Just saw Superman Returns and frankly, it rocks! It is so much better than the previews and stills. Yes, Brandon Roth looks gay in the stills but he looks a lot better in the actual movie. It is a direct sequell to Superman II but it also takes a Batman Begins approach in that the director goes in directions the comic would never (or has never) gone. Really pleased with the way this turned out. As a side note, they ran the trailer for Spider-man 3 and it looks cool as hell also. It's got Venom, the Sandman, and Hobgoblin in it. Sweet! As a comic fan, Superman is my favorite super hero. The fact that they do take the story in directions that the comic would never go is exactly why I am not going to see the movie. I do understand the need to reinvent a character to fit different types of audiences and that most of the people who will enjoy the movie will never pick up a comic book. But as a comic book and Superman fan, the guy in blue tights and red cape in this movie is not really Superman to me.

OK, I saw the movie last night and it was very, very good. Not to the level of "Batman Begins" in terms of storyline, but very good nonetheless. Seeing it in IMAX 3D was definitely an experience. I'd give the movie probably an 8/10, perhaps 7 or 7.5 had I seen it on a "regualar" movie screen. However, there is one HUGE plot hole.....
OK, Superman has been gone for 5 years and we know Jason is his son. OK, so Superman and Lois have sex, Superman leaves without saying goodbye. Lois has the baby 9 months later, which means at the oldest the kid is 4 years and 3 months old. However, perhaps "5 years" was an estimate, then perhaps he has been gone for maybe 5 years and 4 months, which would still put the kid at less than 5 years old. Yet, he's in school, and getting letter grades in science and gym? Huh? Since when do 4 or 5 year old kids get letter grades anyway? He'd have to be at minimum in 2nd or 3rd grade for that. The kid is also too big and articulate to be 4 or 5 anyway.
Also, Richard is an idiot. Yes, he did come to realize Jason wasn't his, but originally he thought it was his. OK...so did Lois, who was madly in love with Superman, go right out and find a replacement? I doubt it. So how could Richard not figure out the "timing" of the birth in regards to its conception. Unless Lois was just a very *friendly* person and was with them both at around the same time, but that's doubtful.
Admin Edit: Changed to black-out spoilers.

The above plot point is EXACTLY why I am choosing not to see this movie. It really doesn't make a lot of sense, seems to be there only to surprise people, and just creates a big mess. I will stick with my Superman comic books.

I watched it last night and was pleasantly surprised with the emotional depth of the thing. Honestly, the only one-dimensional performance from a major character in the whole movie was Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, as I have seen cartoon portrayals of Lex with more substance.
Don't misunderstand, I thought Spacey was entertaining...just one dimensional. Even his underling Kitty had more depth.
It was very enjoyable and much less angsty than every superhero movie I've seen since...the invention of superhero movies, I think...which was a nice change of pace. I admit that I was stunned...Brandon Routh can act. He played Clark and Superman incredibly well.
I could have done without the Super-Kid, not because I think it's heresy to give Superman and Lois a kid, but because I thought it was kinda cheesy and I generally hate child actors when they're given roles of any real size.
My favorite character was EASILY Richard White, who I felt so bad for...and make no mistake, he's that kid's only hope of a real upbringing (and I think Superman knows it), because Supes is kinda busy saving the world and Lois is the most emotionally distant "mother" ever.

This was a solid movie, I thought it was a solid performance by Brad Routh... in the end this was one of the best movies I've seen so far this summer. It was good to see the original Jimmy Olsen from the Television Series, and the original Louis Lane from the same show. Excellent Movie!

well, no one read my post about the movie that I originally set for those who had seen the movie (since people on this thread may not have seen the movie yet).
But anyway, I thought that this was a standard one-dimensional Superman movie, although Brandon Routh did a spot-on Christopher Reeves impression as far as the way he played Clark Kent.
Someone called Kevin Spacey one-dimensional as Lex Luthor? Since when was the whole Superman franchise anything *but* a one-dimensional storyline?
And yes, if Superman Returns is supposed to continue after Superman II, then Superman and Lois *did* have sex. Shortly after Superman blasted himself with the Kryptonian ray that turned him into a human for a short period of time. Otherwise I don't know how Kryptonians and Earthlings would cross-breed.

