SUMMER SHOWDOWN Card #240 – 08/10/2007 Municipal Stadium – Cleveland, OH
Welcome to SUMMER SHOWDOWN, the NWF’s annual summer extravaganza! We’ve got a great show, with both the NWF and North American championships on the line, along with a whole bunch of other great matches, plus a special appearance by the Eighth Wonder of the World – Andre the Giant! Let’s get to the action… 1. Antonino Rocca & Ilio DiPaolo b Danny Doring & Virgil Doring and Virgil have had recent run-ins with Rocca resulting in this tag match. Rocca beat both in singles, but lost a tag match last week with Cousin Luke as his partner. This week, Rocca’s regular partner DiPaolo was ready for action, and the NWF’s most popular duo manhandled their opponents, with Virgil submitting to Rocca’s Backbreaker.
2. Missing Link b Bobby Heenan After being liberated from the Heenan Family by Ted DiBiase & Steve Williams, Link has sought revenge against those who badly mistreated him when he was their bodyguard. Heenan had all the steel chairs around ringside removed before he would get into the ring, trying to eliminate Link’s weapon of choice. After some early interference had “The Brain” in the driver’s seat, Link turned the tables. He won with the Back Flying Headbutt, proving that his hard noggin is weapon enough.
3. The Fabulous Kangaroos b S.D. Jones & Cousin Luke The debut of the Kangaroos and their talkative manager had been built up for weeks. The tag-team specialists showed off their unique double-teaming skills and cut off the ring on S.D. Jones. Luke never could make a tag, but did save Special Delivery after a Boomerang before Costello put away Jones with an Aussie Suplex. Wild Red Berry said that by virtue of just showing up, his duo is already the top team in the area.
4. Curt Hennig b Danny Hodge The second fantastic singles match between these two (Hodge got a hard fought win back on July 20th). Early on, it looked like Hodge would cruise to another victory. Hennig was a bloody mess after taking a header into the ring post. Curt was groggy, but used some dirty tactics and a handful of tights to get a pin attempt that was broken up by Yukon Eric. Late in the bout, Larry Hennig broke up an attempted Oklahoma Sideroll to save his son. That gave Curt the chance to hit a Hennig-Plex to even the score with Hodge headed into the big tag-team title rematch next week.
5. Special Attraction: Andre the Giant b Larry Sharpe, George South & Johnny Rodz (Handicap Match) A huge (literally) special attraction as Andre the Giant took on three men in a handicap match. After nearly pinning Rodz and South, he let them tag out to bring in a fresh man. Once he got Sharpe in the ring, the game playing ceased. The Eighth Wonder of the World dominated and pinned Sharpe with the Big Squash. Rodz & South jumped the big man after the bell, but Andre headbutted them both, stacked up all three and did another Big Squash to delight the crowd.
6. Riviera Playboys b Bob & Brad Armstrong (Best of Three Falls) Another battle between these intense rivals. The Armstrongs’ bad luck continued, as they seem to dominate the action, but can’t buy a win. Bullet Bob absolutely lost it in the first fall with all of Sherri’s antics at ringside. She tossed a chair to Koko, but Brad intercepted it! As the ref turned around, Koko dropped and pretended to be KO’d. The ref saw Brad with the chair and called for the DQ, giving the Playboys the first fall. Second fall saw more shenanigans as Sherri was all over the place. Koko got mauled by both Bob & Brad, but survived with some help from Buddy Rose. That gave a fresh Rose the opportunity to tag in. He immediately blasted Bob with some type of object that Sherri handed him, and followed with the Bombs Away to give the Riviera Playboys a 2-0 victory in a match they should have lost.
7. Rick Rude b Diamond Dallas Page Rude scored a quick victory after two straight Rude Awakenings. It did appear DDP had a shoulder up just before the three count. Bundy came to the ring and the recently formed team did a number on DDP, who appeared badly hurt. Page is still looking for a regular tag-team partner, and could have used some help here.
8. Larry Hennig dq Yukon Eric These two tanks have had a pretty good feud built around the tag-team title challenges. The match was a series of big power moves, and had a bunch of near falls. Curt saved his father early on, and later Hodge attempted to do the same for his partner. Hodge isn’t used to being sneaky and got caught by the ref, causing Yukon to be DQ’d.
