Who is your favorite comedian? Yeah, you can only pick ONE.
Bill Cosby was my early fave. "The Chicken-Heart" I thought was way too funny! The Dice Man would become a favorite of mine once I was exposed to his over-the-top comedy. However, STEVEN WRIGHT is my all-time fave. I caught his first performance on the Tonight Show many, many years ago, and he's been my fave since. His comedy is so different from anything else out there, it amazed me how funny I thought his performance was! He was in Northampton, MA a few years ago, and I saw his show. For only $20, I got to hear a lot of his old stuff and plenty of new stuff!
Anyway, who's your fave? (Actually, I'm wondering if anyone would mention "Don Rickles"! )

George Carlin has such a natural delivery. He's got a great conversational tone that really pulls you in. His material is great too, with very few misfires. He's got to be the number one pick.
His comedy also translates well to the written page, and his books are a joy to read.

PABLO FRANCISCO!
You've got to check this guy out if you've never seen him. But if you've got seizure disorders, you may want to be prepared for a rather frenetic pace. The dude is hilarious.
Frank Caliendo from Mad TV's another great one. Although for the classics, Carlin and Pryor.

Carlin at the top (though IMHO he's dropped off a bit lately; both his last book and his last HBO special were tremendous disappointments. He was awesome last time out on the Tonight Show, though. Funniest facial expressions of anybody ever.)
Mitch Hedberg (see sig...no, not the "readiness to doubt" quote, that's HL Mencken)
Stephen Colbert (see avatar...OK, not a stand-up comic but close enough.)
Dave Chappelle (still awesome, but I can now see why he was less than eager for us to see the last season of his show)
Bill Hicks (not quite the godlike figure some make him out to be, but no other comedian made you think so much and laugh so much at the same time)
Alan Gordon (no-name Scottish guy who has no actual career output that I know of...but I saw him in a bar in London and he was hysterical.)
Yeah, I have a hard time narrowing these types of lists down.

Bill Engval of Blue Collar has become one of my all -time favorites. We can watch his, "Here's Your Sign" DVD over and over again.
I grew up with Bill Cosby and Rodney Dangerfield as two of my other faves.
I agree about Carlin as well.
Take care,
Jay
