September 14, 2007 Card #142: Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis
1) Danny Doring kept up his “Dastardly” ways with a win over Koko B. Ware. “The Birdman” was fired up early on, going to work on Doring, wanting revenge for what happened to S.D. Jones on the last card. Ware hit a cross body block on Doring and the two landed near the ring ropes. While Tommy Gilbert was focused on Doring’s shoulders, Virgil blindsided Ware with a big fist to the face. Doring took over and came off with the Danaconda to score the pin. Cousin Luke came down after the bell and the three went to work on Koko, in a scene similar to the last card. Luke and Virgil held Ware down, while Doring come off the top rope several more times with the Danaconda, right across Koko’s jaw. Ware suffered a broken jaw as well, but sustained more damage than his partner and will be out of action for at least three months. Doring, Luke, and Virgil were bombarded with boos by the Mid-South Coliseum as they left the arena. **¼
2) Greg Valentine pinned B. Brian Blair. “The Hammer” went for the figure-four leglock early on, but Blair reversed it and applied his Scorpion Leglock. Valentine made the ropes, but Blair went right away for a Boston Crab. Valentine quickly got to the ropes again. “The Hammer” came back and pounded on Blair and scored the win after a piledriver. ½*
3) Rikidozan pinned Cousin Luke. Luke didn’t have the same success that partner Danny Doring had. The hillbilly did manage to kick out of two hiplocks, but was pinned after a perfectly executed flying head scissors from the Japanese superstar. *
4) The Vachons scored a somewhat surprising win, considering their dismal 2007 record, by defeating The Flying Redheads. Butcher showed more aggression than he had in a long time, working over Billy Red Lyons for several minutes. The Vachons rammed Lyons into the ringpost, focusing their attack on his head, after the spill Lyons took on the arena floor on the last card in the Redheads’ match with The Midnight Express. Lyons flipped out of Butcher’s Hangman and tagged out to Red Bastien. Bastien busted Mad Dog open with a kick to the face, which was followed up by a sunset flip for a two-count. Lyons was also busted open, as Butcher picked him up into another Hangman. This time it was too much for Lyons, who submitted to the hold. ****¼
5) Bob Orton, Sr. also rebounded from a recent slump to score a win over old rival Mil Mascaras. “The Big O.” pounded on the luchador from the get-go, using his piledriver several times. The fourth piledriver put “The Man of 1,000 Masks” down for the pinfall. **¼
6) The Road Warriors defeated “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in a great tag bout. Hawk and Animal pounded on Rogers, turning his blonde hair red, by busting him open after Hawk hit a top rope splash, landing right across Rogers’ nose, which was broken by The Valiants in 2005. The “Superfly” finally tagged in and went at it with Hawk. Hawk missed a clothesline and nearly collided with Tommy Gilbert. While Hawk and Snuka both helped Gilbert, Rogers came in and clipped Hawk’s leg from behind. Snuka didn’t see his partner’s action, but did take advantage and went for cover. By the time Gilbert was able to make the count, Hawk kicked out. Rogers eventually tagged back in, but The Legion of Doom double teamed him and hit the Doomsday Device to score the pinfall. Hawk and Animal shook hands with Snuka afterwards, but Rogers would not shake hands. Snuka tried to console him about the loss, but Rogers seemed like he didn’t want to listen. ***¾
7) Giant Baba scored a rather quick win over Bruiser Brody. The two popular big men went back-and-forth for the first minute or two, with neither man seeming to gain an advantage. But Baba took over and hit a Russian leg sweep for a nearfall. Baba picked Brody up, whipped him into the ropes, and used a move that both men like to utilize—a big boot to the face. Baba’s boot was effective as it brought him a quick 1-2-3. Baba helped Brody to his feet afterwards and both men shook hands. ½*