9. Magnificent Muraco & Greg Valentine dq Mad Dog Vachon & Jimmy Valiant This tag bout was sparked by recent matches with Vachon & Valiant against Muraco. It turned into a very good contest. Albano’s team had the early edge, but Mad Dog & Boogie made a comeback and bloodied Muraco. Action went back and forth from there for quite a while. It all blew up when Valentine had the Figure Four Leglock on Valiant, and was getting illegal help from Muraco on the apron to increase his leverage. Vachon, never known for his patience, went bananas and attacked both opponents, even threatening to use his dreaded Algerian chains! The fans loved it, but unfortunately, the referee had no choice but to call for the bell.
10. North American Championship: The Sheik b Ivan Koloff (Texas Death Match) After splitting DQ decisions, it was time to throw the rulebook out the window and let two of wrestling’s most hated combatants go to town! This was insane bloodbath (14 fatigue total) of a match! Koloff killed Sheik from the start, putting him in deep trouble and doing extensive damage. Sheik kept barely staying alive and, as is his pattern, made a huge comeback after an out of ring skirmish. He worked over Koloff’s back and left arm. Both men were awash in blood by this stage. Koloff made a comeback, but then Sheik did the same in this classic brawl that went all over stadium infield and chased fans from their seats numerous times. The bloodletting finally ended when Sheik locked in the Camel Clutch to get the incredible victory and retain the title.
11. NWF Championship: Nick Bockwinkel b Steve Williams The Bockwinkel/Williams saga dates back to the World League Challenge, when Williams was chosen as the United States representative over Bockwinkel. Bock was bitter, and cost Williams his first round match in the tournament. Williams vowed revenge, and entered the NWF once his other commitments were met. Doc had gone unbeaten since his debut, and pinned the champ in a non-title match on July 20th. As Williams came to the ring, he was attacked from behind by Ray Stevens, who took a chair to the challenger’s knee. This allowed Bockwinkel to roll up an early advantage once the bell rang. A determined Williams came back, but Bockwinkel blocked four backdrop driver attempts (the move used by Williams to win the non-title bout). Ted DiBiase, in a neck brace from a Heenan Family attack on July 27th, came to the ring just in time to prevent Heenan from interfering. In the ring, Williams was putting on a gutsy performance, but was never able to fully shake off the damage from Stevens’ sneak attack. The finish saw Stevens feign an attack on DiBiase to draw Williams’ attention. Bockwinkel then clipped Doc’s already roughed up knee from behind and started working over the leg. The champ locked in the Figure Four, and it was clear that Williams was unable to break the hold. The referee wound up calling for the bell as Williams refused to give up, but was clearly in no shape to continue.
Another NWF supercard is in the books! There is already fallout from the matches that will cause plenty of havoc next week in Niagara Falls!
* DDP appears to have another rib injury that would ordinarily keep him out for nearly two months, but he has already said he will not miss any bookings and is ready for next week’s tag match against Rude & Bundy! No word yet on who his partner may be.
* Bob Armstrong has asked for, and received a singles bout against Playboy Buddy Rose next week!
* Mad Dog Vachon & Jimmy Valiant have signed for a match to face Lou Albano’s regular tag-team duo of Greg Valentine & Ivan Koloff next week!
* Your big main event will see newly crowned tag champions Larry & Curt Hennig face former champs Yukon Eric & Danny Hodge! Can Yukon & Hodge once again become unlikely champions?
* "Dr. Death" Steve Williams will face Ray Stevens in Niagara Falls, but has demanded one last rematch against Nick Bockwinkel for the NWF Title! With each man holding a win over the other, a third match would seem logical, but you can bet Bobby Heenan will have his attorneys working overtime to find a way out of it!
All this and more next week from the Convention Center in Niagara Falls, NY!

