ
Controversy and turmoil was the end of this match . The ref was knocked out by Race on accident after a deathjump and during this time Harley had Valentine pinned several times . Johnny turned the tide after a chair shot on the outside , threw Race back in the ring and hit an Atomic Skullcrusher and got the three count from a new ref who had just ran down to the ring. Valentine was given the belt and announce as the new hwt. champion but the original ref regained his composer and said he was disqualifying Race for knocking him out. Therefor Race retains his title due the fact it can not change hands on a disqualification. Valentine refused to give back the belt and left the ring with it. ***1/2

This match was not for the faint of heart as both men were bleeding profusely. The Sheik used a screwdriver to bust Stevens open but Stevens returned the favor by slamming the Sheik's head into the cage over and over again. Stevens was obviously hampered by his injury suffered last week but fought against all odds and came close to winning several times but a missed turnbuckle leap was all the opening the crazy Syrian needed to apply the Camel Clutch in the center of the ring. Stevens never gave up but passed out from the pain giving the Sheik the submission victory and the undisputed United States Hwt. Championship. ****

Great show, Kevin! A Dusty finish in the Valentine-Race match--don't use that too much, it'll kill the territory. What's up with Strangler? Nice to see The Redheads get singles wins. (Sorry, couldn't resist!) Good to see Sheik unify the belts.

Big news : Big Time Wrestling from Detroit ( Motor City Wrestling , MCW ) has withdrawn from the NWA due the recent match between Race - Valentine for the NWA World title and also the actions of NWA President Bob Geigel. MCW has formed a partnership with the AWA ( American Wrestling Alliance ) out of San Francisco , Mid-South Wrestling in Louisiana and Maple Leaf Wrestling in Toronto to form the W.W.A.
The main headquarters will be in Detroit , Michigan and there will be one World Hwt. Champion & Tag-Team Champions that will tour the different territories and constant talent sharing will result as well. The United States Hwt. Title currently held by the Sheik will remain in the W.W.A. as MCW owns the rights to the championship and the NWA World Tag-Team Titles currently held by the Fabulous Kangaroos will be renamed the International Tag-Team Titles until the tournaments are over.
Tournaments have been set to crown the first W.W.A. WORLD HWT. CHAMPION and W.W.A. WORLD TAG-TEAM CHAMPIONS to begin at The Cobo Arena next card.

The air in Cobo Arena was electric , more so than usual , as wrestlers from around the country and Canada arrived at the arena for the launch of the brand new W.W.A. The fans were on the edge of their seats and most standing for the opening rounds of the WWA WORLD HWT. & TAG-TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP tournaments. There's twelve huge matches tonight so let's get to the action.


KILLER KOWALSKI* beat ( Canadian Hwt. Champion ) DINO BRAVO by DQ
The fan favorite Bravo lost his cool early and was disqualified for ramming Kowalski's head into the ring post repeatedly. DUD

THE DESTROYER*** beat ( American Hwt. Champion ) RAY STEVENS**** by pin
In a epic battle of the Bay area Icons it was the Destroyer coming out on top after a Bombs Away put The Crippler down for the three count. **3/4

JOHNNY VALENTINE**** beat MASKED SUPERSTAR***** by pin
In probably one of the best matches of the night Johnny Valentine pinned The Masked Superstar after wearing him down with a Sleeper followed by an Atomic Skullcrusher and finally a Leg-Drop off the top rope for the win. During the match Valentine managed to escape the Cobra Clutch twice and kicked out of a Swinging Neck breaker. ***1/4

( North American Hwt. Champion ) HACKSAW DUGGAN beat JAKE ROBERTS* by pin
The rule breaker Duggan went at The Snake like a run away freight train and made quick work of Jake. A Tough Guy Clothesline followed by Spinning Body slam and then a Piledriver was enough to score Hacksaw the win and move on. *

THE FLYING REDHEADS beat BRAD ARMSTRONG*** & BRIAN BLAIR****
In a very one side affair Bastien * & Lyons put on a wrestling clinch as they made quick work of the ' New ' Lightning Express when Mr. Excitement Bastien pinned Blair after an Atomic Drop. *1/4

IVAN KOLOFF*** & NIKOLAI VOLKOFF**** beat LARRY SHARPE** & BAM BAM BIGELOW**** by CO
Bigelow was taking it to the big Russian but once fatigue set in after receiving punishment of his own he was forced to tag in Sharpe who held his own for a minute but was hit by Koloffs' Chains on the outside and was counted out. **1/2

THE CRUSHER* beat CURT HENNIG** by pin
The Man that made Milwaukee famous is the first to hand Hennig a loss since he arrived in Mo-Town and what a convincing loss it was. Hennig could mount very little offense against Crusher and was knocked out cold and pinned after a Crusher Bolo. * 1/2

BUDDY ROGERS beat OX BAKER*** by pin
The Nature Boy was like a relentless machine in this one and Ox never stood a chance. Baker refused to submit to the Figure Four Grapevine but after several minutes of excruciating pain his shoulders were counted down for the three count. *

THE FABULOUS KANGAROOS destroyed JIMMY VALIANT*** & S.D. JONES** by pin
The undefeated International Tag-Team Champions looked very impressive as they didn't even break a sweat . Costello pinned Jones after a Body Block catapult. **

OMG** & BUTCH REED****/w/ Slick upset The Mid-South Tag Champions TED DIBIASE***** & STEVE WILLIAMS*** by pin
In probably the biggest upset of the night One Man Gang pinned Dibiase after a Slick cane shot followed by a 747 Splash. **3/4

' MAGNIFICENT ' DON MURACO***** shocked BOBO BRAZIL*** and the sold out Cobo Arena by pin
Brazil came out like house of fire but Muraco took everything Bobo threw at him and just refused to be pinned. A Big Hammer Punch knocked Muraco out of the ring and to the arena floor. When Brazil went out to get him he was caught with an Asiatic Spike that sent him down. The Magnificent one rolled him back in the ring and hit a Hawaiian Hammer for the victory. The crowd was in stunned silence as Muraco , was announced the winner , and headed for the dressing room before the riots began. ***

THE SHEIK /w/ Abdullah Farouk crushed GEORGE SOUTH** by sub
South refused to be intimidated and went after the Sheik at the bell and even took the Syrian mad man down. But it didn't last long as the Sheik turned it around after stabbing South in the forehead with what appeared to be a pencil and then applied the Camel Clutch in the center of the ring , from which there is no escape and South gave it up. *1/4

PRO WRESTLING Illustrated and Bill Apter broke the story on why the W.W.A. was formed.

It turns out that the NWA was not going to grant Valentine a rematch even though it was Race who was disqualified. Also NWA President Bob Geigel had called a meeting about not letting the NWA World Hwt. Championship be defended in Detroit again ever. It is painfully obvious that the NWA only care about the Central States territory and a few others ( Florida , Carolinas ) . The rest must fight for scraps and those promoters were fed up with this kind of treatment and pulled out of the NWA.