8) Dan Severn defeated Sabu by DQ. “The Beast” outwrestled the Bombay madman early on, throwing him around the ring. Sabu apparently got frustrated and rolled out of the ring. With no care for the rules, Sabu brought a steel chair back into the ring and threw it right at Severn’s head, leading Jerry Calhoun to call for the bell. Sabu went to execute a moonsault on Severn afterwards, but Severn rolled out of the way. Severn caught Sabu with a big judo throw, sending him to the floor. “The Beast” then grabbed the chair and threw it towards Sabu and Abdullah Farouk in the aisle, as they made their way to the locker room. Severn looked like a true beast, as he prepares to challenge The Sheik! DUD
9) Nick Bockwinkel scored a decisive victory over “Playboy” Buddy Rose. Bockwinkel utilized the abdominal stretch early on to weaken Rose. But ultimately the Bockwinkel Sleeper put Rose out. Fans were disappointed by the brevity of this match between two old rivals. neg*
10) Two undefeated teams battled for the USWA World Tag Team championship in the main event, as The Midnight Express put the gold on the line against The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy. The Heenan Family duo started off showcasing their power moves on the champions. But “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis took over, showcasing their wide variety of double team maneuvers. They executed a modified version of the Midnight Massacre on the big Bundy, with Condrey stretching Bundy across his knee and Eaton coming off the ropes with the elbow. But the Superstar broke up the pin attempt. Not surprisingly, the “agreement” between Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan didn’t last, as Cornette threw some punches at Superstar, while Condrey had Jerry Calhoun momentarily distracted. Bundy hit the Avalanche on Condrey for a three-count, but of course asked for five. As Calhoun counted 4½, Eaton jumped in with a boot to Bundy to break up the pin. Naturally the Heenan Family was upset by this. Superstar hit Eaton with the spinning neckbreaker, on “Beautiful” Bobby’s previously injured neck. The crowd popped big at the move. Somehow Eaton, managed to kick out at 2¾. Superstar went over near the corner where “The Brain” was and Heenan handed Superstar an object, then got up on the apron. While Calhoun went to reprimand Heenan, Superstar nailed Eaton with a loaded head butt. Condrey and Bundy were fighting on the floor, where Condrey threw the big man into the ringpost. While Superstar was about to cover Eaton, Cornette came around and whacked Heenan with the tennis racket. Calhoun turned his attention to the fighting managers, while Texas champion and bodyguard Justin Credible came in and cracked Superstar in the head with the Singapore Cane! Eaton went for a cover, but Superstar managed to kick out. Yet his starred mask was stained with blood. “Loverboy” Dennis came back in and nailed Superstar with a Double Goozle. Condrey went up to the top rope, but Superstar fell into the ropes, crotching Condrey on the top. Superstar pulled him off the buckles and hit the spinning neckbreaker to put Condrey down for the three-count. Heenan jumped up and down in the ring, as Nick Bockwinkel and Bob Orton, Sr. came down to join The Heenan Family in their celebration. Bundy was still shaken up from the post shot, but was able to hold up his title belt. ****½

The biggest highlight from the September 15 edition of USWA Championship Wrestling was the somewhat surprising announcement that “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers has decided to leave the USWA. “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka was interviewed by Lance Russell, and said (if we understood him correctly!) that his former co-holder of the World Tag Team titles needed a “change of scenery” and was going to wrestle in several different territories in the U.S., taking on any wrestlers looking for a challenge. Snuka said that he himself will resume his tag team with Bruiser Brody, which has been successful in the past, but both men also plan to go for singles gold as well. Rogers was a USWA “original”, having wrestled here since the promotion’s inception in 2004.
