I just got Age of Empires : The Age of Kings for the DS and man what a awesome game! I use to play these type of games both on a PC and Board Games, this AoE has me glued! I haven't won a war yet, but I getting the hang of it though. I'll try the campaigns once I really have the hang of the game. This is a must have for Turned-Based Strategy System Fans!

I read about this game on other systems, and it sounds awesome. Why couldn't they create it for the GBA (I have no $ for a DS right now)?
Take care,
Jay

AoE was a PC game originally.. they've since made a sequel called "age of Mythology" that incorporates Greek/Norse Gods and such (only played it once, so I don't know the details) AoE: age of Kings is kinda old (the PC version) so even if you don't have that great of a computer it'll probably work for you.
There a newer version called Empire Earth that was out about a year ago, too, if you have a good 'puter

I got into the series when Age of Empires 2 (Age of Kings) was released. Played it faithfully along with the expansion pack (The Conquerors I think). AOE went 3-D with Age of Mythology and it's expansion (which I can't remember the name of). They had the Greek, Norse, and Egyptian myths in it and added a fourth for the expansion, Atlanteans. The battles weren't as huge in this game because of the cost of the myth units but the god system and the myth units and heroes made it fun (god powers were pretty cool, everything from raising a small army of mummies to wrath of god meteor showers). AOE3 came out last year I think and it's more about the colonies, frontier, and exploration. I think they have an expansion coming out that'll deal more with Native American tribes. I loved playing all of these games.
Now, the DS version, you said it was turn based? All the others I mentioned are in real time (can't speak for the first game though). If the DS version is turned based I think I'd have to pass on it if I had a DS. Also, Empire Earth isn't part of the series if I remember right (Ringsyde would know, I'm sure).

I still play AOE II from time to time, although I like the expansion version where you can play as Incas and Mayans and the sheep in Central America turn into turkeys. Plus, you can garrison battering rams with soldiers to make them stronger.
And then there are the Huns, who get the maximum population limit without having to build houses because their thing has always been just running over their enemies. Much more fun, IMO.
Isn't there an AOE III out right now where the European Nations of the 1800s go out and try to colonize the rest of the world?

Do you have a lot of freedom to do what you want, like in the Civilization games, or are you confined to linear storylines. I might look into this and a DS for Christmas.
Take care,
