(we don't use those silly Roman numerals here in the NWF)
If you're referring to my use of them in the New Year's Knockout results, I could make the excuse that I teach Latin. Also, I think they look cool.

Cory, you take things so personally! The Roman numerals thing is just a pet peeve. Never liked it for the "other" Superbowl that the NFL puts together, so I don't use it. I'm easily confused by a concept of letters that represent numbers that comes from a long-dead culture.

"Road to the Superbowl" Card #207 - 12/24/2006 St. John's Arena - Steubenville, OHEaton's manager Jim Cornette was not at ringside, as Eaton flew in while Cornette chose to drive (much to the chagrin of Dairy Queen owners along his route). I just watched that a couple of weeks ago! If you starting incorporating CCW angles into the NWF, I'll be a happy man (and the NWF will be out of business!) Cory, remember the trouble Connor had with the Roman Numerals on the clock on Christmas Eve? Leave Dalton alone! If I could only remember what happened at the Superbowl, I'd start my own thread and spoil all of Tim's happenings. I guess that's why I'm a trusted NWF booking consultant. I can never remember anything that happens or any angles I suggest!

Cory, remember the trouble Connor had with the Roman Numerals on the clock on Christmas Eve? Leave Dalton alone! Ahh, yes! Good point. They can be confusing. The "they look cool line" was meant as an inside joke. If you two aren't sure of which of our million inside references that is, let me know and I'll remind you.

