Hi all,
I've been reading about WW II, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good games based on it, either video ,war, or board. Preferably not computer (they don't work on my comp) or first person shooters; I've been looking for games that simulate the battles and some of the events of the war.
Thanks,
Jay

There are several actually: In the video game market, there are Allied General, Panzer general, Call of Duty, the Medal of Honor series, and Commandos (hard though...pisses me off at times)...in boardgames, Axis & Allies have several that I have played and enjoyed...then there are several Battlefield games that simulate battles from history that use lil' diecut pieces...hope this helps.

Axis and Allies is the classic.. Its a force-level game (meaning you're either the Germans, Americans, British, etc) similar to Risk in gameplay, with the exception of there being different types of units that cost different resources. If you're into mini, they just started coming out with a minitures game under the Axis and Allies brand, seems like it could be really good, but I can't afford buying such things... If you're looking for a more battlefield- oriented strategy, I'd recommend Memoir '44. Its a fun yet fairly simple game which replay a particular battle. You can check it out at the game companies web site, www.daysofwonder.com. He has many elements of the hex-based games that are out there, but is less complicated and can be set up and played in and hour to 90 minutes. (don't actually buy it there though, you can get it cheap through either www.funagain.com or If you're looking for a hardcore hex-based game were you move each unit and there are 87000 different types, I'd recommend you check out www.boardgamegeek.com.. its the definitive datebase of all things boardgame, it usually has pics and reviews of every game, well, ever. That should cover it

Okay thanks. I'm looking mostly into strategy games so Axis and Allies and Memoir '44 sound the best. I don't think the PS2 has any strategy war games except Civilization 2, and all the countries and set-ups are at random.
Can either AnA or Memoir be played solo? Just wonder since they are times at night I'm bored and no one's around, I can just set the game up and play.
Thanks again and take care,
Jay

You could sorta play M '44 solo, but It might take some set up ( I think there's some discussion about it on the DoW board)
Btw, if you're looking for computer stuff, Civ is THE BEST. you can start Civ II on a map of Earth (with the civs starting where they belong) and a variety of variations (just Europe just North America, etc) I'm not sure how bad they hacked the game if you have a console version though.
Now, if you really want the true civ experience, you want civ IV... its a very good revision of the basic system... although it does have some pretty high tech requirements.
Axis and Allies has a computer verison as well, called the "Iron Blitz" edition. Its decent (and has some interesting scenario variations) but the computer AI is pretty medicore.
If Home of the Underdogs is back up, you can find it there for free, or if you shoot me a PM with you're e-mail I'll check when I'm home from work to see if I have the zip file still.

Thanks but I must have mistyped it. I'm looking for just about anything But computer games because, as good as they are, my computer's always missing something needed to run them, whether a memory, sound card, video card, etc. Otherwise, I'd definitely go for a Civ game.
Thanks for the offer though.
Take care,
Jay

Just thought I'd throw Brothers in Arms out there even though its a video game. It's a shooter/squad based game but it's pretty accurate stuff I think. I've seen war documentaries that actually use the gameplay and cut scene footage in their programs.

Which WWII video games do you like the best? I don't mond a shooter, though I'd prefer one that isn't too linear. I hate having to do this, then go here. It's like following a script. I know most games now have a pattern, but if games exist with some choices, please let me know.
I have a PS2 and GBA so anything for those.
Thanks,
Take care,
Jay
