The Slave Side of Sunday by Anthony E. PriorThis guy spoke at the ISR (International Socialist Revue) convention in Chicago in early June of this year. So, Ferg's argument apparently has precedent in the more fringe groups of the left. I'm a baseball guy who follows football very lightly. Was Prior an All-Pro player? A solid player? A two year player? (Small side note: I give my highest recommendation to What's My Name, Fool? Sports and Resistance in the United States, which you see right under Prior's book. One of the better sports books I've read in the last five years.)

Although I copied and pasted an artcle that mentioned Jones has been arrested 6 times (5-6 is the number typcially mentioned in the press), I never personally claimed Pacman Jones got arrested 6 times. But I did say he lied about the number of times he's been arrested in that interview he gave on ESPN a few days ago. In that interview Jones said he has only been arrested 2 times but he has been arrested more than that: 1. July 13, 2005 2. February 6, 2006 3. August 25, 2006 4. October 26, 2006 sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2790090But since that article I cited was written, Pacman Jones was also charged with 2 felony counts here in Las Vegas in June of 2007 for the incident that occurred at the strip club here during the NBA's All Star game weekend.

He then said the fact that Vick was Black made the alleged crime all the more worse because the treatment of the dogs was comparable to the treatment of Blacks in The Invisible Man, in that they were made to fight one another for their master's entertainment. Needless to say, that guy lost me, too, by sounding like a complete fool. Ferg's comment about athletes being slaves is stupid, regardless if another idiot inspired the thought or simply beat him to the punch and said it first.

Thanks, Vegas. The two charges are probably what led the media to label it six arrests.

I agree 100% and I was offended and found the comment completely disrespectful to those who have expierenced the evils of slavery. I even made that clear at the end of my post somewhere up there.
I was just wondering what Prior's deal was since I know next to nothing about the guy other than hearing him on some late night college radio show once.

Anthony Prior was a cornerback who played for the Jets in the mid-90s. I remember his name, probably from college or the draft, but don't remember him doing anything in the league. His rookie year was '93, when I was still collecting sports cards, so that is probably why I remember his name.

First of all, I stay with in the bounds of what the state wants taught and I teach special education. I see bad things on the horizon for this government in the decisions they make. If I have gone over board I am sorry. I am only saying the Pacman Jones situation is only a symptom of more trouble down the road. Companies discriminating against smokers, drinkers and fat people. Companies barring any of their employees from anything considered dangerous, with wrestling, boxing and mma at the top of the sport.

You don't understand why a company would want to protect their multi-million dollar investment? That Titans have a lot invested in Jones, and want to make sure that after his suspension is up that he is in shape to play. There are plenty of ways for him to make money, many which don't involve him potentially hurting himself and his future football career.

I am just saying that they should not have a say off the field or out of the office. If I wanted to go to a bar and party, I cannot because I am a teacher and that would come under moral turpitude. And to me that is wrong and anti american. Yes I understand wanting to protect investments, but not to the point of crapping on the constitution

And to me that is wrong and anti american. Yes I understand wanting to protect investments, but not to the point of crapping on the constitution It's not comparable. These are multi-million dollar athletes that need their physical health to earn money and wins for their team. You're a school teacher who feels that if he goes out for a drink, people will think less of him. Has the school told you that you're not allowed to have a good time outside of work? If they have, then yeah that's pretty lousy. Your work situation and Pac Man Jones's situation are about as different as two work situations can be. You think it's anti-American for a company to want to protect their investment? Jones has been arrested 4 to 6 times, and I'd be all for the Titans asking him to cool it on the partying as well. The Cincinnati Bengals have a midnight curfew. Do you think this is unamerican as well? Your terms are far too dramatic. Nothing about this is akin to slavery. No one is being unamerican.
