With 2006 nearly in the books I thought I'd start a thread for people to list their favorite albums that came out this year. My list for the most part is strictly confined to hard rock/ metal. The list is in no particular order. Blood Mountain Mastadon : I love Mastadon. This album has been in heavy rotation since I picked it up. I think. Leviathan was a better album overall though. Smear Campaign Napalm Death : Grind...grind...grind! I once dated a girl who liked Napalm Death. Christ Illusion Slayer : it's Slayer. Nuff said.
The New Black Strapping Young Lad : My friends wonder why I like this band and sometimes I wonder why as well. 10,000 Days TOOL : Although I think this album soundssimilar to Lateralus, you can't beat Tool's musical ability. I've never been disappointed by a Tool album. Surprised maybe..but never disappointed. Demonica Behemoth : I've seen Behemoth live and when these guys come on stage in leather and spikes..you know they mean business. ;D Desperate Man's Diary Glass Casket : Tech Death Metal at it's finest. Dead Mountain Mouth Ghengis Tron : A cross between electronic music and grindcore. An interesting listen all the way. It's all a Long Goodbye On Broken Wings : Your run of the mill Moshcore with breakdowns thrown all over the place. Best listened to as loud as possible. No Heroes Converge : Some hate Bannon's vocals, some love them. Converge can't be classified into one specific genre and their musical ability is unmatched. Better then You Fail Me IMO. Saturday Night Wrist Deftones : Love the album title. Deftones for me have always been mood music. This effort works well enough..although not my favorite by them. Delenda From a Second Story Window : Nothing too special here, just your run of the mill spastic grindcore. The album is supposed to be based on a book from the bible and lyrically moves like a story. A fun listen. World War 1 Tower of Rome : Short and sweet..just the way I like my grind. Also features ridiuclous song titles..can't go wrong there. I could of listed many more...but that would be going over the top. One album I was severly disappointed by was Caliban's Undying Darkness. These guys used to be the German Metalcore kings, but in recent years have watered down their music so badly they sound like Killswitch Engage, which IMO is a bad thing. I hate the predictable screamed verse, sang chorus formula.

While I never picked up any new albums, it's hard to find good hard rock like this around here. Usually nothing harder than Disturbed or others on the radio...I'm hoping to pick up Sirius soon and check out the harder stuff they have to offer. Not sure how widely played they are, but the band is called Psychostick and the song is called "Beer." It's a catchy tune. They also have another one called "2 Ton Paperweight." Other than that, no a lot of harder stuff, but I still love my Slipknot Vol. 3 that I got last year for Christmas.

WRIF is alright...but they don't play any hard metal except for around the midnight hour (midnight metal). You might get some Slayer, Pantera or Black Dahlia Murder if you're lucky.

The music scene is pretty awful right now.
Though 2 albums I did like a lot that came out this year were:
10,000 Days by Tool and The Deftones Saturday Night Wrist.

Jay-Z's Kingdom Come and T.I.'s King were my two favorite albums that came out in 2006. I also liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium. Other than those three albums, I didn't get too many memorable albums this year.

I forgot about Johnny Cash's CD. That was good, too. I heard Wolfmother is supposed to be all right, but I haven't listened to them yet.

Blues and Boogie Shoes by the Keene Brothers (side project of Tommy Keene and former Guided by Voices frontman Bob Pollard). A power-pop masterpiece.
Song of the Year goes to Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down." Incidentally, this would be the greatest entrance music in the history of wrestling.

Evanescence - The Open Door....a great 2nd album by one of the most creative bands out there. Revelation Theory - Truth Is Currency...Opened for Evanescence at the show I went to. Great potential. Jenny Martin - Long To Be.....Softer then most else I listen to, but she's very good. I guess I'm kind of biased since she is a friend of mine, but I honestly like it A LOT. You can check her out here.... cdbaby.com/cd/jennymSeether - One Cold Night....I love this band. Seether - Karma & Effect....I think that came out this year, I can't remember for sure. But again, I love this band. Umm...I guess that's it.

The Death Match Kid - I have seen 'Napalam Death' many times live since 1980's when Extreme Noise Terror , Concrete Sox , Rancid (not USA band but a Bristol UK band) , Bolt Thrower , Dr and the Crippens etc where around . I have got many ND Lps including their first Lp 'Scum' . Napalm Death rule man .
Best music in 2006 - I love punk . I thought was 3CR (Manchester UK) Cd 'Just F****ing Do It' Cd .
'Anti-Nowhere League' (UK)(Who ? Remember when Metallica did the song 'So What' on MTV . That song is by the Anti-Nowhere League) 'Kings and Queens Cd' .
Also Ricky Tomlinson single 'Christmas my arse'

It all depends on what type of music you're into. Mainstream Metal/rock is pretty bad right now. But if you're into the harder stuff, the "underground" is where it's at for sure.
The stuff on the smaller labels can be dificult to find at retail stores, but a lot of online distros carry the smaller label stuff.
Prosthetic, eulogy, relapse and Metal blade deal in good hard rock/metal. Most of which you'll never see on MTV and VH1.

Also Ricky Tomlinson single 'Christmas my arse' "Scume" is probably Napalm Death's best album. It's raw and nasty, just the way grind should be. "The Code is Red, Long live the Code" was decent, but I thought "Smear Campaign" was a much better effort overall. Afterall Napalm Death basicaly pioneered the grind genre, if it wasn't for them awesome bands like Pig Destroyer, Rotten Sound, and Cicrle of Dead Children wouldn't exist.

Also, if you like Napalm Death you should check out Pig Destroyer. They are probably one of the best grindcore acts out today. They're extremely fast with lyrics that are basically poetry. Not your usual kill kill bad rhyme scheme crap ala Cannibal Corpse. In an interview a while back, the singer basically said all the lyrics are "Love songs to himself".