The USWA makes its debut at the Taylor County Coliseum in Abilene, TX on September 21! We’re not holding back, as the first card in Abilene will be a huge event! *Speaking of the Jimmy Snuka-Bruiser Brody combination, they will have a big battle ahead of them in the former USWA World Tag Team champions—The Midnight Express. Snuka and Brody scored a victory on “Beautiful” Bobby and Justin Credible back in February in a great ****½ bout, when “Loverboy” Dennis was out with a neck injury. Can The Midnights get back on track or will Snuka and Brody put them down? *Rikidozan will take on a former World Heavyweight champion—“Playboy” Buddy Rose! Rose continues to struggle in ’07, while the Japanese superstar continues winning. Can Rikidozan keep it up? *The new World Tag Team champions The Masked Superstar & King Kong Bundy aren’t taking a breather, as they will do battle with The Road Warriors in a non-title match. Now that The Midnight Express have lost the belts, The Legion of Doom is eligible for another title shot. But remember, fans, the new champs defeated Hawk and Animal last month in Huntsville. Will The Road Warriors give Superstar and Bundy their first loss or can the Heenan Family duo continue their dominance? *Another huge tag team bout will take place, but this one will involve singles superstars. Antonio Inoki and Mil Mascaras will take on the other two Heenan Family members—Nick Bockwinkel and Bob Orton, Sr. There are so many issues among these four men. Of course, Inoki and Bockwinkel have had their battles over the World Heavyweight title and are coming off Inoki’s DQ loss from two weeks ago. Mascaras put Bockwinkel out of action with a concussion, only to get beaten by Bock on his return, with a sneaky pin after Bobby Heenan got involved. Orton holds three pinfall victories over the luchador, while “The Man of 1,000 Masks” has not pinned him or made him submit in a one-on-one contest. Inoki scored a quick win over Orton at the Nashville Fairgrounds last month. Who will win this battle of great competitors? *In the first of two championship contests, Justin Credible will defend the USWA Texas championship against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Valentine scored a non-title pinfall on the champ, but don’t forget, Credible has pinned Valentine on two occasions. And we can’t leave out the respective managers—Jim Cornette and Capt. Lou Albano! The “Louisville Slugger” wants some payback on the rubber banded manager after getting clocked with a foreign object in their “match” at the Nashville Fairgrounds. Can Valentine capture his first USWA singles championship or will Justin cane his way to another win? *The main event will be a huge bout for the USWA Southern Heavyweight championship as the Syrian madman The Sheik defends against Team RPW member Dan “The Beast” Severn! Severn made history by being the second man to defeat The Sheik. Can he take his gold from him as well? All this plus a big rematch between The Killer Bees and The Vachons! Plus Giant Baba, Frank Gotch, and more in action!

NEWS FLASH History was made in Abilene, TX. Greg Valentine became the new USWA Texas champion by forcing Justin Credible to submit. The other news is that in one of the BLOODIEST matches in USWA history, Dan Severn pinned The Sheik to become the new Southern Heavyweight champion! Sheik charged at Severn with his sharp object, but "The Beast" ducked and caught Sheik in a head and arm throw to score the pinfall. This is Sheik's first pin or submission loss in a one-on-one USWA match! Full results to come later!

That's interesting about Sheik..unless he can hit a Fireball, he has a relatively weak offense (although his defense is strong). For me, he could never hit that fireball and eventually he would be worn down on defense...piling up fatigue marks and losing. I think in my 1st go around, he was a .400 wrestler. Just weird how the dice roll for different people. I guess Valentine shows up when a title is on the line right Cory?

September 21, 2007 Card #143: Taylor County Coliseum in Abilene, TX
