This reminds me of one of those long spoken 'Carlson Gracie wasn't unbeatable' contentions from a pre-streaming video era mid 90's submissiongrappling.com thread. Gracie/Santana was the type of hard to find 'golden treasure' footage tape traders would kill for just seven to ten years ago...today younger fans can now find it easily and ubiquitously. It's amazing how times change. I've always wondered how much of the old televised Brazilian Vale Tudo footage has been preserved. Was it like pro wres where the footage was 'taped over' and largely lost forever? Or is there a 'golden archive' locked away somewhere in Sao Paulo or Brasilia with vintage VT footage galore like the full uncut Helio/Kimura fight and undercard, the full Rickson/Zulu undercard, local challenge matches, style vs style clashes, etc.? I mean it was a legit Brazilian sport with a long presence on television...there has to be more out there than what we've seen...doesn't there?

I highly recommend the book entitled "a season on the mat" great story about gable winding down his coaching career. the man has lived an interesting life. An excellent recommendation. Dan Gable's achievements are heroic and inspiring. Few could cope with his tragic family situation...and even fewer...with considerably more resources and advantages on their side...can even approach his output. There are great athletes in every sport...but it's rare to able to transmit that success through teaching. Dan Gable was able to excel at both with a level of style and class that have made him an enduring figure. Amateur Record: 182-1 1972 Gold Medal in Wrestling Coaching Record of 355-21-5 Winning Percentage: .938 15 National Titles in 21 Seasons Dan Gable vs Larry Owings 1970 NCAA Final (his one and only collegiate defeat)
A Season on the Mat by Nolan Zavoral In "A Season on the Mat," award-winning reporter Nolan Zavoral explores Iowa's storied wrestling program and Gable's record of excellence in an unprecedented, intimate look at the man and his methods.
A Season on the Mat chronicles this dramatic final season as coach of the University of Iowa, in which Gable led his team—far from his most talented—to the national title. Zavoral takes the reader behind the scenes, into the stifling heat of the wrestling room where young men from places like Rock Falls, Iowa, or Philip, South Dakota, sacrifice everything they have just to be a part of the Hawkeye program. We watch strong willed athletes like Mike Mena, whose struggle to make weight almost cost him a shot at the national championship; Lincoln McIlravy, who overcame persistent severe headaches to win his third national title in his four-year career; and all the other wrestlers who contributed to a record-breaking performance at the NCAAs, scoring the most points in collegiate wrestling history.
But most important, we see the man behind the Gable legend. From his difficult upbringing, interrupted by the tragedy of his sister's brutal murder, through the single defeat that haunts him to this day, to the ups and downs of his phenomenal coaching career, Gable has come to symbolize to many all that is special about this demanding, elemental sport. Part biography, part chronicle, part portrait of this unique subculture, A Season on the Mat is the best and most thorough look at one of the most important and most overlooked figures in American athletics.