SUPERBOWL OF WRESTLING 4 Card #208 - 12/29/2006 Civic Arena - Pittsburgh, PA
Welcome to the annual NWF year-end blowout! It's the biggest show of the year, and fans everywhere were looking forward to the huge match between The Sheik and Bobo Brazil in a barbed wire cage match so violent, it couldn't be sanctioned by the NWF!
1. Riviera Playboys dq S.D. Jones & Virgil One of the best matches between these two teams. Neither could hold a sustained advantage in the fast-paced bout. Finish saw Virgil get DQ'd for giving Rose a low blow right in front of the referee. Minutes earlier, Rose had gotten away with the same thing on Virgil. S.D. had to calm his partner down after the bell.
2. Yukon Eric b Bob Orton, Sr. Dominating win for Yukon, who barely let "The Big O" get any offense in. After losing his first three singles bouts, Yukon went 7-2 and has established himself as a singles contender. His tag-team with Danny Hodge is also 4-0, and the future looks bright for this colorful grappler.
3. Justin Credible & Danny Doring dq Chris Candido & Steve Corino Before the bout, both teams asked the ref to be a little lenient on the rules. He agreed to let them fight, but said he didn't want to see the Singapore Cane or other weapons involved. Real good bout until Corino blasted Doring with the ring bell for the DQ.
4. Red Bastien dq Rick Rude After being hit with the Rude Awakening several times in the tag match on last week's card, Bastien defended well and didn't let Rude use it at all. Red was jawing with Albano the entire bout. Finish saw Albano hand Rude some knucks, and he KO'd Red for the pin. Billy "Red" Lyons ran to the ring and told the ref what happened. The ref found the knucks in Rude's tights, and reversed the decision.
5. Special Attraction: Dusty Rhodes dq Jesse "The Body" Ventura Two flamboyant personalities squared off in this special match between non-NWF wrestlers who were flown in for the show. Rhodes kept laying in the Bionic Elbow's which caused a frustrated Ventura to take a lot of shortcuts. Ventura had "The American Dream" in the ropes and was choking him, and wouldn't stop. The referee tried to stop him, but got punched in the face and knocked silly for his trouble. Rhodes came back and cleaned house on Ventura, but the ref properly called for the DQ on Ventura.
6. Antonino Rocca & Ilio DiPaolo dq Diamond Dallas Page & King Kong Bundy Matchups mainly saw Bundy against Ilio and Rocca against DDP. Rocca was all over DDP, but when he got him in the Argentinian Backbreaker, Bundy blindsided him, which caused a DQ. The New Jersey combo paraded around like they had won, but the very popular duo of Rocca & DiPaolo were the winners.
At this point, there was an intermission. The crowd was a little restless, with non-finishes in five of the first six bouts. There were some small negative chants and complaints, but veteran NWF fans know that things seem to work out in the end.
7. World Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Bobby Eaton b Danny Hodge Champion Bobby Eaton had manager Jim Cornette at ringside for this title defense. Eaton, no stranger to NWF rings, retained the title after an inadvertant ref bump helped his cause. Hodge had been taking him to school, and even had Eaton pinned when the ref was down. Right before a second ref hit the ring, Cornette smashed Hodge with the tennis racket, which swung the momentum back to Eaton, who won with the Alabama Jam.
8. Mad Dog Vachon & Billy "Red" Lyons b Larry Zbyszko & Magnificent Muraco This was the first time Heenan and Albano had worked together, and the result wasn't what they had hoped. Both managers were at ringside, and couldn't get along. Every time something bad happened, they would point fingers and blame the others' wrestler. The horrible lack of teamwork led to their downfall, as Lyons trapped Zbyszko in the Sleeper for the win. There were words exchanged after the bell and there was a little pushing and shoving, but things were broken up before they could escalate.