1) Danny Doring continues to surprise fans with his “Dastardly” ways, as he and Cousin Luke scored a huge upset win, defeating The Flying Redheads in the opener. The hillbilly Luke has shown improvement in recent months, as he was the “stronger” member of the team. Red Bastien and Billy Red Lyons are friends with Koko B. Ware and S.D. Jones, and were looking for some revenge. The Redheads gave Doring a pounding, busting him open, but somehow Doring held on. Lyons appeared to have things wrapped up, as Lyons applied the figure-four leglock in the center of the ring. Luke jumped in to break it up, but was cut off by Bastien. While Kevin Christian was trying to break Luke and Bastien up, Virgil snuck in the ring and clocked Lyons with brass knuckles. This allowed Doring to recover and hit the Danaconda on Lyons. Just to rub it in, Doring hit a second Danaconda, to the already woozy Lyons, and then made the pinfall. The Abilene fans berated the evil trio as they returned to the locker room. ****
2) Lightning struck twice for The Killer Bees, as they came back from a beating to defeat The Vachons. Mad Dog and Butcher were determined to get a win here. Both B. Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell suffered punishment. Mad Dog gave Brunzell a piledriver, but Brunzell got his foot on the bottom rope. Out of nowhere, Blair came back and tagged out to “Jumping” Jim. The Bees hit a double dropkick on Butcher, then Brunzell hit one of his killer dropkicks and went for a cover, but Capt. Lou Albano distracted Tommy Gilbert. A second dropkick a few minutes later but down the big Butcher for the 1-2-3. ***¼
3) Frank Gotch barely got by Virgil in a surprisingly competitive bout. The Team RPW member started off strong against the bodyguard, so Virgil’s brass knuckles made a second appearance, busting Gotch open. Virgil applied the Million Dollar Dream for over two minutes and it looked like Gotch would go out, but he managed to roll into the ropes. Richard Hutton was screaming at Tommy Gilbert about the knucks, but to no avail. Gotch came back and man possessed, outwrestling Virgil and wearing him down with the rolling knee bar. Gotch applied the famous Gotch Toehold, which drew a big pop from the Coliseum. Virgil fought his hardest, but eventually tapped out. ***½
4) The Midnight Express bounced back from their loss of the World Tag Team titles to score an impressive win over “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody. Snuka went for an early Superfly Leap on “Loverboy” Dennis Condrey, but missed. Condrey immediately executed his face-first leg sweep, but only got a two. He hit a second one, but Brody booted Condrey in the face to break it up. Snuka and Brody worked over “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton, but The Midnights rallied back, working over Brody. Condrey sent Brody into the ropes, where Jim Cornette smacked him in the back with tennis racket from outside the ring. (Justin Credible did not accompany Cornette and The Midnights for this match, as he was preparing for his later title defense.) Brody weakened by the shot got hit by Eaton’s Divorce Court. Eaton went for a cover, but only got a two. A couple of minutes later, Eaton and Condrey executed the Midnight Massacre on the big man and put him down for the pinfall. ***¼
5) Giant Baba impressed the Abilene fans, as it took him all of about 20 seconds to defeat Sabu. Sabu stomped Baba, but received a big chop in return. Baba picked him up, whipped him into the ropes, and a dreaded neckbreaker drop ended it all. Not even Abdullah Farouk could save Sabu in this one. Although the fans would have liked to have seen him in the ring longer, Baba received great cheers for his impressive victory. DUD
6) Baba’s Japanese ally Rikidozan scored a quick win as well, making short work of the struggling “Playboy” Buddy Rose. Just a few minutes into the match, Rikidozan hit Rose with some of his thunderous chops, then threw him down with a hiplock, and rolled on top of Rose into a cover and a pin. DUD
7) The Road Warriors gave the new USWA World Tag Team champions their first pinfall loss, as The Legion of Doom scored a non-title win over The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy. Bundy used a chair on Hawk’s back on the arena floor at one point, while Bobby Heenan distracted Kevin Christian. But Hawk came back in the ring and pounded on Bundy. Hawk tagged out to Animal who ran in and nailed the New Jersey giant with a flying shoulder ram, taking Bundy off his feet. Animal covered Bundy, while Hawk cut off the intruding Superstar. Animal was able to put Bundy for the three-count and give the Heenan Family duo their first loss a team, in a surprisingly quick match. ¾*
