I went to the midnight show of Spider-man 3 Thursday night.
I was a big fan of the first movie and enjoyed the second almost as much as the first But I did not like this movie AT ALL . I was wondering what everyone else thought.
My two complaints are (this contains minor spoilers)
1. It was too dark and depressing.
I knew the movie was going to be dark. With the storyline it had to be dark. But I just thought they went a little too far. The first two movies were fun. That is what the Spiderman character is all about. It was almost hard to watch Peter Parker's behavior, especially at the jazz club.. And when you consider how many kids are into Spiderman, I just think they went a little too far. And it ends on a down note. Usually the dark chapter in a trilogy comes in the middle so that you can end the whole story on a high note in the third act. THis one ended on a down note.
2. Here is my major complaint.
There was very little Spiderman in the movie. I would say that 3/4 of the movie focuses on Peter Parker, Mary Jane, and Harry Osborn. Now this is not necessarily a bad thing. THe character development material is what made the first two movies so good. But they spent a lot of time rehashing stuff that we ALREADY saw. Peter and MJ have and argument and their relationship is strained. GEE, didn't we see that in Spider-man 2? This completely bored me just because we already saw a similar storyline. I got to the point where I was just waiting for the bad guys to do something so that we could see Spiderman and get away from the Peter and MJ stuff. And I won't even go into the tired MJ in danger here comes Spidey to the rescue plot point that we have alraedy seen. I would have rather they downplayed the Peter MJ rift and spent time on Harry Osborn and Sandman. The Harry Osborn character was GREAT and one of the highlights of the movie. He deserved more time. And the Sandman was completely underdeveloped. We got the cheesey "sick kid" angle and then for the rest of the movie he just stares at a picture of his kid on a necklace. They could have done more here. Instead we get the same old Peter and MJ strained relationship stuff.
VERY DISAPPOINTING.
