"One Day Remains" by Alter Bridge "the Great Divide" by Scott Stapp and "My Own Prison" by Creed What an interesting relation of CDs there, Trav! ;D As for me, I've been listening to the new Drive-By Truckers CD which came out this past Tuesday. Great stuff.

Skid Row's Slave to the Grind . That is awesome! Skid Row was cool back in the day. Some of their songs still stand up today. The Slaver To The Grind album wasn't as good as their self-titled debut, but it had some cool, hard hitting tracks on there. Man, Slave to the Grind was great CD.

Even though they sold out their fans years ago, I've been hearing good things about Metallica's next album. I recall reading someone mentioning that it's the long awaited "bridge" between And Justice and the Black Album. I'm actually anticipating the album, something I thought I would never do again for a Tallica album after St. Anger, I know they don't deserve my money or even my "fanhood", but I just can't quit them(lol). Albums like Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets have earned them enough credit with me that I'll at least give every new album a chance.

The best part of St. Anger for me was when I went out at lunch, bought it then listened to it at my desk over and over, unable to comprehend how horrid it is/was yet unable to turn away.
But, with the back catalog they have, anything now is just bound to be a bit pale in comparison, no? They have found their way into the same territory as many bands of their vintage. They can exist solely on the basis of their old material.
As for my current listening...just acquired the new Protest the Hero CD, Fortress. I am mixing that alongside some Kalmah (The Black Waltz), and whatever else the Zune shuffle comes up with...its pretty much 20gb of metal so its usually something interesting.

After almost 2 years of lurking, Duclos actually posted (in response to the crapfest known as St, Anger no less). I'm in shock.

You like that little segue?
I aim to please....
But seriously, between the overly long songs and the tin can drums...it was a rough day of CD listening, yet oddly compelling at the same time. You keep spinning the disc, waiting to see if perhaps it isnt that bad...

Sure, anything they put out now will probably pale in comparison to the stuff from the 80's. But I'm not asking for much.
And anyway, if this next album is what I've heard Lars in interviews say it is, and goes "back to their roots", then can you imagine the hoopla? It's a metal fans wet dream - Metallica, back playing metal.
I actually have faith in Rick Rubin that he'll pull a rabbit out of his hat, and at least get these guys playing quality music again, something in which St, Anger was not.

But each time I take it out, usually not 2 songs in. The album's main problem was the terrible production and Hetfield's strained vocals.

True, if anything Rick Rubin brings something new to the table and can hopefully get a bit more 'metal' out of them. Here's hoping it pans out.

The production kills it before it even begins, but it has these little glimpses of something good, then an overload of wretchedness piled on top. Thus the oddly compelling nature of the CD. Course, I dont listen to anything post Justice now...once you start reaching out and learning about the more extreme/intense stuff out there its tough to stomach anything less. If I can listen to something which is well crafted and excellent all around, there really isnt much time for junk.

I actually believe Bob Rock had a huge hand in Metallica's downfall. Before the Black Album Metallica was getting more progressive and technical with each album, and recalling an old Lars interview, he actually said that the band came to the conclusionthat they needed to get away from that trend, and thus the Black Album was concieved. Blame it on Bob Rock. He sucks.

It has glimpses, but the production kills any chance of enjoyment that you might receive from the album otherwise. I'd bet that, if they play any St. Anger songs live, that they sound much better then the crapfest featured on the actual album.

Without a doubt...funny you mention that, given my current love affair with anything metal and progressive...makes a lot of sense, since I hold Justice as my personal fav. The songs were long, but they had more purpose. When you craft a good 10 minute song, it flies by...when you record in a tunnel with some pots and pans 10 minutes is just dreadful. The change in direction on the black album is so jarring when compared to what came before. But, lets see what comes of this new album. I, like you stated earlier, am bound by their past awesomeness to continue to buy the CDs even though they may or may not deliver the goods.

80's styled trash metal is making a big comeback on the independent scene. Bands like Municiple Waste and Merciless Death (two standouts) sound like theyve come straight out of 1985.
I think it would benefit Metallica, and the thrash resurgence for them to release a solid, thrash inspired metal album.
As far as And Justic is conerened, I don't think Tallica could of gone much further with the progressive tech sound they were doing towards the end of the 80's. It's like a snowball effect, at what point do you say enough is enough? Had they kept going in that direction, it wouldn't of been long until they released an album full of 20 minutes songs, and lets face it, nobody wants to listen to a 20 minute long thrash song...nobody. At least not an entire albums worth.