*** NWF BREAKING NEWS*** More news for the 8/17 show in Niagara Falls: The first meeting between members of the Flying Redheads and the Fabulous Kangaroos will take place next week in Niagara Falls! Billy “Red” Lyons has signed for a singles match against Kangaroo captain Al Costello! The Redheads are considered the NWF’s top technical team, and say that Red Berry’s claims of the Kangaroos mat expertise are greatly exaggerated! In addition to Bob Armstrong facing Buddy Rose, Brad Armstrong will square off against Koko B. Ware in another meeting between the Armstrongs and the Riviera Playboys! Sherri Martel's rinside antics have Bullet Bob at wits end, and you know she'll do everything she can to make sure her wrestlers win!! In other NWF news: Antonino Rocca has been handed the next chance to dethrone North American champ The Sheik! That match will take place at the Rochester War Memorial in two weeks! The NWF is working hard to put together a rematch between champion Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) and challenger Steve Williams! Bobby Heenan is saying that Williams had his chance and blew it! Williams is saying that if it weren’t for Ray Stevens’ pre-match attack, there would be a new NWF champion! There’s more to come on this story, so stay tuned! Speaking of Bobby Heenan, there are sketchy rumors that he’s been trying to recruit Curt Hennig into the Heenan Family! Good luck, as Curt is very loyal to his father Larry, and The Axe is a Heenan-hater from way back!

Card #241 – 08/17/2007 Convention Center – Niagara Falls, NY
Here we go! After a successful SUMMER SHOWDOWN in Cleveland, we make our way East on Route 90 to Niagara Falls, NY! You’ll see a big rematch for the tag-team straps as well as Steve Williams looking to get back at the Heenan Family for last week’s craziness! Let’s get to the action…
1. Larry Zbyszko b S.D. Jones Zbyszko needed a win, as he’s been on a slide since losing the North American Title to The Sheik. Jones did very well, but Zbyszko kept wearing him down until finally putting him away with the Piledriver. Bobby Heenan was not at ringside, choosing to stay in the dressing room and work with Ray Stevens on strategy for his match with Steve Williams later in the evening.
2. Antonino Rocca b George South It has been announced that Rocca will get the title shot at The Sheik next week. He made quick work of South as a tune up. The Sheik made an attempt to get at Rocca after the bell, but was stopped by the plethora of security that always seems to be around whenever Sheik is present. Rocca didn’t back down and took a couple of wild swipes at the Syrian madman, but the two never got to one another.
3. King Kong Bundy & Rick Rude b Diamond Dallas Page & Larry Sharpe DDP, coming off his second big rib injury since splitting with Bundy, chose Jersey native “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe as a partner. DDP held his own until getting nailed a few times in the rib area. Sharpe didn’t do well and was crushed by a Bundy Avalanche to end things. It looks like DDP’s tag partner search will continue.
4. Billy “Red” Lyons b Al Costello This was the first look at the Fabulous Kangaroos in singles action. Wild Red Berry is touting the Roos as the best technical wrestlers around, although the Flying Redheads have disputed that claim. Lyons overcame some early trouble to get the win using his Figure 4 Leglock. Both Costello and Berry were very upset at the result.
5. Koko B. Ware b Brad Armstrong This was kind of a slow paced match with each man being cautious. Crowd was into this, as the Armstongs/Riviera Playboys feud has become popular with the fans. After close calls on both sides, Koko won a controversial decision when he pinned Brad with a cross body block. Brad has his foot on the ropes at two, but Sherri knocked it off before the ref could see.
6. Greg Valentine & Ivan Koloff dq Mad Dog Vachon & Jimmy Valiant The battle between Albano’s stable and Vachon & Valiant is starting to heat up already. The fan favorites had the early advantage, but Vachon got caught in the wrong corner and double-teamed. By the end of the bout, all four were hurting after lots of big moves and finishers almost ended the contest. The finish saw Koloff land a low blow on Valiant that the ref missed. Boogie retaliated with the same move right in front of the ref for the DQ.
7. Playboy Buddy Rose b Bob Armstrong Here’s a shock – Armstrong dominated but got shafted at the finish. This has been the recurring theme of the feud. Sherri Martel saved Rose once, and the Playboy came back to win with a sunset flip where he held the ropes for leverage in this long match. 8. Ray Stevens dq Steve Williams After Stevens cost Williams the title at SUMMER SHOWDOWN, Doc was looking for revenge. He got it, and then some, although it cost him the victory. After some exchanges early on, Williams just buried Stevens with a backdrop driver. It was Doc’s match from there, as he was unrelenting in his attack. With Stevens tied up in the ropes, Williams would not stop his pounding assault, and was DQ’d by the referee. NWF champion Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) was at ringside, and it was clear that Williams was sending a message with the beating.
