Any other fans out there? A couple of my students turned me on to the book, which I read over the summer - it was awesome. Been really excited about the movie coming out.

I haven't read the book, but I do know the relative age group it's supposed to be for, and this movie seems like it might be a bit more intense than the book, just from the previews I've seen. Someone who partakes of both will have to tell me if I'm off base on that.

Depends on your view of "age group." The vocabulary in the book is very high level for adolescents, which makes it ideal for adults as well. Not sure how intense the movie will be, though, since it only got a PG rating.

I'd say that the book was pretty intense too. I agree with Matt that the vocabulary is at a high level and the subject matter stays fairly mature- I'd have never known that it was written by a teenager just by reading it.

Movie was a letdown. Way too much left out of the plot from the book; should have been 45 minutes longer. Movie probably plays better for those who haven't read the book. I was very disappointed that the travels with Brom were mostly left out, along any semblance of characterization with Murtagh, who I personally find the most interesting character in the book.

I read this and the second book and I've heard the ruined the movie. I didn't know they would make a movie so take my advice and ALWAYS WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE YOU READ THE BOOK! Trust me... (Couldn’t help but to say that b/c I was thinking of Jake "the snake" Roberts)

IDK, depends on the movie. You're right for this one, though. After reading the book, the movie was really thin on the backstory and characterization. Had I not read the book, I probably wouldn't have noticed. If you like the movie, you'll love the book, but probably not vice versa.

I saw it and it was ok. Not great but good so...i read the book and they did leave a lot out.
Maybe the budget just wasn't there for a bigger movie. IMO go see it.

I think the budget was like $70 million, that's what someone told me anyway. I'm too lazy to look it up to verify. That should have been enough to make the movie longer. They didn't set themselves up well to make the second movie, since the basis for much of that book was left out of movie #1.

Yeah they left a lot out.. I’m glad I read the book a long time ago and don’t fully remember every single sentence...
