I reread a list of favorites I posted on the "Favorite Horror Movie" thread from last Halloweeen. Here's the cheap cut and paste job:
In no particular order:
THE EXORCIST (Hands down the most frightening movie ever made.)
THE EXORCIST III (AKA Legion. A very underrated sequel.)
NIGHT, DAWN, AND DAY OF THE DEAD (I like zombies. Romero is the man. We've talked about this already. Next.)
PET SEMETARY (The most effective Stephen King horror adaptation.)
THE SHINING (More Kubrick's vision than King's...Dick Halloran's explanation of things that "shine" is awesomely chilling.)
THE GATE (A childhood favorite. I always wanted a pet 'Minion' after seeing this one.)
LORD OF ILLUSIONS (A tad dated, but still bada$s.)
NIGHTBREED (Clive Barker is a twisted dude.)
THE BLOB (The seriously rad remake. I'm not kidding. The remake is rad. Seriously.)
PSYCHO (Classic. 'Nuff said.)
CREEPSHOW (You're not alone Ashby. Who doesn't enjoy seeing a murderous Leslie Neilson getting done in by Ted Danson-zombie?)
EVIL DEAD (Low budget at it's f'n finest.)
POLTERGEIST (three words: respect Zelda Rubenstein.)
EVENT HORIZON (Looks like all of us appreciate this beaut.)
ALIEN (Only the first one was true horror...and probably the best sci-fi horror flick ever made.)
THE THING (Carpenter's version - good call Werner.)
BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA (Great movie all around....Oldman is a beast.)
THE DEVIL'S REJECTS (Realistic stuff always gets me...and the soundtrack rocks. Funny, I hated House of 1,000 Corpses.)
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (The original...when Freddy hadnt gotten 'cute' yet.)
DEAD ALIVE (Peter Jackson + Zombies = A Gory Good Time!)
FEAST (A recent addition. Couldn't ask for a smarter script.)
AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON - (I saw this flick when I was like 8 years old and it scared the SHlT (gotcha
) out of me for about three nights straight. Gotta love that ending too. )
ADDED SINCE LAST TIME:
THE DESCENT - (Seriously original stuff. An all female cast, cool monsters, and a dark, claustrophic feeling throughout. Top-notch horror.)
