Just read in the paper today that there will be a special release of the first three Stars Wars movies on DVD this September. They will include both the original theatrical release and the revised versions George Lucas made some years ago.
I have been waiting for the originals for some time, as the re-makes were crap in a fancy digital wrapper. Sorry to be negative - but Han Solo shot Greedo first. It's a fact. Live with it.

Interesting...I thought Lucas would be far too arrogant to release them again in the original form...but I'd rather watch them that way any day!

You know, aside from the Greedo shooting first thing, which totally killed the Han Solo character, the computer generated effects were nice additions.
But greedo shooting first was wrong- almost as bad as Jar Jar wrong.

I suppose the only thing bigger than Lucas' ego is his bank account. I remember someone once said that he could puke in a can and call it "Jedi Juice" and make a million dollars, Hey, if ya got it like that...

Actually, per the article I read, it was the sheer number of fan requests coming to the Fox Distributors. So many people asked for them that the studio made the decision to double them up. So the fans of both are happy, and Lucas' ego remains unbattered.
I do not like George Lucas for re-making his movies. I am kind of a purist, and outside of perhaps some picture and sound enhancements to an original print, I do not like either making a re-make of a movie, or worse, adding new footage and effects to an existing movie. That's not filmmaking - that's a mash up.

He said he'll buy anything Star Wars. I admit I'm a nerd...but my wife would kill me if I took things too far And love that South Park episode when Speilberg and Lucas tried to re make Raiders....classic

I thought they did release the originals already without the computerized upgrades.
I know I have them on VHS right before the DVD boom hit, so maybe that's what I'm thinking of.

Yeah, you are right Gatekeeper, they did release them on VHS, but not DVD.

I probably won't get them since I have an original DVD set where Han does shoot first, plus the revised VHS set, and recently the revised DVD set. Good I dea though; I'm glad they're releasing a set so you can decide for yourself.
Take care,
Jay

But greedo shooting first was wrong- almost as bad as Jar Jar wrong. I stil maintain that the casting of Anakin Skywalker (any of them, really) did far more damage than Jar Jar Binks could have hoped to...=P Look! He's Vader! Just whiny with wooden acting! A CGI puppet could have displayed more emotion... ...wait...it DID!

I will purchase the new DVDs for pure nostalgia-to have Star Wars as it was when I first saw it as a six year old. But I will watch the new versions more than the originals. This may be blasphemy to some Star Wars fans, but to me the changes have made the movies better. Plus, it has been fun to watch my favorites movies grow and change as I have grown and changed.

Some of the changes are good...some suck. Greedo shooting first is bad, if for other reason than because of how choppy it was edited.
I did like the addition of Jabba into episode four, even though he looks like he shrank from his appearance in the prequels and then ballooned again in Ep. 6. Maybe he's just Oprah, I dunno.
Editing Hayden Christensen into the Ep. 6 final scene was also rather silly, IMHO. But lots of the other little CGI touches, especially background additions and the like, are pretty cool.

Yeah... that one I don't really care for. Even my son questioned that, asked me why Anakin is young if Obi-Won was old. I made up some story about it showing Anakin as a good guy. You know things are bad when a six year old is seeing holes in the ending!

I am a big Star Wars fan, but I don't think I'll be getting these DVDs. It's just too much Star Wars floating around. I mean, I bought the original VHS, plus the Special Edition ones, plus the prequels on DVD, plus the recent DVD release of the original movies with the changes. Where does it end? Granted, Hayden being in ROTJ's final sequence was mind-boggling, and the Greedo thing has irked me for a long time, but why do they keep releasing more and more copies/versions of the movies. It's very frustrating. I'm sure that sometime soon they'll release all 6 movies on DVD in a boxed set with even more features that they didn't offer before. I love Star Wars, but sometimes enough is too much, IMO.

Very simple: because people will buy it, and LucasFilm will make money. Gotta love the profit motive!
