Hey guys Im bored so I thought I would drop a review here just to see what people think and to give people who are bored something to read ...
John Williams
Star Wars - Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Soundtrack Review
Yes, this officially doesn't come out for a week or so but I was able to get my hands on this a week ago and have been listening to it for some time. First off I have all the soundtracks to the series and have to say this one feels totally different then the others, though if I had to compare it sounds most like Empire. It is very operatic with a lot more choral.
TRACK #1 - Main Title & Approaching the Battle
- Decent track, very fast paced at points, I love a lot of the choices Williams makes to build tension.
Track #2 - Anakin's Dream
- Ok track, not my favorite, very dark and moody piece
Track #3 - Battle of Heroes
- The dual of the fates, the imperial march, the binary sunset of the score ... its choral chorus is used throughout the track ... I highly reccommend the music video if you can find it. Awesome track the more I listen to it.
Track #4 - Anakins Betrayal
- Again using a chorus as the main part to the score, mixed with the original star wars theme in parts builds slowly to a sad version of battle of heroes at the end.
Track #5 - General Grievous
- A great track, very fast beat with a predator like feel (similiar to Jaws, but much more quicker and metallic sounding) .
Track #6 - Palpatines Teachings
- Gothic and dark I think choir, sounds like George Clinton's Mortal Kombat a little. Very sinister track then leads into the celebration track from phantom menace. Strange ending but it probably fits the movie,
Track #7 - Grievous and the droids
- Similiar to track 5, seems more like fighting music.
Track #8 - Padme's Ruminations
- Another un-star wars esque track, uses strange vocals mixed with the star wars theme. Seems almost dreamlike
Track #9 - Anakin vs Obi Wan
- The track to buy the soundtrack for, begins with the battle of heroes and mixes in a lot of cues from Williams Empire Soundtrack. A lot from Vader/Skywalker duel on bespin, the imperial march and the escape from cloud city track. The track brings us back to a faster pace beat and a faster battle of heroes track.
Track #!0 - Anakins Dark Deeds
- I think the soundtrack is out of order, cause this track slows it down. Then out of nowhere very loud and dark chorus slowly building down to another sad version of battle of heroes.
Track #11 - Enter Lord Vader
Not what I expected, a bit slow but then in the end I do notice a little bit of duel of fates ... the track needs some of the imperial march though I think
Track #12 - The Immolation Scene
Another dark and depressing track
Track #13 - Grievous Speaks to Lord Sidious
Has a nice marching beat to it leading to the same choral in anakins dark deeds.
Track #14 - Birth of the Twins
- A score stealer here. Starting off very nicely with instruments building up to a very familiar theme. Williams makes awesome use of my favorite track from the Phantom Menace, funeral for Qui Gonn here, using again chorus to highlight the track.. One of my favorite and sad scores
Track #15 - A New Hope and end credits
- Williams ends the movie and score again with more mixing of classic scores from the original trilogy leading to the most memorable ... binary sunset (the one where Luke in ANH looks out at the double sunset),. This leads of course to the finale and credits score from all the other films.
The Top five tracks on the CD
1 - Anakin vs Obi Wan
2 - Birth of the Twins
3 - Battle of Heroes
4 - General Grievous
5 - Palpatines Teaching
OVERALL REVIEW - This score is really not what I expected, Williams uses a lot of vocals in this. I love the connections to the other films he uses and I am glad he uses a lot of tracks I loved from other films. This score has a very dark and sad feel to it, hence the reminder to the Empire score. If you didn't guess already I love scores and star wars. I was a little dissappointed in the second pre-quel but that score was just a little better. But this movie could really steal the franchise and be the best movie out of the three.
If Lucas blows this somehow, I may cry ... I already stood 2 hours in line for my tickets ...
GRADE - B+, if a Star Wars fan you should already have this like I do LOL
