So I've been messin with expanding on the cut rule in POW matches. They can play a big part in real matches so I thought I'd try and work them in with my timing and scoring rules. I have a pretty solid system (will post the chart) but want to know what effect do you think cuts/wounds should cause. Here are some options and my thoughts....
-3 severities of cuts/injuries: Minor, Medium, Severe -On a roll of doubles on a KO/SUB roll roll on the cut chart -1-2 = Minor Cut. Offensive fighter gets 1 extra point. - 3-4= Medium Cut. Offensive Figher gets 2 extra points. - 5-6 = Major Cut. Offensive Fighter gets 2 extra points and the Defensive Fighter adds an additional token to his KO/SUB.
I had contemplated on having a cut/wound location chart. That way a several well placed blows could have an accumulative effect. Though cool in theory, I wasnt sure if it would slow down the otherwise flowing gameplay of the match.
Any thoughts?

Great idea!
I might make it harder to get a major cut, so my roll would be like 1-3=minor cut, 4-5=medium cut, 6=major cut.
But that's very true about cuts affecting the outcomes of matches. I think I might try something like this out myself and see how often it alters the flow.

I forgot to alter the "6=Major Cut" but you get the idea. The first chart just helps with the KO, TKO,and cut rules. The second chart shows the cut outcomes (athstetic and point results).

Not that it needs my approval, but I endorse this chart whole-heartedly. A strong candidate for inclusion in MMA rulebook 2.0!

I second the motion- this is really cool and can add a good level of complexity to the system.

Had a question for Crippler about injuries resulting from the Cut Chart and he asked me to post here the idea I had about it. Anyway I just started using it and after a couple brutal fights that ended with the cut chart I thought it seemed natural that anyone receiving a cut should be injured even if for a short time and this is what I thought of.
d6 +1 card injury for Minor d6 +2 cards for Medium d6 +3 cards for Major
Now since that PM to Crippler I thought that if the match ends you use that chart but if you survive the cut to continue in the match you only receive the +1, 2 or 3 injury instead of also adding the d6 if the match ended on the cut chart. Also multiple cuts would be cumulative.
Hope this makes sense and any feedback is welcomed.

Here is my question though... Do you think fighters with cuts should take time off? Im trying to think if real fighters are injured out due to cuts. Or is it more from concussions and limb injuries (breaks, sprains, etc)?

My thoughts on this is that the medicine of the time will be advanced enough that cuts, even major ones, should be able to be healed at an advanced rate. So that fighters might not necessarily miss any time at all from a minor injury such as a cut. Broken bones & such should require no more than 6 weeks to heal, due again to the advanced nature of the healing medicines. Just my thoughts on it.

What I have been trying is 1d6 for an injury & add an additional d6 for a recurring injury to the same area. For example, on my last card Hydrax got K.T.F.O. by a reverse leg sweep (smashing his head into the mat = concussion) So I am tracking that injury so that if he gets TKO'd again with a concussion it will be a longer recovery. I am also not opposed to adding 2d6 injuries for very severe breaks/tears but I haven't found an instance in a fight yet that I felt deserved a 2d6 roll. I always think back to Gonzaga's KO of Cro Cop...the way that Cro Cop's leg bent back underneath him I was certain that he messed up his knee pretty bad with that one (even Rogan thought so in his commentary during the fight) but Cro Cop bounced right back & was fighting again in a few months...so I hesitate to put someone on the shelf for too long. I just think medicine will have advanced too much by 2122.

Cro Cop was out when he was hit- so there was no reisitance on the joint when he fell like that- he was unaware and was unable to do anthing to "correct" it.. Yes it looked sickening, but in reality, it provbably ended up being sore at the most.

So I used the cut chart last night and it was a really cool addition.
A few questions: 1. What happens to repeated cuts? Like do two minor cuts equal a medium cut? 2. is there any other impact on the match aside from points added? With a guy with a medium cut, for example, any submission attempts may not work as the blood will make limbs slicker. Repeated head trauma may cause a reduced abity to strike or defend . What do you think about situations like these?
MAye this is a little more complex than it needs to be?

