Really? I much prefer the last two albums that Tool has done and not the "OOOH ME ANGRY!" Maynard. Everything just fits together so well in those last two and while the first three (Or first two and an LP) were pretty good, Tool is just starting to find itself recently.

Undertow has a much gittier sound as compared to the later albums. Lateralus and the new one sound very similar and seem mostly uninspired compared to Anema and Undertow.

I see where you're coming from there, but I have to disagree. You get so much more from Adam Jones on the new album, Maynard's becoming a much better writer ("Right in Two" is arguably his best non-APC effort yet) and musically they just try so much new stuff on 10,000 Days. (Adam Jones even busts out the talk machine on "Jambi".)
So, yes, while I see where you're coming from (and I even see an argument as to why Anema is their best album) I really can't get it from Undertow. It just falls flat under each category for me.
So while you like the sound more, I think the substance of the band has entirely transcended whatever shortfallings you think they have encountered from similarlities in music.

Bruce Springsteen- The River Jay-Z- The Blueprint Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magik Ice Cube- Death Certificate Guns N' Roses- Appetite For Destruction This was someone who's list I was really curious about... and it lived up to what I expected- diverse and a little surprising, just like its creator (haven't seen much of Joe lately- glad to have him back).

Wu Tang Clan's "36 Chambers" is one of the few rap albums I really enjoy. It just flows. If you don't understand what i mean by "flow", give it a listen, you'll understand.

I've thought about my list long and hard before deciding to post it, mainly because some of these, some people will never have heard of. But here, from 1973 on, my desert island discs (chronological order):
1975: Heaven and Hell by Vangelis (yeah, the Chariots of Fire guy)
1986: So by Peter Gabriel
1991: Achtung Baby by U2
1993: The First Day by David Sylvian (of Japan) & Robert Fripp (of King Crimson)
1994: Brave by Marillion (probably would be #1 if I had to rank them)
Some also-rans:
1979: The Wall by Pink Floyd
1982: The Golden Age of Wireless by Thomas Dolby
1982: Asia by Asia
1984: Poland: The Warsaw Concert by Tangerine Dream
1985: Power Windows by Rush
1990: Violator by Depeche Mode
1994: Talk by Yes
2005: Marbles by Marillion

Here are mine, in no partcular order: 1) Rush: Counterparts -- I could really pick any Rush album... I chose Counterparts because it has somre really good lyrical songs ( Nobody's Hero, Paperback Writer, etc) on top of Rush's usual awesomeness. 2) Billy Joel: 52nd Street -- This was my first rock album, and Until the Night is my Wife's and I's song 3) Stone Temple Pilots: Core -- Scott Weiland could be the greatest singer/songwriter of all time if he didn't need Heroin to be creative, IMO. This album turned me onto the Grunge scene, and was really the first 90s album I owned 4) Soul Asylum: Let Your Dim Light Shine -- Sure they have their goofy moments, but David Pirner (the lead singer and writer of most of the stuff) really spoke to me after I first go married. Grave Dancers Union could easily be here as well 5) Eric Clapton: From the Cradle -- The album that helped me to realize just how good classic Blues is. Had there not been the date restriction, The White Album would definately be on here somewhere... besides being awseome, it has a special place in my heart as the first cassette I stole from my dad when he started buying CDs... not to mention Rocky Raccoon was the song I sand to my little sister when she was a baby to get her to sleep. That's all for me

Anyone notice that none of us who picked a Rush album, which is several, picked the same album? How much does that catalog rock?

My personal top 5 Rush albums:
1) Power Windows
2) Counterparts
3) Moving Pictures
4) Roll the Bones
5) Signals (for the keyboard freak in me)
Oh, I could go on...
EDIT: And yes, I own them all, at least the studio albums. Missing a couple live ones.

5- Phil Collins But Seriously Yea I said it. Probably the first album I ever liked rather than singles
4- Pearl Jam Ten I wore some of the tracks out on the CD
3- 2pac All Eyes on Me If discovered earlier it would have the fate of number 2
2- DMX ...And Then There Was X Got me into rap
1- Metallica S&M Started my obsession with this band and I'll never forget One or Sandman with an orchestra
