I was surfing the web and happened upon a website for a table top wrestling game called Superstars Wrestling,( not to be confused with Superstars pro wrestling). Apparently the game has been around since the mid 70's and has a massive collection of real life wrestlers available, includng current WWE and TNA talent. I was just wondering how this is possible considering Tom isn't able to sign current WWE/TNA talent to the LoW because Vince owns the rights. Here's a link to the site. home.earthlink.net/~harwoodm2/index.htmlThey just happen to be located in Howell MI.

This guy doesn't try and get permission for any names he uses. Just puts them on there. I can't remember if some (or all) of the cards -- or maybe bigger names -- have the name altered slightly so you know who it is but doesn't say that name exactly.

Coincidently, I responded to a post about this game early this morning on another discussion board. Small world. I personally bought the boxed set and a few supplemental editions off of this guy on ebay two years ago. The game is "copyright" 1978, which is funny considering he's stealing the names of the wrestlers he uses. Somehow he's managed to slip under the radar for nearly 30 years with this. Unlike the earlier editions of the Superstar PRO Wrestling game it is often confused with, this game makes no alterations to the wrestlers names to try to give the appearance of being in compliance with copyright and/or trademark laws. The funny thing is, when I bought the game he included a flier for ordering TNA PPV tapes from him directly because "the babysitters on ebay" won't let him sell his pirated tapes anymore. Apparently this guy's been making a profit off of other people's names, likenesses, and hard work for so long now that he can't imagine why they would want to protect their properties from guys like him. It is funny that he's in Howell. I know people who live there and, trust me, nothing good ever came out of Howell, Michigan. Ah hell, they'll know I'm just playing. They just wake up every morning and thank God they're not in Taylor.

Yeah, everybody in south eastern MI makes fun of Taylor. They're like the red headed step child of downriver.

I ordered from an ad in PWI back in '87 and loved it. not much as I do COTG now but nostalgic I don't believe they produce the game anymore, But I am more than positive that you can find it on ebay for sale. Also, I remember several years back that I was able to down load the rules and several editions of Superstars Pro Wrestling for free off the net. I don't remember where I got them from, but if I can relocate the place where I got the free material, I'll send you an URL.

Interesting Mark. So, how does the game play? Is it any good or just a complete waste of money? The game is pretty simplistic. At the top of the card is the wreslter's name and vital stats, his signature hold, and a PER rating, which is the amount of damage he can take. The playing portion of the card has 11 offensive moves, 11 defensive results, and a pin chart. Each offensive move is followed by a number, which is essentially the damage the move will inflict if successful. If a wrestler keeps the advantage for 3 consecutive turns, he can go for his finisher. Matches tend to be really awkward and it's way too easy for a match to end on a disqualification or countout out of the blue. There are also a lot of 3-5 move matches, so the game does play fast. The rulebook has a copyright date of 1975, btw. The game box is copyright 1978, which is what made me think the game was only 29 years old when, in fact, it has been around for well over 30 years now. The game manual, and all the early cards, were done on a typewriter and have never been updated, so the game has a very dated, amatuer look. The bottom line is, it's fun for nostalgia to see cards of all the old-timers that the Legends game will either never get or just not want. There are some obscure ones in here, in addition to all the stars of the time. It's more like a time capsule than a serious wrestling game to me, though. A look back to what the bootleg game makers were doing before computers and the internet.

Thanks for the info Mark.

I have both the Superstar Pro Wrestling Game from the 80s, which I wore out and the Harwood Game. The Superstar Pro Wrestling Game was the one advertised in the Apter mags and they had plenty of sets that covered a lot of stars. Right around 86' they have to remove the names due to copyright issues. Before that the 85' edition had alterations like "Terry the Tailor" and "Brag Armstrong". The game was getting popular and I think making some money. Harwood's game is ok but has a more homemade feel to it and I'd be surprised if he was making much money off of it.
Those interested in the Superstar Pro Wrestling Game. There are several Yahoo sites that do sim gaming using a computer version of the game. The game was developed by a programmer who has it listed for free on the net. It's fun because you can create your own cards very easily and run matches.