What do you think about situations like these? MAye this is a little more complex than it needs to be? I actually was wondering about that when I made the chart up. As of now it is more for scoring purposes but I am open to having it effect the fighter's performance. In my old game "MOTC" I had a score sheet where you would check off where the wound occured. After like 5 marks (minor was 1 mark, medium was 2, severe was 3) the fight was stopped. I could come up with something similar but have the wounds have an effect on the stats. Though this does slow down the gameplay I do like the complexity of it. A fighter who lands a lottery punch on a superior striker can mount a comeback because of a cut (or whatever injury). If we can come up with an agreed effect of wounds I could come up with something fairly easily. Some questions on that note.... What ratings would be affected by the following: CUT (HEAD/EYE) LIMB STRAIN (ARM AND/OR LEG) BODY DAMAGE (RIB/S) HEAD TRAUMA NECK STRAIN Another thought is to keep it simple. You could just have the fighters lower or raise their offense and defense. (like the 40 pound weight advantage calls for).

This kind of thing can be as complex or simple as you want it to
This is what I am thinking:
first, two minor injuries equal a medium injury. Two medium injuries equal a major one. 2 major injuries and the match is over via ref stoppage.
with Minor injuries, no penalty. You can have a small cut, or take a painful bodyshot or be a bit fuzzy in the head after a slam and keep going . Plus with the ref stoppage to check on you, you have a recovery time. Also, instead of a minor injury, this action could instead be a low or illegal blow (blatant throat shot or hit to the back of the head), or falling through or being tied up in the ropes (like Pride)
Medium Injury: a cut will cause blood to flow, obviously, so like one defensive level, say strike, gets a a penalty of +1 However this will make submissions harder, so sub defense gets a -1 (limit at -3?)
If it is limb damage or a hard shot to the body, reduced effectiveness of using hips or inabilty to use a limb properly would result in say like - 1 strike offense, and +1 clinch defense
if it is from a slam perhaps a -1 grapple offense and +1 strike defense.
Serious Injury serious cuts effect strike offense and defense as the blood will probably be gushing into the eyes. +2 strike defense, -1 strike offense, and -2 grappling defense and -2 grappling offense.
serious limb damage or body shots could reults in 1 or 2 added to KO/SUB ratings. I have had a broken rib- it hurt like hell to breathe or laugh, let alone fight. Unable to walk right due to thigh kicks or use an arm due to a dead arm or broken hand. Also reduced defense ratings +1 on all three.
Serious slams are going to make you really fuzzy or knock the wind outta you, or you know, separate your shoulder (ha!). KO/SUB up 1 or 2, all defenses get a +1.
The blood/ cut effect culd be (and should probably be) applied to bith fighters, as it is both fighters that will be effected by the slickness.
What do you think?

One thing I did was change rules on the injury roll in a tournament format. I increased the chance for injury if the fighter was fighting another fight within 48 hours of the last if he got five or more blood tokens( from 2 to 2-3 on universal rolls). (My injury rolls were double ones on universal rolls/KO/Submit anlong with another chart to note the severity of the said injury or 8 to 12 blood tokens would all amount to 2d6 months out injury. Any injury over eight months with a bad severity roll was considered unrecoverable and the fighter couldn't pass the medical requirements to compete.)

I made the sweep rule to portray more realistic MMA ground fighting. I love the game so don't get me wrong. I just felt that defending fighters not only reverse too easily on level 3 Offense, but also get back to the clinch (hurt-2) or stand (dazed-1). IMO there should be more of a struggle. Getting off your back and back to the feet (or just sweeping for that matter) is no easy task. I made the following chart to reflect that aspect of the ground game.

Rules by: Cosmic Crippler Timing: -Every time an attack is resolved = a turn -1 turn = 15 seconds - 20 turns = 1 round (5 minutes) - Normal Match ( 3 rounds ) Championship ( 5 rounds) Scoring: -Successful Attack = +1 pts -Add 1 = 3pts -KO or Sub = 4pts -If a fighter wins by 1-19 points score the round 10-9 for the winner. -If a fighter wins by 20 or more points score the round 10-8 for the winner. CHART SCORING (STRIKE, CLINCH, GRAPPLING) Eliath brought up a great point about scoring the CHART outcomes. Here is how I do it for what it is worth.... STRIKE CHART (numbered top to bottom) (defending fighter = fighter rolling on the chart) 1) +4 defending fighter 2) +1 defending fighter 3) +1 to fighter with the higher strike rating or whom ever wins the roll.. 4) +1 offensive fighter 5) +3 offensive fighter CLINCH CHART 1) +1 defending fighter 2) +1 defending fighter 3) +1 to fighter with the higher rating or whom ever wins the roll. 4) No points 5) +3 offensive fighter GRAPPLING CHART 1) +4 defending fighter 2) +1 defending fighter 3) +1 to fighter with the higher rating or whom ever wins the roll. 4) No points 5) +4 offensive fighter Score card by: Eliath