9. NWF Tag-Team Championship: Larry & Curt Hennig b Yukon Eric & Danny Hodge The Hennigs ended the 24 card reign of Yukon & Hodge (2nd longest tag reign in NWF history) and were looking to stay unbeaten and knock their opponents off the contender list for good. The powerhouses started, but it was their more technical counterparts that were involved in the finish. It was a perfect standing dropkick by Curt that put Hodge down for the count and kept the Hennigs’ win streak alive. The Hennigs have handed Yukon & Hodge their only two pinfall losses as a team. And somewhere, Kevin Butcher smiled…
We’re off and running as we near the end of summer! Next week we’ll be back on the NYS Thruway and headed to Rochester, NY! Here’s the lineup so far:
* The Fabulous Kangaroos will be in tag-team action once again! The Flying Redheads have offered to be their opponents, but Wild Red Berry doesn’t seem too crazy about that idea!
* The Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant will tackle the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff! The two had some great brawls back in their Mid-Atlantic days and are ready to start some fireworks in the NWF!
* Diamond Dallas Page will face former partner King Kong Bundy! DDP is showing a lot of guts by fighting through his second rib injury. He’s even started looking outside the NWF for tag partners, and wants to find someone with a solid tag-team background.
* “Dr. Death” Steve Williams will tag with S.D. Jones (since DiBiase is still out with an injury) against the Heenan Family duo of Ray Stevens & Larry Zbyszko! Williams is fired up and looking to secure another title bout against Bockwinkel at any cost!
* The North American Title will be on the line in your big main event as The Sheik defends against Antonino Rocca! The popular Rocca struggled against the Syrian madman back in their October 2006 encounter – can he use his unique aerial style to take down the maniacal champion?
All this and more next week at the Rochester War Memorial (no Fuji Film allowed)!

*** NWF BREAKING NEWS *** The following matches have just been added to the Rochester show: * Mad Dog Vachon will take on Larry "the Axe" Hennig! Vachon certainly doesn't shy away from bigger opponents, and this will be a tough test for both men! * Popular Ilio DiPaolo will face Curt Hennig! Obviously there is still some ill will between the Rocca/DiPaolo and Hennig teams! Other news: * New Castle, PA will be rockin' hard as the big title rematch between NWF champ Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) and Steve Williams is signed, sealed and delivered for August 31st! The only way Williams could get the match was to sign off on a clause stating it will be his last title shot while Bockwinkel holds the belt! You know Bobby Heenan will have some devious scheme to keep the gold around Bock's waist! * Also on the 31st, there will be a match to determine who will get the next tag-team title shot at Larry & Curt Hennig! The teams have not yet been announced, as the results of the Rochester show could have some bearing on the decision.

Card #242 – 08/24/2007 War Memorial – Rochester, NY
Welcome to Rochester, NY - the worldwide corporate headquarters of Eastman Kodak (and manufacturer of the official film of the NWF)! We’ve got another great show lined up including a title defense by The Sheik, the Fabulous Kangaroos in tag action, the Boogie Woogie Man against the Russian Bear and lots more! Let’s get to the action…
1. Rick Rude b Cousin Luke Quite a contrast in body types here. Rude controlled most of the match against this tusslin’ hillbilly, and got the pin when Luke missed an all or nothing top rope splash.
2. The Fabulous Kangaroos b Danny Doring & Virgil Wild Red Berry and the Kangaroos claim to be the world’s greatest technical tag-team, but seem to be avoiding the Flying Redheads. While Doring & Virgil are not well loved, they had a lot of support here, as the fans already despise the arrogant Aussies. Doring got beaten up but survived thanks to interference from his partner. When Virgil tagged in, he didn’t fare much better, eventually being pinned by the Boomerang.
3. Ivan Koloff b Jimmy Valiant Good brawling in this USA vs. USSR showdown. Crowd was solidly behind Valiant, who would have had the match won twice if not for Lou Albano’s interference. Valiant got the best of the many out of ring exchanges until Koloff drove him back first into the steel ring post. The evil Russian kept his focus on Valiant’s lower back from that point on, and got the win with the Russian Bearhug.
4. Larry Hennig b Mad Dog Vachon Vachon was all over the elder Hennig and was just vicious. Larry was down and out after a Mad Dog Pounce, but Greg Valentine came to ringside and distracted Vachon. That gave Hennig a moment to recover, and as an unwary Mad Dog turned around he was blasted with the Axe and pinned.