I stand by what I said...Spacey was the only one-dimensional performance from the main adult cast.
Everyone else had some kind of characterization other than the surface, except Luthor. He was still entertaining, mind you...but one dimensional.
Michael Rosenbaum as Luthor on Smallville churns out weekly complex characterizations (counteracted by everyone else on that show acting one dimensional...hm)
Before we left for the theatre, we caught part of Superman III...Annette O'Toole (Martha Kent on Smallville) played Lana Lang...she was WAY hotter than Kristen Kruek (the current Lana)...just sayin'.

At least this emotionally-distant girlfriend won't telekenetically shred him to atoms like the one in his last movie did. OMG! Phoenix didn't kill Cyclops -- she just sent him to Superman's unvierse! All kidding aside, though, I agree. Marsden's character was one of the movie's highpoints for me -- although I liked Spacey's Luthor.

why would you feel sorry for James Marsden? Everywhere I've seen/heard of him, he always plays that wimpy nice guy that doesn't deserve the hot chick (including his role on Ally McBeal, although I didn't watch that show and have only heard about his role).
Just like if I were watching the Star Wars movies for the first time now, I never would have wanted Luke to get the girl... besides the fact that she later turned out to be his sister but still kissed him at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back.
Just sayin'.

then again, Superman is also the same kind of soft/nice guy type character too. Come to think of it, Marsden is marginally cooler than Superman without the super powers. Maybe I should be feeling sorry for him, though I'm used to Marsden playing the chump who gets his woman stolen.

He didn't come across as "wimpy nice guy" at all in Superman...he came across as good, decent man who was willing to do whatever it took to protect his family.
After seeing the criminally small part he had in X3 and then this, I'm not dying to see him as Jesse Custer in a Preacher film...my respect for Marsden as an actor has grown in leaps and bounds.

Im probably one of the biggest comic fans on this board and I buy Superman books every month. This movie was as good as the older movies to me anyway. Dont get me wrong I hate Brian Singer as a director but Superman was done justice. Xmen 3 or Superman Returns watch the Man of Steel 10 times. I think Routh was the best thing about the Superman movie no lie. You gotta know that Singer would butcher any comic story so doing a sequel to the old movies was fair enough.

I really enjoyed the movie even though it shouldn't have been 3 hrs, the Superman/LOis Lane realtionship got alot more weighty and one question. How could Lois know Superman was the father of the boy when in superman e gave her a mind-clearing kiss to make her forget the fortress incident!

How could Lois know Superman was the father of the boy when in superman e gave her a mind-clearing kiss to make her forget the fortress incident! A few possible answers here: 1) Lois' little boy has exhibitted enough meta-human talents for her to assume he's the son of Superman 2) A more "gushy" explanation is that the power of love gives clarity and certainty to one's mind. Lois' love for Superman is so strong that it could only be he that fathers her first born. 3) The third and most obvious answer is that the "encounter" happened after the kiss of forgetfulness (and considering how un-Superman-like this little kiss was, I bet Singer elected to forget it ever happened).

I finally saw Superman Returns today. Overall I personally liked it but really nowhere near as much as either last year's Batman Begins or Richard Donner's version of Superman or Superman II.
But I was sort of surprised that none of the reporters (who are supposed to be really smart people) that worked with Lois Lane found it odd that Superman and Clark Kent basically reappeared on the same day after they were both absent for 5 years. Lois and her fiancee even remarked that Kent and Superman had about the same physical features but did not put two and two together. I guess they just automatically thought too much of Kent as a physical buffoon to make the connection.

Kent is a goof! He's a dork! He is not as cool as Superman. No way, man, no way!