9. "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant b Ray Stevens These two had traded house show wins going into this match. An injured Stevens hit an early Bombs Away that looked like the end, but The Crusher pulled Stevens out of the ring during the cover, and was sent to the back by the ref for his actions. Valiant came back and Stevens had to be saved twice when locked in the Sleeper. The last save got Heenan booted from ringside as well. Valiant got the Sleeper one more time for the upset victory.
10. NWF Tag-Team Championship: Masked Executioners b Jimmy Snuka & Don Leo Jonathan This match was for the held up tag-team titles. Snuka & Bruiser Brody were champs when Brody unexpectedly left the area. The belts were vacated, with the Masked Executioners (the #1 contenders) to face Snuka and a new partner of his choice for the belts. This was a tag-team match of the year candidate, with unbelievable action! It was all action, with both Executioners looking like they were done at various times. It turned into a marathon battle between four exhausted wrestlers, Albano was interfereing like crazy, but Snuka & Jonathan overcame it all and wouldn't give up. Snuka went to the top, but missed a Superfly on #1, who was pulled to safety by #2. After a quick tag, #2 pounced on the hurt Snuka and used the Backbreaker Drop to make the Executioners two-time champions.
11. NWF Championship: Nick Bockwinkel dq The Crusher What a classic brawl to end the sanctioned portion of the show! Crusher hit the Bolo Punch, but Heenan interfered, allowing Bockwinkel (boo!) to lock in his Sleeper. This time Vachon interfered to turn things around again! Crusher hit two more Bolo's, and looked to be moments away from winning the title. He had Bockwinkel tied up in the ropes. The referee was trying to break things up, but got knocked halfway across the ring when Crusher accidentally hit him while winding up for another Bolo Punch! The Crusher was DQ'd in a hugely unpopular decision. There was actually fear that the crowd might get out of hand, so it was announced that the two would meet in January in a Texas Death Match to settle the score.
And then...THE LIGHTS WENT OUT,,,to signify the end of the NWF sanctioned portion of the show. And when the lights came back on, the imposing structure of the Barbed Wire Cage was put together during a brief intermission.
12. Bobo Brazil b The Sheik (Barbed Wire Cage Match) Abdullah Farouk and Sabu were sent to the back before the bell rang. The referee was supplied by the NWF, but worked the match "at his own risk" as the organization wanted nothing to do with this bout. Sheik has a habit of starting slowly, but turning things around when the tactics get nasty. That's how this one began, but Sheik never turned the corner. Bobo beat the living hell out of the Syrian madman the whole time. The Sheik came out on the wrong end of every single whip into the barbed wire. After one such body-shredding experience, Bobo hit him with a Coco Butt and put his shoulders down for the 1-2-3 and the first ever singles pinfall victory over The Sheik! The crowd erupted and cheered for several minutes. Bobo grabbed The Sheik's North American Title and walked around with it held high, even though the title was not on the line. Once Bobo got out of the cage, he was mobbed by fans, and had trouble getting back to the dressing room. Once there, he was met with a champagne shower by his comrades and it started a party that went into the next day!
And so ends the 2006 year. It was a great one for the NWF and ended with one of the biggest matches in the organization's history!
We've still got some year-end house cleaning issues (like rankings and annual awards) to deal with. Then we'll storm on into 2007! The World League Challenge is already set for the early part of the year. Who knows what other craziness will transpire as 2007 moves along? No matter what, the NWF will always be a place where the wrestling is hot and action-packed, so keep watching!