8) The Heenan Family’s woes for the evening continued, as Nick Bockwinkel and Bob Orton, Sr. lost to Antonio Inoki and Mil Mascaras. After a few minutes of tagging in and out, the international combo, kept “The Big O.” in the ring. Mascaras was hoping to get his first pinfall on Orton, as he hit Orton with three cross body attacks, but Orton was resilent. Inoki tagged in and blasted Orton with an enzuigiri which put Orton down for the count, in another surprisingly brief match. **½
9) Greg “The Hammer” Valentine captured his first USWA singles championship, by winning the Texas title from Justin Credible. Prior to this match, Danny Doring, Cousin Luke, and Virgil came down to ringside. Doring challenged the winner of the match for a title shot. Valentine hit a shoulder breaker early on, which has brought him victory in the past, for a nearfall. He went for the figure-four leglock, but Jim Cornette got up on the ring apron. Capt. Lou Albano came around and pulled him off, which led to the typical brawl between the managers! Valentine applied the figure-four again a few minutes later and scored the submission to win the gold. *
10) The main event saw The Sheik put the Southern Heavyweight title on the line against one of only two men to defeat him in the USWA—Dan “The Beast” Severn. As he often does, Sheik tried to attack Severn before the bell, but Severn saw it coming and immediately took the champ down into a heel hook. Sheik got to the ropes. The challenger threw the champ around the ring several times with his fireman’s carry slam, even dropping Sheik right on his head and busting him open. Sheik took over after a brawl on the floor. He attempted the Camel Clutch, but Severn powered out of the hold. Sheik went for a hammerlock submission as well, but again couldn’t tame “The Beast”. Sheik came off the second turnbuckle with a knee drop to Severn’s head, causing him to bleed as well. But Severn came back again, taking Sheik down into his wakigatame, which caused Sheik to tap on Card #141. This time the champ got to the ropes. He applied it again, but Abdullah Farouk got up on the apron, distracting Paul Morton. Richard Hutton came around the ring and pulled Farouk off, then leveled him with a big forearm shot. Farouk dropped Sheik’s sharp object into the ring, before Hutton pulled him off the apron. Sheik grabbed the object and jabbed Severn right in the head with it. By this point the ring and both grapplers were covered in blood. Sheik pounded away at Severn with the object, but Severn kept coming back. Sheik bounced off the ropes and went for a final blow with the object, but Severn ducked and caught Sheik in a head and arm throw, leading to a pinning combination and a pinfall out of nowhere! The Taylor County Coliseum went berserk, realizing that they had seen The Sheik lose not only his title, but his first singles match by pinfall or submission. Frank Gotch ran down afterwards to celebrate with Hutton and the new champion! (NOTE: Severn had eight fatigue tokens on him, while Sheik had nine!) *****

I'd have to go back in my COTG results, but off hand I can't think of anyone who's had such a long and impressive winning streak. Even though he doesn't hit the fireball that often for me either, he's done well. Valentine got lost looking for Jamestown, wound up in Texas and became a champ.

Highlights of the September 22 and 29 editions of USWA Championship Wrestling:
*Capt. Lou Albano announced he has had enough! The manager made the announcement on the 9-22 show that he had released The Vachons from his stable! Albano said that the brothers had so much potential and aggression when they first arrived in the USWA, but they had lost it. He said he had found a team that would put The Killer Bees out of the USWA again. When Lance Russell asked who that team would be...The Killer Bees. Russell asked what he meant by that, but Albano wouldn't explain. The manager repeated that The Killer Bees were coming to the USWA to destroy The Killer Bees. Many fans wondered if the Captain has officially lost his mind! As for the Vachons, the brothers have left the USWA and are rumored to be headed to the AWA. Apparently they are not happy with the way Albano ditched them, but they may return to the USWA in the future. *After the bloody match on September 21, where Dan Severn made history in defeating The Sheik for the Southern Heavyweight championship, "The Beast" needed several stitches from the cut received by The Sheik's sharp object. Abdullah Farouk wouldn't comment on Sheik's physical condition, but neither he nor Severn are scheduled to wrestle on the next USWA card. Farouk said that Sheik would get his rematch and will return to his reign of terror soon!
