This is just my guess, but it had a good opening weekend but got bashed pretty bad in the press. I know of three people who saw it and they said, "Boring...tooooooooo much talk".
It's of course, controversial, so that'll get people to see it. But I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, you'll see the magic -50% dropoff next week for it at the box office, esp with X Men
What is everyone else's predictions

From the reviews... I'm guessing a drop off as well for The Da Vinci Code. X3 is going to make big bucks and will most likely be #1 for a couple weeks at least. Personally I will wait for Da Vinci Code to hit DVD. I LOVE the book, however, hollywood usually butchers the movie versions. I cant see myself plunking down that much money to go see it in the theatre and end up disappointed. Eve is much worse than I am in critique books to movies... we rented "Memoirs of a Geisha" when it hit DVD... it took 3 something hours to watch a 90 min film because after each butchered scene she'd pause it and go on a tirade... I've never read the book, but she has like 11 times and she would explain how things were supposed to go in the book LOL

People have to remember that books that become movies will always be different. Always.
In a book you can take a page and do a short history, but in cinema, that might take 1/2 hr and cost a lot.
Movies will never have the full story like the book, because the movie would be 8 hrs. long and some stuff doesn't translate well to the screen.
I also don't get the controversy over this movie. There have been several movies/books on this subject of Jesus having a wife and such. Nobody ever made a stink about it before but, for some reason, people are freaking out about this movie.
It's funny that the more people make a big deal out of something they think should not be seen or read, all that does is stir up publicity and inevitably, it makes a lot of money and many will go see it just to find out what all the fuss is about. Makes me laugh.

People will always create controversy over something that hits the mainstream that touches on politics or religion.
I was excited to see the movie when I heard it was being made, because I really enjoyed the book (although as far as Dan Brown novels, I enjoyed Angels and Demons more). However, I think that Tom Hanks was a bad casting choice for the part of Robert Langdon, and heard there was so mauch of the movie that was just talking and figuring out codes, and quickly lost interest in seeing it. I might still see it in the theatre, but will probably now wait for DVD.
X-men will be the big picture this weekend (I hope to see that this weekend myself), but with it being a holiday I think DiVinci code will not drop off too much, maybe to the $40's domestically (down from $77 mil or so this weekend). However, after that it will go downhill quickly. It had alot of potential, but I think fell flat and will suffer in the box office from bad word of mouth.

Angels & Demons is much better, and would have made for a great movie...but it didn't sell a billion copies lol.
I will see the movie, because I did enjoy the book for what it was ...a solid thriller filled with lots of "historical" bunk.

Angels and Demons was a MUCH better read... and I ditto the comments on the seeing the movie...Since i had been to many of the places the book used as locations, i could see what was happening and thought that i movie had to be made, if for nothing else to get those places on the big screen. Controversy will always be around...how else can something sell? At the center of all good sales, is some CONTROVERSY.

There are rumors going around that Brian Grazer (is that how you spell his last name?), who is Ron Howard's partner, is getting people to protest outside of theaters to drum up controversy.
Sounds like a 1960s movie horror scheme to me!

I saw it tonight, and I enjoyed it. I had read the book though, so I think I was sort of prepared for what it was (lots of talking. Lots and lots of talking).
The acting was decent, but I'm going to agree with those who said that Tom Hanks seems miscast. I don't quite know why...I love Tom hanks...Robert Langdon seems like the kind of character he could pull off...but it never quite works. That is probably my biggest gripe with the whole movie.
Some things are a little different than the book, especially toward the end, but they all make sense from a movie making point of view (IE things that work in book form dont always work as well visually, and vice versa).
Overall i'd give it a 6/10. Good, solid, I liked it, but not quite as good as the book.

According to CNN and Sony Pictures, Angels and Demons is in the early stages of pre-production. Sony wanted to wait for returns on The Da Vinci Code before going forward with the second movie.

I never read the book, but I did just see the movie and I thought it was a solid movie. Not reading the book might hinder my thoughts on the casting of Hanks, I thought he did a good job in his role. I liked the talking and concept of the characters figuring out the clues, some boring movies are not boring to others... in the end I really liked this movie!

My wife and I saw Davinci yesterday. She has read the book, I have not. We both thought it was just an OK movie. Not bad, but not great either.
For me, it was too long. The "code-breaking'" really only held my interest for about 90 minutes. After that, I became bored with it and was waiting for them to finally figure it all out.
Plus, about halfway through the movie, I realized that the characters were running for their life, but I didn't care if they lived or died. I had no attachment to the characters, which is unusual because Tom Hanks usually always creates likable characters. So for me, a little less "code-breaking" and a little more character development would have made for a better movie.

cakejedi, you are right on the money. I saw it with my fiance and a friend and they had both read it and I had not. All of us thought it was an ok movie but that was about it. And now that you mention it I really could have cared less about any of the characters. In fact I found the monk to be the most interesting character of all. Apparently some stuff was changed from the book that didn't really need to be changed but since I have not read it I wouldn't know.

When you do not care about a Tom Hanks characters, who is probably one of America's most liked actors, you know there is something wrong with the screenplay!!!!
