I had one and, admit it, you did too. When we were not playing CotG in those formative years, the Nintendo Entertainment System was always there.
So what were your favorite games? I will not ask for "Top 5" or anything because I will be editing this list as others put up their faves, I am sure ;D
1. Metroid- Man this game was awesome. Great game play, neat creatures, and fun levels to explore. I liked how you could only have either the Wave Beam or the Ice Beam not both. A small gift for winning in a certain time. The Screw Attack is still the best video game weapon ever created. I once challenged a friend to see who was better at Metriod. I started first. After one hour, I died a few rooms before Mother Brain (those Metroids could be tricky sometime). He conceded I was better.
2. Bionic Commando- A pretty obscure title, this Capcom game featured a guy that had an extendable mechanical claw from his right arm to swing around on. The bionic arm was a little tricky to get used to but eventually, you would find yourself swinging all over the place like Tarzan on speed! Some fun guns and a silly story about a Zombie Hitler guy made this one great.
3. River City Ranson- Another obscure title, this one by Technos (I think), RCR was an absolute classic game. This was a beat em up RPG. You had to go through various city streets beating up gangs with names like the Frat Boys. You could use weapons like pipes, bats, chains and rocks. You increased your abilities by eating things like spaghetti and teriaki chicken, and leanred new combat moves like Stone Hands or Dragon Feet by reading books. Fun, fun game. I miss this one.
4. Pro Wrestling. This was the original wrestling game for the NES. It was also one of the best. From classic guys like Star Man to the fun details like the Pirhana guy's choke and then look at the ref and claim innocence, this game was fantastic. I once got all of the way up to Giant Panther with King Slender, by using his patented backbreaker- that move was available from the beginning of the match (other heavy damage moves like the vertical suplex and the piledriver were not)- all you had to do to activate it was hit the "A" button. Fighter Hayabusa's Back Brain Kick was tough to hit.
5. Kid Icarus- A Nintendo made game that starred a winged kid with a bow, as he traveled through various Greek mythologically- inspired realms. I alwyas hated the little robber guys and the guys you could not kill.
6. The Legend of Zelda.- This is what got me into playing Nintendo. I loved playing and replaying this game. Trying to solve all of the puzzles and find all of the secret openings. I even remember the ditty of the original commerical "The Legend of Zelda is really rad/ Those creatures from Gannon are really bad/ Moblins, octorocks and leevers, too/ But with your help, our Hero'll pull through."
7. Tecmo World Wrestling- This came out several years after Pro Wrestling, and, IMO, was a big improvemnt. The graphics were much improved, there were a few more characters, and the movesets were widened. Figure Four leglocks, North Lights suplex and pin, Scorpion Deathlocks, Power Bombs, this game was great. I cannot remember any of the characters, though. There was an announcer on the bottom that said ridiculous and nonsensical things like true announcers do. I still do not know what an "abarash hold" is.
8. Excitebike- I used to love making my own courses with a lot of drag srtips and then a bunch of obstacles. I was not much for the races on the computer generated tracks, but on my own tracks, it was awesome.
Honorable mentions- Double Dragon and the Battletoads, Gunsmoke, Castlevaina III, Ultima II, Final Fantsay, Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!!, Lifeforce, Marble Madness, Archon, Trojan, Tecmo Bowl II and any of the Konami games with the legendary "A, B, B, A" code.