The Civic Coliseum in Knoxville will host a great card of USWA action on October 5! *Giant Baba looks to continue his winning ways, as he battles "Playboy" Buddy Rose. Rose continues to flounder, but you never know when he might have something up his sleeve and pull out a win! *Two former World Tag Team champion teams will lock-up again as The Road Warriors battle Frank Gotch and Richard Hutton. It was also announced that The Legion of Doom will get the first shot at The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy on October 12 in Evansville, as a result of their non-title win over the Heenan Family team. But Gotch and Hutton want to duplicate the success of Team RPW member Dan Severn and get another title shot down the line. Who will come out the winners of this one? *In another great tag bout, former champions The Midnight Express will take on the undefeated Killer Bees. This is the Bees' greatest challenge since returning to the USWA. Can they pull off another win or will "Beautiful" Bobby and "Loverboy" Dennis end their streak? *Two old rivals will meet as "The Man of 1,000 Masks" Mil Mascaras takes on Nick Bockwinkel. Bockwinkel got the win on Mascaras in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match after his return, but was aided by a Bobby Heenan distraction in the third fall. Can the luchador achieve victory or will Bock come out on top again? *The main event will be a huge rematch between two popular wrestlers. Ed "Strangler" Lewis will put his USWA World Heavyweight championship on the line against the man he defeated for the belt--Antonio Inoki. Lewis captured the title in Lexington on August 10 in Lexington, although Nick Bockwinkel got involved at one point to save Lewis. Inoki's spokesman has said that he holds no grudge against Lewis for Bockwinkel's actions, but wants a fair rematch to see who the better man is. Will Inoki come out on top or will Lewis keep a stranglehold on the belt? All this plus the new USWA Texas champion Greg "The Hammer" Valentine in action, as well as Rikidozan and World Tag Team champion The Masked Superstar battles Justin Credible!

NEWS FLASH Antonio Inoki captured his second USWA World Heavyweight championship on October 5 in Knoxville, TN by defeating Ed "Strangler" Lewis. The bout saw both grapplers go back-and-forth and hold for hold. A bloody Lewis surrendered to Inoki's octopus hold, but showed great sportsmenship in handing Inoki the belt afterwards and shaking his hand. Inoki is the third man in USWA history to hold the title on two occasions--the first two being Buddy Rose and Nick Bockwinkel. Full results to come later!

October 5, 2007 Card #144: Civic Coliseum in Knoxville
1) Billy Red Lyons got some retribution in the opener, scoring a submission win over Virgil. The bodyguard looked like he would pull off the win early on. Virgil applied the Million Dollar Dream, but Lyons ran him backwards into the turnbuckle to break the hold. The Flying Redhead took control and locked Virgil in the figure-four leglock to gain the submission. **
2) One half of the World Tag Team champions The Masked Superstar also got some revenge defeating Justin Credible. Superstar wanted this match after Credible had interfered in the match where Superstar and King Kong Bundy won the USWA World Tag Team titles from The Midnight Express and hit Superstar with his Singapore cane. Superstar controlled most of the action here, focusing the attack on Credible’s neck, using the spinning neckbreaker several times and even busting Justin open. It would be the neckbreaker that put Credible down for the three-count. Surprisingly, Jim Cornette and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan did not get too involved in this one. *¾
3) New Texas champion Greg Valentine scored a win over a former champion, Red Bastien. This one was back-and-forth with both men hitting their finishers and other specialty moves throughout. Valentine kicked out of Bastien’s atomic drop early on. At one point, Valentine went for the figure-four, but Bastien reversed it into a small package for a nearfall. “The Hammer” successfully applied the figure-four later to force a tapout on Bastien. ***¼
4) The other half of the World Tag Team champions King Kong Bundy teamed up with another Heenan Family member, Bob Orton, Sr. to get a win over “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka and Bruiser Brody. Snuka and Brody were hoping to get a win over one-half of the tag champs to move on toward a shot. Bundy got hit by both a Brody jumping knee drop and a picture perfect Superfly Leap. After the Leap, Bobby Heenan distracted Tommy Gilbert, allowing Orton to nail a knee to the back. Bundy recovered and hit the “Superfly” with an Avalanche, but Brody broke up the pin attempt. Bundy locked Snuka in a bear hug to wear him down, then tagged out to “The Big O.”. The duo hit a nice double team suplex on Snuka. Bundy nailed Brody in the corner with a forearm smash, while Orton made the cover and got the pin. **½