Great card, Tim, even with so many DQ's. Cool to see you did the Barbed Wire match last, since it was not sanctioned. Can't wait to read about '07 and the World League Tourney!

***2006 YEAR-END AWARDS*** WRESTLER OF THE YEARWinner - THE SHEIK Runner Up - Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) Here's the theme for the 2006 awards - in any other year, Bockwinkel is a lock, but this was the year of The Sheik's unholy reign of terror. Sheik has not been pinned or submitted in a sanctioned singles bout since entering the NWF in November 2005. That's crazy. Baba would place a distant third. Previous winners: 2005 - Don Leo Jonathan 2004 - Nick Bockwinkel 2003 - Johnny Valentine TAG-TEAM OF THE YEARWinner - THE DREAM TEAM Runner Up - Masked Executioners Clean sweep for Lou Albano. Valentine & Beefcake dominated the early half of the year and had the second longest tag title reign in NWF history. Executioners won the titles twice, and were double tough in special matches. Brody/Snuka and Flying Redheads get honorable mention. Previous winners: 2005 - Midnight Express 2004 - Road Warriors 2003 - Buddy Rogers & Jimmy Snuka MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLERWinner - MAD DOG VACHON Runner Up - Masked Superstar Most Outstanding is based only on match quality (most matches rated 4 stars or higher), and 2006 was a Dog Eat Dog year, with Vachon hitting the mark an incredible 7 times! Superstar just edged out Baba for second. Previous winners: 2005 - Bobo Brazil 2004 - Nick Bockwinkel 2003 - Harley Race MOST OUTSTANDING TAG-TEAMWinner - MASKED EXECUTIONERS Runner Up - The Sheik & Sabu This was a four team race, but the Executioners pulled it out with their 5 star donnybrook at SB4. Others close were Ox Baker & Missing Link and Don Leo Jonathan & Yukon Eric. Previous winners: 2005 - Giant Baba & The Destroyer 2004 - Johnny & Greg Valentine 2003 - Buddy Rogers & Jimmy Snuka FEUD OF THE YEARWinner - DON LEO JONATHAN vs. THE SHEIK Runner Up - Flying Redheads vs. Lou Albano Jonathan made a great run at The Sheik's North American Title in a classic 4 match series which included a DQ win for each, a double DQ and Sheik's eventual Cage Match victory. The Redheads were at odds with Albano for most of the year, winning the tag belts from his Dream Team and later losing them to the Masked Executioners. The Sheik vs. Bobo takes a close third. Previous winners: 2005 - Nick Bockwinkel vs. Buddy Rogers 2004 - Jimmy Snuka vs. Buddy Rogers 2003 - Harley Race vs. Nick Bockwinkel SINGLES MATCH OF THE YEARWinner - THE SHEIK vs. BOBO BRAZIL (Card 181 - J Valentine as special ref) Runner Up - Mad Dog Vachon vs. Ted DiBiase (Card 176) The Sheik/Bobo match in June at a spot show in Hubbard, OH was simply the best match in NWF history (so far). It was the bloodbath of all bloodbaths, with 15 near falls and tons of drama. Vachon and an injured DiBiase put on a hell of a show when Mad Dog was part of the Heenan Family. Previous winners: 2005 - Johnny Valentine vs. King Kong Bundy (Card 116) 2004 - Ted DiBiase vs. Buddy Rogers (Card 75 - Lumberjack Match) 2003 - Nick Bockwinkel vs. Harley Race (Card 52 - Alley Fight) TAG-TEAM MATCH OF THE YEARWinner - EXECUTIONERS vs. FLYING REDHEADS (Card 192 - Texas Death Match) Runner Up - Dream Team vs. Ox Baker & Missing Link (Card 171) The Executioners retained the title in a crazy four-way bloodbath in the September blowoff to their big feud. Every match between the Dream Team and Ox/Link was an outstanding brawl, but this one from the Steel Belt Clash was the best. Previous winners: 2005 - Giant Baba & The Destroyer vs. Valiants & Lou Albano (Card 114 - Handicap Match) 2004 - Red Bastien & Bobo Brazil vs. Valiants (Card 88 - Best of Three Falls) 2003 - Red Bastien & Bobo Brazil vs. Giant Baba & Harley Race (Card 27) BEST GOOD GUY(S)Winner - GIANT BABA Runner Up - The Crusher "Neck-a-break-a Drop-o" must be Japanese for "match over" - which Baba's finisher usually meant. He was a big (!) fan favorite from the NWF's inception, and left in November as the fed's leader in all-time victories. Da Crush made a big impression as the NWF's working class hero. His out of ring antics rivaled his wrestling accomplishments. Previous winners: 2005 - Nick Bockwinkel 2004 - Jimmy Snuka 2003 - Giant Baba BEST BAD GUY(S)Winner - THE SHEIK Runner Up - Nick Bockwinkel Another one that Bockwinkel would have had in the bag if not for the phenomenon of The Sheik. With his unbeatable aura and nasty Fireball, Sheik was evil incarnate. The addition of Abdullah Farouk will only make him more dangerous in 2007! Distant third place would be the Masked Executioners, who seemed to get under everyone's skin in the tag ranks. Previous winners: 2005 - Buddy Rogers 2004 - Buddy Rogers 2003 - Nick Bockwinkel BEST NEWCOMERWinner - LARRY ZBYSZKO Runner Up - Rikidozan The Living Legend joined the Heenan Family in August and jumped into a headline feud by winning his first six matches. He finished 8-2 against tough competition. If Rikidozan had been around longer, he may have been the favorite to win this award. Honorable mention to Steve Corino in singles, Billy "Red" Lyons in tag, and Ray Stevens for a little of both. Previous winners: 2005 - The Sheik 2004 - Don Leo Jonathan BEST COMEBACKWinner - PLAYBOY BUDDY ROSE Runner Up - Jimmy Snuka This award is meant for the wrestler who best reversed his fortunes from the previous year. Rose compiled a 7-3 record in singles after returning to the NWF as half of the Riviera Playboys in July. Snuka was 10-10 in 2005 and started 2006 on a 2-5 slide. Then he got hot and won 10 of his last 14 bouts, and has been given the next North American Title shot at The Sheik! Previous winners: 2005 - Gorgeous George 2004 - Jimmy Snuka

Tim, don't be so sad that you don't have award winners named yet. Great writeup on the SB4 card. Gotta love that Bobo went out on top. Sent the fans home happy, despite a bunch of sketchy finishes earlier. World League Challenge will be going on for a while. Some good matchups in the first round, but Sheik vs. Snuka should be the best.

Cool to see that there is someone more evil than Bockwinkel terrorizing the NWF. Will they lock-up in '07? I like how the Redheads feuded with two different Albano-managed teams in '06, and that both teams were the top teams of the year. Can't wait for '07 results!

