I hold on to such hope every year, Neil. I just believe there's some reason for me to be optimistic this year, which is nice.

Prior's pitching again today, and hopefully i'll get to listen to most of his work. I'm anxious to see if his last start was an abberation caused by nerves or the official end of his career.

The Cubs are coming here to Las Vegas for two days to play two games against the Seattle Mariners. On Friday March 30, the Cubs and the Mariners have an evening game and then on Saturday March 31 the Cubs play the Mariners again in an afternoon game. Almost every year at the end of Spring Training, Las Vegas is the site of some Spring Training games- here they call it Big League Weekend. Because they have their Spring Training headquarters just south of here in Arizona, the Cubs are often one of the teams to come to Las Vegas for Big League Weekend and I have attended these games before here at Cashman Field (the home of the Las Vegas 51s- the AAA team of the Los Angeles Dodgers). BDS or any other Cubs fans, sometime you should come down to see the Cubs play in Las Vegas. To me, it just doesn't get much better than sitting here under the Las Vegas sun watching Major League baseball while drinking beer.

I'm trying to talk Holli into letting me move my operation to Arizona for a couple of weeks next spring. If that happens, a trip to Vegas will definitely be in the cards as well.

Hopefully the Cubs will once again be one of the teams that come to Las Vegas next year for Big League Weekend (the Cubs often do come here, the Mariners show up regularly and the Red Sox, Rockies, Dodgers, and Rangers have all also been among the teams here in recent years). These games are actually played on Las Vegas Boulevard (AKA the Strip)- but not in the casino area. Cashman Field (the site of Big League Weekend every year) is on Las Vegas Boulevard but you have to keep going north past all of the casinos to get there.

While Prior showed some improvement in his last start, he still didn't look like Prior. The fastball was topping out at 89 MPH, and while his curveball had good break on it, he had almost no command of it. Meanwhile, Angel Guzman came out hitting 97 on the gun and dropping sick curveballs across the corners.
Lou has said that Prior's next game will be a start in minor league camp, and that Gooz is going to start the next time he pitches, so maybe he's got the inside track on that fifth rotation spot. I could handle that. Marquis is also looking surprisingly good, and I'd be thrilled if he keeps that up into the season. I just don't know what all of this means for Prior's future this season and with the Cubs in general.

The Tribune has been sold to real estate billionaire Sam Zell, who owns a minority share in the White Sox. The Tribune will retain control of the Cubs until the end of the season while the fine print of the sale is worked out, and then the Cubs will be sold off to a different buyer at the end of the 2007 season.
Mark Cuban, your luxury box is waiting.

I used to LOVE Jason Marquis, until Tony LaRussa ruined him last season.. the man very nearly took my out of fantasy contention all by himself with those three starts giving up 10+ Earned runs. If the Cubs can realize which days he doesn't have his stuff and take him out, he should be a good pick up for them

A-Rod being a Cub next year is a foregone conclusion as far as I'm concerned.

The pitching staff has made me really optimistic the last four games. Quality starts each time, with Big Z calming down after his opening day jitters, Rich Hill proving that he's the man, and Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly surprising me with how well they pitched. If we can keep half of this intensity from the starters all year, it's going to be a good season.
GO CUBS!!!

Ted Lilly completely dominated my Reds on the second day of the season. He outpitched Bronson Arroyo... which is an interesting point to bring up because Lilly is like a left-handed version of Arroyo, and considering the success that Arroyo had last season after his switch to the National League, that can be a very good thing for Lilly.

WTF is going on in Chicago? Is this what 300 million buys? Clearly the boys need to spend a little more money on this problem. At least it's early, so there's still hope, and both Prior and Wood are on the DL, so my reality isn't shaken or anything. I'd really like to see the boys in blue take the next couple of games, though.

Alright, somebody help me out here. Our bullpen sucks, by and large, although Dempster has been a decent closer. Angel Guzman has looked really good as our fifth starter. So to fix the problem with the bullpen, we swap those two. I'm speechless ... this makes absolutely no sense to me. The only thing that I can think is that a lot of the stuff they might like to do, be it trading or cutting someone with a big contract that stinks *coughScottEyrecoughBobHowrycough* is prohibited by the forthcoming sale of the Trib, so Lou's just throwing out what he's allowed to do to see what sticks. Whatever the reason, though, this move isn't inspiring confidence. Personally, I think they need to start having Demp do his Chris Farley impersonation to try to distract the opposing team. If that fails, he can always resort to flipping out and killing people all ninja style.

This puts the Cubs/Whitesox (BDS/Havoc) rivalry in perspective. (warning: this link is a little risque. Young children and WTIC Promoter should not click on it)