5) Before challenging for the World Tag Team titles, The Road Warriors scored a victory over the Team RPW duo of Frank Gotch and Richard Hutton. Gotch and Hutton worked over Animal for the first few minutes, scoring near wins with a Hutton side salto and the Gotch Toehold, but Animal managed to hold on in both cases. Hawk came back in and worked over Gotch, then tagged Animal back in. A Doomsday Device would put the Iowan down for the count and give The Legion of Doom the win. **
6) Rikidozan had his most competitive match to date in the USWA, but just got by Sabu in a bloody match. Sabu used his suicidal offense as his primary weapon, while Rikidozan blasted Sabu with various chops. Abdullah Farouk distracted Kevin Christian, while Sabu brought a steel chair in and then hit an Arabian facebuster. Sabu set up the chair in the middle, then went for the triple jump moonsault. His aim was off, but his leg came down across Rikidozan’s face, which busted him open. The move wasn’t enough for a pin, but Sabu went for the Camel Clutch instead. With his fingers pried into Rikidozan’s face, the blood flowed more. But the fans were behind the Japanese superstar and Rikidozan broke out of the hold, then nailed Sabu with some of his thunderous chops. One chop connected right with Sabu’s nose and drew blood on him as well. The two were exchanging blows in the middle, when Rikidozan hit a kick to the stomach. With Sabu bent over, Rikidozan bounced off the ropes and nailed a big chop to the back of Sabu’s neck. Rikidozan covered the fallen Sabu and got the win. *****
7) Giant Baba pinned “Playboy” Buddy Rose. Rose was getting beaten down and rolled out of the ring. While “Sensational” Sherri Martel distracted Tommy Gilbert on one side, Rose grabbed her purse and cracked Baba across the head with it. The giant dropped and Rose quickly went for a cover, but Baba got his foot on the ropes. Baba recovered and came back an angry giant. He signaled for his dreaded neckbreaker drop, but Rose bailed out, before Baba could connect. Baba successfully landed the neckbreaker drop a few minutes later and got the win. **
8) The Midnight Express beat The Killer Bees by DQ. B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell started off fast, hitting the Bee Sting on both “Beautiful” Bobby and “Loverboy” Dennis, but failed to score the pin. The Midnights came back and Eaton scored a nearfall after an elbow drop off the top rope on Blair. Blair bounced off the ropes, but was tripped up by Jim Cornette while Kevin Christian had his back momentarily turned. Brunzell tried to tell Christian about the interference, but he wouldn’t listen. Cornette started laughing at ringside, which infuriated “Jumping” Jim, who grabbed Cornette’s tennis racket and nailed both him and Justin Credible with it. Meanwhile in the ring, Eaton tagged out to Condrey and the two hit the Midnight Massacre on Blair. Brunzell jumped in the ring and nailed both Midnights with the racket, right in front of Christian, which naturally led to a disqualification. **¼
9) Nick Bockwinkel scored a win over rival Mil Mascaras, once again with some help from Bobby Heenan. The luchador started off fast, hitting one of his beautiful flying body presses on Bockwinkel for a two-count. Bock took over after ramming Mascaras’ leg into the ringpost. He worked over the leg, stomping on it on the ropes. Bockwinkel locked on the figure-four leglock. Mascaras fought it for over a minute. Heenan reached in and grabbed Bockwinkel’s hands for extra leverage, unbeknownst to Tommy Gilbert. Mascaras wouldn’t surrender, but the pain weakened him enough so that his shoulders were down. Bockwinkel scored a pin with the leglock. The Civic Coliseum erupted into boos. Heenan entered the ring to celebrate with his charge, but Mascaras knocked him out of the ring. He then nailed Bockwinkel with a big chop. Despite limping, Mascaras went up to the top turnbuckle. It looked like he was going to dive on Heenan on the floor, but then turned and nailed Bockwinkel with the flying body press. He got up and was able to dropkick Bockwinkel out of the ring. Bock hit his arm on the security railing as he fell out and was seen holding his arm. It turned out he suffered a minor arm injury, but isn’t expected to miss any matches. **