STATE OF THE FEDERATION Looking toward 2007 Crusher, Mad Dog Vachon & Jimmy Valiant continue their struggles against the Heenan Family of Nick Bockwinkel (boo!), Ray Stevens and Larry Zbyszko. Bockwinkel will face Crusher in a Texas Death Match for the NWF Championship in January after several inconclusive finishes. Crusher also has some unfinished business with Iron Mike DiBiase to take care of. Heenan may be looking for a bodyguard/enforcer to help his Family against their hard-brawling counterparts. The Sheik's unholy reign of terror hit a roadblock with his Superbowl loss to Bobo Brazil, but his record setting North American Title reign continues. Jimmy Snuka (who has won his last 5 singles bouts) is the next challenger in line. Coincidentally, the two also meet in the first round of the World League Challenge. Abdullah Farouk is now more active in Sheik's managerial duties, and can be expected at ringside during his matches. Sabu, on the other hand, is being phased down and may leave the NWF in the next month or two. The Flying Redheads have formed a loose alliance with Jimmy Snuka & Don Leo Jonathan to battle common foe Lou Albano. Albano's group consists of Magnificent Muraco, newly signed Rick Rude and the Masked Executioners, who are now two-time tag champs. Popular duo Antonino Rocca & Ilio DiPaolo have got some problems with the New Jersey combo of Diamond Dallas Page & King Kong Bundy. Look for the heat to get turned up in that feud. Yukon Eric & Danny Hodge have struck up a odd friendship and are unbeaten as a tag-team. If things keep going well, they may get a title shot at the Executioners soon. Iron Mike DiBiase & Bob Orton, Sr. expect to team regularly in 2007. They claim that the tag titles will be around their waists in a few short months. S.D. Jones & Virgil continue to battle the Riviera Playboys (Rose & Koko), who are managed by Sherri Martel. Martel wants to take the team to the top, and Rose has had some solid singles success of late. Jones & Virgil have not done well as a team, and there is starting to be some tension between them as a result. And, of course, there's the World League Challenge - a 16 man single elimination tournament with competitors from around the globe. Thanks to everyone who's been following the NWF action! 2007 will be coming at you shortly!

Tim, the World League Challenge really looks great. It is something I've had in mind to do something along those lines in my fed. I love the choice of Dr. Death for the U.S., he is one of my all-time favorites. I answered your question about my scoring for the Family Feud. Also check out my ICW thread, I posted a history of Bobo Brazil vs. the Sheik.

