I've played Risk a lot. I never really liked it compared to Axis and Allies, but I must say some of the variants are amazing. I've tried Godswar and the LoTR versions and each one was incredible fun.
Godswar incorporated the use of Gods and the Underworld, as well as power/miracle cards that really affected the game. LoTR had the Ring traveling to Mordor and things happening based on the book's events...the player in the best position when the ring arrived was the winner. I'd recommend either of these versions to anyone (but it seems the LoTR was a limited run..can't find it anywhere in AB; Calgary, Red Deer or Edmonton game shops).
I've seen some other variants out there (like Star Wars), anybody have any experience with other variants? For the price, I'd be interested to know the gimmick behind the game before buying it.

I have Risk GodStorm...it is flat out awesome...blows risk and axis and allies away I think. With the fighting on the main board of the 5 armies including their gods and then the fight in the underworld...just too much fun.
The clincher is the cards...unlike the other two this one throws twists at you like no other...one move you could have all your troops on Atlantis, the next your neibouring army has drawn a card that sinks atlantis.
2210...is that the futuristic Risk...same as GodStorm but on earth then they fight on the moon after earth?

ya get it forsure...it truly is one of those games where they really figured it out...has the 5 turns somewhat like an axis and allies turn max thing, unless you draw the card that allows you to turn back a round...lol...

Risk Godstorm is GREAT especially if you are into fantasy themes.
The sinking of Atlantis can make or break the game...and reviving troops from the underworld makes for interesting stragety...
Werner...if you like Age of Mythology, you'll like Risk Godstorm. I have to watch my play of AoM because time will fly by and i will get in trouble for playing it too much...

Whoops, my bad GodStorm not GodsWar. A friend had picked it up and brought it over, we got a couple more guys and played probably 4 or 5 different games (which is nice..games don't last forever unlike Axis and Allies). The underworld seemed more like an afterthought to me though, it was pretty neat, but almost pointless compared to the detail of the rest of the game. This weekend I noticed a Transformers variant. Didn't look worth the time to open the box though.

I think I see an opportunity for CoTG. That's right, aCe Risk. Get on that Osk. LOL Not even kidding, I would pay any amount of money to play that. I've never played aCe before, but I've always thought it looked cool. I would immediately buy and play that game. Any game even close to that set up I would be on like white on rice. unless it's pork fried.

LOL As I'm reading all the replies here and scrolling down the page, the idea is bubbling in my brain...then I see this. I've gotta look into this. Played the original Risk tons of times growing up, not for a while though...a variant version however I've never had the chance. Let me sniff around and see what I find. Thanks for bringing this up! ~ :-Xsk

I love the direction this thread is taking! In fact, a COTG themed Risk is something I had thought of a few years ago. Instead of a map of Earth, it's a map of the galaxy. And the possible armies would include Earth, CTA-102, Cygnus, Titan, Andromeda, Brymstone, and of course the Gladiators. How sweet would it be to play out the Gladiators quest to raid, pillage and conquer the galaxy!?

If there is EVER a GWF or aCe Risk i am IN!
Tournament MAster will need to put a GWF Risk Tournament into the schedule at G-Con...right along side the the regular GWF tournaments!
Do you know how awesone this would be!

A variant could be made up specifically for the cons but would people want to take time away from playing cotg itself?

I'm not sure exactly how aCe works, as I have never played it or read any of the books, but when I was thinking of an aCe Risk varian, what came to mind was using the wrestlers as the armies you would usually have in a Risk game. Moving the wrestlers into different territories on the map for control, and having the opposing army move their own wrestlers in. Then a card would be made up, the matches fought, and the results of the card would determine the fate of the territory in question. That way, you could play risk, and at the same time play Champions of the Galaxy. Now, as for that working with the GWF, I don't know.
Once again, I know next to nothing about aCe, so I don't know if that would even be possible. But playing out fight cards in order to determine the fate of people and property gets me very intigued. But that might just be me.