10) As reported on in the last update, Antonio Inoki defeated Ed “Strangler” Lewis to regain the USWA World Heavyweight title in the main event. This being the fourth meeting between the two, the two grapplers seemed to know each other, as they seemed to have counters for one another’s moves. Lewis locked on a double wristlock, but Inoki scampered to the ropes. “Strangler” was only able to throw Inoki once with his headlock and again Inoki broke free. The Japanese superstar made a comeback and hit two enzuigiris. But Lewis showcasing his renowned toughness, staggered to his feet. Inoki went for a third enzuigiri, but Lewis ducked and Inoki crashed to the mat. Lewis locked on a half nelson and went for a cover, but Inoki got his shoulder up. A few minutes later, Inoki came off the top with a big knee drop right to Lewis’ head, which busted the “Strangler” open. Inoki locked on the octopus hold. Lewis covered in blood, struggled for the ropes, but ultimately had to surrender. Jerry Calhoun went to hand Inoki the championship afterward, but Lewis grabbed the belt out of his hands. Fans wondered what the “Strangler’s” actions would be, but Lewis handed Inoki the belt, then raised his hand in victory. Both grapplers shook hands in a great show of sportsmanship and respect for one another. ***½

Highlights from USWA Championship Wrestling on October 6:
• A video aired that was taped earlier in the week on location from Dallas. Bill Apter interviewed, “Dastardly” Danny Doring, who was in training for his Texas title match on October 19 against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Doring wants to be an “authentic” Texan and will be training in Dallas for the next couple of weeks. But his training doesn’t consist of wrestling training. This video showed him learning how to ride a horse! Actually Doring, to no one’s surprise made Cousin Luke ride the horse, while he and Virgil watched. • Speaking of the Dallas card, the great Argentinian wrestler Antonino Rocca will be in action! Rocca is coming to the U.S. to compete after competing in his native country in the promotion known as Titanes del Ring. He is a high flying sensation, who uses a lot of fancy footwork! Rocca has signed to wrestle on the last two USWA Dallas cards of the year. No word at this time as to whether Rocca will compete in other cities on the USWA circuit or not. • Another new wrestler will soon debut as well, as amateur great and former NWA World Jr. Heavyweight champion Danny Hodge has been announced as the newest member of Team RPW. Richard Hutton announced that Hodge is looking forward to new competition in the USWA, against opponents of any size. Frank Gotch announced that George Hackenschmidt’s broken ribs were more serious than originally thought. There is no timetable for his return. Hutton also announced that a huge rematch has been signed for October 19 in Dallas, as Dan “The Beast” Severn will put the Southern Heavyweight title on the line against The Sheik!
A huge night of great wrestling action will take place on October 12, when the USWA comes back to the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Evansville! • Before Dan Severn and The Sheik do battle for the Southern Heavyweight gold, they will take on an ally of the other man. The Sheik will take on long-time nemesis Frank Gotch. Sheik captured the Southern gold from Gotch back in April and Gotch is dying to join Team RPW teammates Severn and Richard Hutton as the elite group of wrestlers who have defeated The Sheik. Severn will do battle with Sheik’s nephew Sabu in a non-title bout. Sabu got quickly disqualified against Severn on Card #142 in Memphis, but “The Beast” sent Sabu to the back scared. These will certainly be two wild bouts! • Speaking of old rivals, “The Man of 1,000 Masks” Mil Mascaras is hoping to finally score a pin or submission on “The Big O.” Bob Orton, Sr. Orton is looking for some revenge for Mascaras’ attacks on Nick Bockwinkel. Will the luchador finally get the decisive win? • Despite an injured arm, Nick Bockwinkel will compete, as he battles Giant Baba. Baba holds two pinfall victories over Bockwinkel this year. Bockwinkel has asked the USWA Committee for the next shot at the World Heavyweight gold, since he hasn’t received a rematch yet. But Baba’s on a roll and would love a shot as well. Who will win this very important match? • The main event will be a huge (literally!) tag team match, as The Masked Superstar and King Kong Bundy make their first defense of the USWA World Tag Team titles against former champs The Road Warriors. These teams are 1-1 against each other, with The Legion of Doom being the only team to score a victory on the champs. Will the Road Warriors win this “rubber match” and a record third USWA Tag Team championship? Or will the Heenan Family hold on to the straps? Plus Rikidozan battles Team RPW member Richard Hutton, The Midnight Express, The Killer Bees, and more great bouts!