Before getting into NWF 2007, I'd like to thank Chad and his folks for taking good care of me this past weekend, as I was in Iowa for the National Duals in Cedar Falls and grand opening of the International Wrestling Institute & Museum in Waterloo.
Chad's alma mater Iowa State took third (they were ranked #6 going in), beating Michigan, Hofstra (#3) and Oklahoma State (#4) in the two day festivities, losing only to eventual winner Minnesota. They sure do like wrestling in those midwest states! Kurt Backes (ISU 197 lbs) wasn't quite as bad as Chad led me to believe, going 4-0 without a close match in the bunch.
And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Card #209 - 01/05/2007 Erie County Fieldhouse - Erie, PA
2006 came to a shocking conclusion at Superbowl of Wrestling 4, and now we kick off 2007 with the first match of the World League Challenge and the continuing saga of the NWF!
1. Iron Mike DiBiase & Bob Orton, Sr. cor S.D. Jones & Virgil DiBiase did most of the damage, but it was The Big O who figured in the finish, as he Piledrove S.D. Jones on the floor to give his team the countout victory.
2. Rick Rude b Red Bastien Rude avenges his DQ loss to Red at SB4. Bastien barely survived a Rude Awakening and made a fiery comeback. He was trying for the Atomic Drop, but Rude reversed into a butterfly suplex for the pin in front of the Pennsylvania Pinheads.
3. Danny Hodge b Masked Executioner #1 After a controversial loss to World Jr. Heavyweight Champ Bobby Eaton at SB4, Hodge made a statement here against the mammoth Executioner. Finish saw him dropkick the big man into manager Lou Albano, who was on the apron attempting to interfere. Hodge tied up #1 with the Oklahoma Sideroll for the win. This will lead to Hodge and partner Yukon Eric getting a tag title shot at the Executioners in Uniontown, PA in two weeks.
4. King Kong Bundy b Antonino Rocca Big upset. Unlike their previous bout, Rocca wasn't able to keep his distance. Bundy surprised the popular Rocca with three Avalanches, playing to the crowd after each of the first two, then finally getting his 5 count after the third.
5. Justin Credible & Danny Doring b Chris Candido & Steve Corino Another all out brawl between these teams. It was fairly even until Credible, then Doring, put a bloody beating on Candido. Corino got the tag, but got the same treatment. Credible pinned Corino after several shots with the Singapore Cane. This continues the streak where Credible can pin Corino in tag bouts, but never in singles.
6. Diamond Dallas Page b Ilio DiPaolo Rematch from Card #207 where Ilio got battered, but came back to get the victory. This time DDP was much more serious, winning after two Russia Leg Sweeps and proclaiming to Ilio - "You're Done!"
7. Larry Zbyszko dq Mad Dog Vachon Great action where Vachon had Zbyszko pinned twice, only to have Heenan break things up each time. Zbyszko removed the turnbuckle pad and eventually Vachon took a hard whip into the exposed buckle. The Living Legend followed with a Piledriver, but The Crusher ran in and nailed Zbyszko with a Bolo Punch for the DQ.
8. World League Challenge: Mil Mascaras (MEX) b Al Costello (AUS) First bout in the international 16 man tournament. Fans gave former NWF wrestler Mascaras a warm welcome, and he responded. A distraction by Wild Red Berry gave Costello his only offense of the bout, but it wasn't enough to take down the Man of 1,000 Masks, who won with his Crossbody Attack.
9. Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens b The Crusher & Jimmy Valiant Big battle leading to Nick Bockwinkel (boo!) defending the NWF Championship against Crusher next week in a Texas Death Match! Crusher was cleaning house until he got double-teamed by Heenan's duo. After being knocked out by a spike piledriver, Crusher was put in the Figure Four Leglock by the champ, who was clearly looking to injure his title challenger for the upcoming bout. With Crusher out like a light, Valiant threw in the towel, which had the rulebreakers laughing until they realized Valiant had outsmarted them! No real damage was done to Crusher's leg, and he would now be at 100% for the Texas Death Match!
What a start to 2007! Next week we go to Johnstown, PA for the big showdown between Bockwinkel and Crusher!
Also on the card: * We'll see a rematch between the teams of Mike DiBiase & Bob Orton and S.D. Jones & Virgil. Hopefully Jones will be cleared to wrestle after the devastating piledriver by Orton. * Yukon Eric faces Masked Executioner #2 as Albano tries to soften up the next tag challengers for his masked duo. * Jimmy Snuka & Don Leo Jonathan square off against The Sheik & Sabu in tag action! This will be interesting, as Snuka is the next challenger for Sheik's North American Title (Card #212) but also faces the Syrian madman the week before as part of the World League Challenge! * Speaking of the WLC, the next first round match pits Mad Dog Vachon (ALG) against Killer Kowalski (CAN) in what doesn't look to be a scientific encounter! * Of course, the big main event will be the long awaited Texas Death Match for the NWF Title as Nick Bockwinkel defends against The Crusher!

Great to see the Worlf League challenge finally kicking off. Mil gets the easy win and has a good chance at a bye, because I see some DQs happening next week with Killer and Mad Dog. Prediction: Snuka beats the Sheik in the WLC but doesn't win the NA title the next week...thus keeping his streak intact.
Big shock to see my hometown Hofstra team ranked so high in the wrestling world. Wow.

Big shock to see my hometown Hofstra team ranked so high in the wrestling world. Wow. Aside from beating Minnesota early in the season, I can't figure out why they got that high. They dropped matches to Iowa State and Iowa this weekend. We're now up to #3, heading in to the start of the Big 12 wrestling season at Nebraska on Saturday night. Cory & I will be in attendance, go Cyclones!
