If you haven't seen the commercial for the 360 game Gears of War, go check it out. This is my favorite commercial in a long, long time. The music is fantastic, the game footage is woven beautifully along with the music, and the good guy gets eaten in the end. This is how commercials should be made. It makes me want to go play the game.

It bums me out that this awesome cover of Tears for Fears' Mad World was attached to the game to be honest.
It had a really strong impact during the final moments of Donnie Darko for me personally. Hearing it again here just waters it down.

I've actually heard someone else say that - the Donnie Darko reference. I've not seen the movie, so no big deal for me.
On a slightly unrelated note, the cover is way, way better than the original.

I agree. Awesome commercial. Love the mellow music to go along with the chaotic scene...brilliant.
not as good as the amped mobile commercial where the Asian guy is singing in the bathroom but close...

What's weirder is that it sounds like REM is the band doing the cover. It's not REM, but the guy who sang on the cover sounds a whole lot like Michael Stipe, to be sure. That hardly seems appropriate for this style of game. That's a lot of what makes it work, in my opinion. There's no game sound at all, just this mellow, almost haunting tune in the background. While the song itself doesn't seem appropriate for the genre, it certainly fits with the game's apparent atmosphere. The lyrics even work well, too ... I think it's kind of funny / I think it's kind of sad / That the dreams in which I'm dying / are the best I've ever hadIt really gives a bleak feeling to the commercial that just accents the setting shown in the graphics. If you look closely, the expression on the guy's face as he's ripping off shots at that spider thingy just serves to accentuate the hopeless vibe that the commercial gives off.

Regardless who covers or where the song originated, the commercial's truly awesome . . . And the game freakin' RULES!!!

Donnie Darko is one of the most underrated movies of all time.

I just skimmed the IMDB entry for it, and I might have to check it out on my next Daddy's Day Off. I like the Gyllenhaals, and what I've read makes it look pretty interesting.

My buddy made sure to let me know the other day that I sucked balls and that he had recently purchased Gears of War. I haven't had a chance to stop by and try it out...but I'm sure when I do I'll be wasting a good portion of my days playing it.
