The Tokyo Game Show is currently in progress, running from the 20th to the 23rd. The Japanese game magazine Famitsu reported in their latest issue that Square Enix is expected to announce a remake of Final Fantasy VII at some point during the show.
If this pans out, I could not be any more excited. Final Fantasy VII in full HD with voice-overs for the entire game? Sign me up, please.

With a total orchestrated soundtrack instead of midi files FTW.
Don't see it happening, but hey you never know. Just have to wait for Crisis Core.

Don't see it happening, but hey you never know. Just have to wait for Crisis Core. Spoiler warining - HIghlight to read: Supposedly, the end of Crisis Core says "To be continued in Final Fantasy VII" ... an odd thing to say about a decade-old game.Make what you will of that.

I doubt it would sell a ton of PS3s....unless they do some sort of significant change, it will be purchased by the curious and some people who didn't play the original FFVII

I think that FFVII on PS3, even without significant changes other than updating it to modern technology, would be like giving Sony a license to print money. And that's assuming they don't add in what was originally cut from the game, maybe a couple more weapons to fight, that sort of thing.

Crap. Nothing of the sort came out of the last day of the TGS, so this rumor remains just that. BDS is sad.

Also its not a spoiler for Crisis Core to lead into VII. They've always said it's the prequel to FF VII.
Hence you play as and with characters who are in VII.
Also Square has reissued 1-6 on different platforms so I totally see VII-IX coming out as a package for PS3 in the future I just don't see them doing anything to it.

I just think it's odd to put that little blurb in there for a decade-old game, that's all. Especially since video games are primarily marketed today at younger people who likely never played FFVII. Meh, it's probably just my wishful thinking reading things that aren't actually there.
If they're not going to tweak them, then they need to hurry up and release them as downloads on the PSN. It couldn't take too long to get everything converted over for that, I wouldn't think.

I take it that means PS 1 games can't be played on a PS 3 then?

You can't even play all PS2 games on a PS3 IIRC.

I take it that means PS 1 games can't be played on a PS 3 then? Untrue! My PS1 games work just fine on the PS3. I just want them to release it in a downloadable format like they're slowly doing with other titles in the PS1 library. You can't even play all PS2 games on a PS3 IIRC. Mostly untrue. On the new 80 GB models of the PS3, there's a very limited selection of software that doesn't work right because it doesn't have the Emotion Engine chip in it. So on that particular model, there's only like 90% backwards compatibility. On the other models, though, pretty much the entire PS2 library works just fine.
