The Body Lock Theorytinyurl.com/3apros
LWPD (this is from Robert Drysdale's 9th Dimension Jiu-Jitsu series...more sport grappling based than MMA but still applicable)
I've played around with this position extensively, and I've never seen it anywhere else before now. I'll get into this position a lot by letting someone mount me. I'm 6'4" and abnormally flexible, so what I do is give myself some room and bring my legs up and in front of my opponent's chest, like an x guard. from here the opponent really has nothing, and it's easy to tilt them to one side. I really haven't had much success finishing anything. I'll go for ankle and foot locks, but rarely can I finish with what I call a reverse triangle lock. I'm going to have to try this body lock thing out if I ever get back to training regularly!

I'm going to have to try this body lock thing out if I ever get back to training regularly! Knapik With that type of height and flexibility you should consider looking into Rubber Guard techniques. My friend is an ex-B Ball player who's just started training at Renzo's in the city...at 6'7 RG has really helped his learning curve.
Rubber Guard Fundamentals & Submissions I remember in the early 90's it was considered bad form to ever cross your ankles (because of the ankle lock 'crush' counter)...and 'putting the hooks in' was considered better form than applying something like a body lock. It's a sign of the times that today there are practical exceptions to those rules. The openness of competition has brought grappling technique to an unheard of level in a very short amount of time. Watch one of the old Gracie Jiu Jitsu series instructionals and contrast what was once 'cutting edge' material with what most basic students of the game know today as just common knowledge. The learning curve is tremendous.

Embarrassing Mismatch: Ben Rothwell vs An Over-matched Youngstertinyurl.com/yoo8z2LWPD (shame on whoever promoted this show...that young man had no right to be in there and should have been vetted out from competing for his own safety...this type of footage can be immensely harmful to the image of the sport when placed in the hands of it's detractors)

The safest thing MMA can do if this becomes an issue again is to conpletely jar itself away from Vale Tudo and anything not sanctioned by a legit athletic commision. The UFC/American MMA Orgs can shave fighters records on their website and announce fighters how they want them to. They can point fingers at Rio Heroes and say "that is not what we are about!" I am starting to have problem with the lack of a "true discipline" or code. Hey, the Galaxian Wrestling Federation needed a code to put itself center stage as the galaxy's #1 sport. So does UFC/American MMA Orgs.

I am starting to have problem with the lack of a "true discipline" or code. Hey, the Galaxian Wrestling Federation needed a code to put itself center stage as the galaxy's #1 sport. So does UFC/American MMA Orgs. You're right about the 'apples and oranges' separation approach...but to the witch hunters...it's all one and the same. I could easily see footage like this being used on tabloid shows to indict 'the audience' as a whole when they do their periodic features on 'this growing blood sport'. Then throw in the 'recent death' of a competitor, an articulate well spoken guest who collaborates the negative effects the viewing of violence has on children/society in general/health risks to the naive mindless competitors' who are mere pawns to the vices of big money gamblers and greedy money movers and shakers ...which all nicely sets up the Big Brother 'for the greater good' tone thats ponders the question of 'does our society really NEED this type of entertainment?' It's a tough argument to win with the casual observer...and where they go...sponsorship money and network support follow. To those with such an agenda they have gold landing right into the palm of their hands...with the fault sadly being the very people putting on these smaller shows. UFC is 'already in'...the real losers are those trying to legit elevate themselves into the larger market on a sustainable level.
