My wife came home today and said she heard a rumor that Topher Grace is playing Venom. Now she knows Spidey and the cast of the movie, but I don't think knows Venom. I don't know why she would even make that up.
Has anyone else heard this? My God, I hope not. I've thought Marvel did a decent job of casting so far for their movies (even though Kirsten Dunst is kinda ugly and a plain Jane for Mary Jane, who should've been played by that hot piece Nikki Cox)
Personally, I'd rather see Vin Diesel play Venom than some skinny little 135 soaking wet. I like Topher, but not as Venom. Keep your fingers crossed.

Topher is going to be in the movie, I hope not as Venom, and I hope they do not use Venom just yet.
Too many classic characters i'd rather see.

Topher Grace would be horrible as Venom. Batista should be Venom. Actually one villain that I would like to see that has even been hinted at in the movies is Lizard. Rhino would also be a good villain. I always thought that it would be cool for the movie to start with a big battle between Spidey and Rhino and then after Rhino is in jail you get to the meat of the movie. It would be a good way to be able to see a couple of Spidey villains in a movie.

As I said, I would prefer to see Mysterio, Lizard, Kraven, ELECTRO(!!!), Shocker, Scorpion, Tarantula, Hobby, Sandman (he is supposed to be in) Rhino and a slew of other before Venom.

My guess is that he'll be Electro...BUT I could see how he could play Venom. They could play off the whole 'two sides of the coin' idea, where you have Peter Parker and Topher Grace's character both skinny, nerdy newsguys, but one is Spiderman and the other is Venom. Venom is essentially Spiderman without a concious or a good heart (the alien has a lot to do with that...but Spidey still decided to rid himself of the suit depite the immense power it gave him.
Having said that, doesn't Spiderman bring back the Venom 'entity' from outerspace? So you'd have to get Spiderman into space...unless they want to change 'what' the Venom suit is...or how it was found (meteor lands, the news goes to 'cover the story', and Peter Parker stumbles on this black ooze...but Topher see's him and wants the credit himself, not realizing 'what' it is.)
However, because of his sense of humour, I would be very surprised if he's Venom...as Electro would make more sense...maybe Lizard or Mysterio.
I think Thomas Hayden Church is going to be Scorpion...and they will set up the whole Venom storyline for Spiderman IV

I kind of doubt that he will be Lizard because he was already in the second movie as doctor connors ( that was his name right). I heard that Thomas Hayden Church will probably be Sandman.
Secondly I think that you are wrong about Venom, Floyd. You said that he doesn't have a conscience, well I beg to disagree. Venom always believes that he is doing the right thing. He just thinks that Spidey is too weak to get the job done. That is why they have teamed up on numerous occasions.

Maybe he'll be playing Carnage or Cletus Cassidy instead, that fits in better with a 135 pounder. It's easy enough to make the Venom symbiote into a biological weapon experiment of some kind.

pikemojo...your right, I forgot about the Dr. that becomes Lizard being in on of the other movies. I also now remember hearing THC might play Sandman...I just thought THC would make a good Scorpion too... As for Venom...I'm not a huge Spiderman fan (I'm more a Batman/D.C. guy) so I don't really know much about Venom other than the story behind the alien suit and the fact that he was a rival of Peter Parkers at the newspaper (I have the 4 or 5 comics that made up the creation of Venom, but nothing since)...so if he's teamed up with Spiderman since (very cool) and is a bit more of a 'tweener', then my mistake...I don't want to offend any Spiderman fan's with my lack of knowledge...

Actually, Spidey brings the Venom suit back from the original secret wars and I am torn with the addition of Venom...they would have to explain how he came to be and if they add Carnage then it will just confuse the 'non-believers'...i think they should do hobbey or the lizard since they have set this up....that's my two cents!

I would really love to see venom on the big screen, but I don't know if the series is quite ready for the cosmic storyline this would have to entail. Although seeing the "secret wars" brought to life on the big screen would be AWESOME. Imagine the cast they would have to assemble for that.. Roughly 3/4's of the marvel universe in one movie. Wow.
I think the Sandman would be a better fit for the series right now. The Spider Man movies seem like they are science heavy, and his condition could easily be explained. I'm thinking the addition of H.Y.D.R.A. as his origin? Maybe Spidey could have his first official on screen team up? Captain America? Silver Sable? Throw in the Black Cat for a little bit of a love triangle, Might have a winner there.

No no no NO PEOPLE!! No stupid Venom. Raimi has a nice thing going, giving each movie villian some credibility while building up for the eventual former best friend show down.
To be done proprerly, Venom needs to be his own three movie arc. Start off building the tension between Brock and Parker, and have Petey find the suit and loving it while he smashes say The Shocker or some other Spider villian. Petey win, loves his new black digs, Brock gets fired Movie one is done.
Movie two has Petey finding things are not going well with the new suit- he is not acting like himself. In this movie the antagonist can be the Rhino or Electro or somebody. He finally determines why he is not himself, ditches the symbiote and returns to the Red and Blue. Spidey trounces the baddie. Oh Yeah, Brock and the Symbiote find each other and fall in love - to kill Petey. End Movie two.
Here is the payoff: Three starts off with Petey happy as a cat in the sun beating up say the Vulture. Out of nowhere, comes Venom. They fight and we enjoy the 194 minute physical, mental and emotional brawl between the two. Spidey wins by using the large bell to K.O. the symbiote.
Venom is a big enemy of Spider lore, but I feel a slow build up is better to work with him. I mean would it have had as much as an impact if Darth Vader announced in ANH that he was Luke's Father, as opposed to two whole movies of proving he is a most vile, hated and malignant figure who has nothing is common with our hero for alomost 4 whole hours?
The Payoff whould not have been as good,.

While I agree that Raimi probably won't just drop Venom into the story, the "alien symbiote" aspect of it could easily be covered. Remember that Jameson's son (the guy MJ almost married) is an astronaut; the old "we found this in space and aren't sure what it is; hey, Eddie, take a picture" hack could be employed easily.

heres the deal.... they are RUMORED to be shooting 3 and 4 together....if Hayden Church is going to be sandman (and that is a STRONG rumor) It makes sence to me that topher would be hydroman and this will keep a little of the continuity together. Tophers movie and tv projects lend zip to action, so it will be a surprise no matter what role he lands.

Actually, they can't use JJ's son because he actually becomes Moon Wolf or something like that....he is affected by the moon somehow...it has been a longtime since I read anything with him.

But they could still have the symboite attached to his ship or something. They don't need to resort to the whole Secret Wars nonsense.

In Ultimate spiderman, the venom symbiote was created in a lab by peters pops... everyone and their brother has access to high tech labs in the movies.... its not outside the realm of possibility because the movies dont adhear 100% to continuity...

They did something similar with the Hulk though right? Be better to just have it attached to Jameson's ship I think.
