Well, at least I have that assurance that my universe won't consistently be thrown off of its axis. Thank you for that, Havoc.

Get ready to root, root, root for the Cubbies, Havoc ... Pignatiello is going to come in when we stop running up the score on the Reds this inning.

Agreed. I'm optimistic, because my boys remembered how to hit this weekend, and these last few years they've always brought their best game against the Cards. Should be fun.

My buddy thought it was cool to see his last name on the uniform, etc when he was warming up on Tuesday. Some people just have their last name on a B-Level porn magazine.

THE CUBS HAVE RESIGNED CARLOS ZAMBRANO!
Five years, 90 million. Expensive, yeah, but it's Big Z (who I wanted to trade earlier in the year - shut up, Havoc). Considering the kind of dollars teams like the Mets, Yankees, and others could have thrown his way in free agency, this could turn out to be a steal. I'm a happy Cubs fan today!

He's not a Sox fan, Aquinas. Get your facts straight. You're just angry that your boys have to face Big Z's wrath for another 5 years now. It'll be fun getting back up into first place with the Crew again today, too.

Not sure how I feel about that, that's a pretty hefty price for a pitcher that doesn't project all that well.
I knew the Cubs weren't going to get a Chris Young-type discount, but you've got a guy who's throwing a lot of pitches at a very young age. I don't have his groundball-to-flyball ratio in front of me but his walks are again going to be in the 100s, most likely, and the strikeouts have taken a slight turn for the worse.
He's going to be experiencing all of this in a very pitcher unfriendly environment. I'd love to give Zams the benefit of the doubt, but my gut tells me the Cubs are going to end up regretting this one in a few years.

I'm not off the band wagon. I'm just a realist.

Z's always thrown a lot of innings and a lot of pitches, though, and he's always responded well to it. If there's any pitcher in baseball I'd trust to hold up under hefty pitch counts, it's Carlos Zambrano.
The other thing I'd throw out there is that Zambrano is an extremely emotional pitcher, and his two bad stretches from earlier this year and his last two or three starts have come during times when he was (apparently) locked into contract negotiations. He's mentioned how much he hates that side of things, and I can see him letting that get to him and leading to his overall down performance this year. I would be shocked if Z isn't lights out from here on out now that the deal is done.
I know that nothing I've just said is grounded in statistical fact, and it's probably all tinted by my official Cubs fan blue sunglasses. But as someone who's followed all of Carlos Zambrano's major league career closely, shared some of your statistical concerns, and either watched or listened to most every game he's pitched the last few years, I'm happy with this deal.

The Cubs are back in first, and their magic number has gone down by two this morning. No matter what happens in today's game, we'll still be in first tomorrow. I need some humbling. So I bring you the 2004 Cubs highlight video, set to "One Thing" by Finger Eleven. I seriously cry every time I watch this thing - that season was in some ways more painful than 2003, becuase I expected them to do well.

I disagree! Next week's series is shaping up to be quite the important series, eh? I'm looking forward to watching my boys sweep the Crew and crush your feeble playoff dreams.
