Really what is so great about it? I just never really "got" what Sims was about. It just seemed like you told someone what to wear and when to eat and go clean the bathroom, yada yada yada.

well...with #2.....they have added much more to the game
in the first one....you didn't die of "old age"....now, your sim(s) will actually age (can go from newborn -> toddler -> teenager -> adult -> elder).....so, you only have a limited amount of time to acheive things....plus, you can actaully watch your family grow from just a single guy (or girl)...and on through the generations.
To me, that is the main difference....
Also, in the first one, the Sims didn't really do much on their own....you had to tell them every time to go to the bathroom....but in this one...they do many things on their own....
There are now "fears" and "Wants"....and Aspirations.....
There are some folks (the gone gold forums) that just never really got into the first one, but are really digging the 2nd one (as am I...just couldn't get into the first one).....
My current sims:
I created two (one male and one female)....the male is based off a guy from work (i created him to torture him....just a funny thing with a friend at work....it has really gotten him interested in the game since "he" is in it)....The girl is just nobody in particular....but she is a hot red-head (lol).....
The guys name is Nathan, and the chics name is Lani....
I was working on getting them married...then Lani caught Nathan cheating with the Maid....they worked things out again....got back in the groove....and Lani then accepted an engagement ring from Nathan.....wooo hooo!!!!! Well...wedding party scheduled....i made the mistake of inviting The Maid....and all hell broke loose between Nathan, Lani and Ailyanna (The Maid).....Lani & Nathan ended up breaking the engagement off....and really didn't like each other for awhile....
Nathan then started to pursue Ailyanna....he has patched up his friendship with Lani....but he is got the HOTS for Ailyanna....she calls him at least once a day....then comes over....they spend time together, hugging and kissing....but twice now Nathan has proposed to her, and twice...she has shot him down!!!
Still working on getting Nathan hitched....he has the Family Aspiration....so he is now really wanting a wife and kids....really trying to get him married to this girl....but she is a tough one to crack.....
That is where the game is now....him and Lani are pretty good friends....they still think highly of each other....(in fact, their greatest fears are that the other will die).....
Just a very captivating game....and i really only bought it for my wife....yeah, right....at least that is what i keep telling myself!!

Doesn't really sound like my thing, I'll just stick with Burnout 3 for now then.