5. King Kong Bundy b Diamond Dallas Page DDP is a gamer, and even though his ribs needed to be heavily taped, he took this match against the mammoth Bundy. Earlier in the week, DDP announced that he had found a tag-team partner who would debut next week in New Castle. He could have used some help this night, as every time he gained an advantage, Rick Rude would do something to turn things around. The finish saw DDP hit a Diamond Cutter, but Rude pulled him out of the ring and gave him a stomach breaker. He tossed DDP in the ring as the referee, who had been dazed earlier, cleared the cobwebs. Bundy squashed Page with an Avalanche and got the dreaded 5 count.
6. The Riviera Playboys b Bob & Brad Armstrong Another marathon bout between these teams. Once again, it was the Armstrongs who doing most of the damage until Sherri Martel’s antics turned things around. Bob got double-teamed and bloodied up, so Brad had to hold his own against the devious Playboys, and did a great job. Eventually though, Brad was worn down and pinned with a double team backbreaker.
7. Ilio DiPaolo ddq Curt Hennig This one ended quickly as the Ilio had Hennig in the leg nelson, but got pulled out of the ring by Larry Hennig. Antonino Rocca ran out from the locker room and all four wound up in a brawl for the double DQ. 8. Steve Williams & S.D. Jones ddq Ray Stevens & Larry Zbyszko It’s déjà vu all over again with a second straight quick double DQ in this match. Williams and Stevens jumped each other at the bell and were throwing bombs. In the heat of their battle, both manhandled the referee, who then called for the bell. Nick Bockwinkel came to the ring and tried to sneak attack Williams, but Doc saw him and knocked him out of the ring with a football tackle. As the crowd cheered, the Heenan Family decided to leave this encounter until next week.
9. North American Championship: The Sheik b Antonino Rocca These two fought in October 2006 with Sheik getting a win in a fairly one-sided bout. It was a lot tougher road this time as the popular Rocca busted Sheik open quickly and looked great. The Sheik was in big trouble before (as usual) getting some payback outside the ring. The crowd was going crazy as Rocca had Sheik in the Backbreaker twice, but Sheik escaped the first and Abdullah Farouk broke up the second. Sheik took over and was working over Rocca’s back with the Camel Clutch, but Rocca fought back with a variety of aerial moves. With his title seemingly slipping away, the Syrian madman used a Fireball when the referee was distracted by Farouk and got the pin over a blinded Rocca! Ilio DiPaolo came to the ring to chase The Sheik away and to aid his fallen partner. As this was happening, Larry & Curt Hennig came in and attacked both men, leaving both laying in the ring and nearly causing the crowd to riot.
What a way to end the show! The Hennigs needed a police escort out of the building, and have become a hated team due to their bouts with Rocca & DiPaolo. We’ll see how this plays out as we end August in New Castle, PA at the North Laurel Junior High School Gym with a huge main event and lots of other great action! Here’s the lineup so far:
* DDP has promised we’ll see the debut of his new tag-team partner! All he’ll reveal is that it’s someone who has a great tag background, and won’t be afraid to mix it up with Bundy or Rude!
* Speaking of King Kong Bundy & Rick Rude, they’ll see tag-team action against the father-son combo of Bob & Brad Armstrong!
* The Flying Redheads tried to get a match with the Kangaroos, but Wild Red Berry said that Roy Heffernan had already signed for a singles match against Cousin Luke, so the tag bout will have to wait for another day!
* Mad Dog Vachon will look for a little revenge on the man who cost him a win this week as he takes on Greg “the Hammer” Valentine!
* Jimmy Valiant gets a rematch against evil Ivan Koloff with no one allowed at ringside! Will the absence of Lou Albano give the Boogie Woogie Man the edge he needs to win?
* Your huge main event will see Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) defend the NWF Title against #1 contender Steve “Dr. Death” Williams! By virtue of the contract, this will be Doc’s last title shot so long as Bockwinkel holds the belt! The way his title reign has gone, that could be a loooong time, as Bockwinkel will enter the match having held the gold for more than 500 days!
Hang onto your hats, fans! All this and much more is seven days away in New Castle!

I'm saying Tricky Nick retains in seven days. Bundy and Rude should be close to the front of he line for a tag title shot. They've been racking up the wins ( granted most against DDP and assorted partners but never the less), their win loss record is damn good. the Sheik should be seeing a title shot soon, the man is incredible. He could end Bocks reign of dominance. great card and still the best fed any where on the boards. more.................................
