Memphis, Portland, and TNA proudly bring to you:
CROSSROADS OF CHAMPIONS
This card took me a little over two hours (real time) to play in full. It features talent from the Memphis, Portland, and TNA territories/eras. During the card, I logged the play-by-play over the sonofthread chatroom, while various promoters popped in and watched parts of it live. If you were unable to join us for the live presentation of the card, here is a simple recap of the card. While it will not do the live feed justice, I hope that you will enjoy the card anyway.
BELL TIME: 7:25 Eastern Standard Time
People in the room: Me.
MATCH #1 (Memphis):
Rock ‘N’ Roll Express vs. The PYT Express
RESULT: Robert Gibson never really gave Ricky Morton a chance in this match, as Norvell Austin pins Gibson with a flying head dive at 7:28 EST.
MATCH #2 (Portland):
Billy Jack Haynes vs. Chris Adams
RESULT: Billy Jack Haynes gets disqualified for brawling outside of the ring. It’s a shame, because this match was pretty competitive (Haynes had 3 tokens against Adams who had 2). Chris Adams declared winner at 7:33 EST.
ATTENDANCE: Me. (I whispered at Holli, who was in the main room, but she failed to come join the COTG room).
MATCH #3 (Portland):
“Beetlejuice” Art Barr vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers
-Coal Miner’s Glove Match-
RESULT: It takes half the match before Art Barr can knock Jaggers out of the ring to grab the glove, but it doesn’t do him much good, as both men take turns using the glove anyway. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers wins the match at 7:41 EST, after delivering a low blow to Barr, and using the coal miner’s glove to back fist him.
MATCH #4 (TNA)
Abyss vs. Rhyno
-Mensa Tables Match, because I said so-
RESULT: Rhyno doesn’t give Abyss a chance, as he puts Abyss through both tables and pins him with the Gore at 7:50 EST.
ATTENDANCE: At this time, we are also joined by BDS, and Holli – who comes in and out intermittently.
MATCH #5 (Portland):
The Bruise Brothers vs. The Southern Rockers
RESULT: Bruise Brothers win at 7:56 with a Double Running Boot.
MATCH #6 (TNA):
LAX vs. America’s Most Wanted
RESULT: This match pits TNA’s top two homegrown tag teams. Homicide comes back from the dead to pin Storm with the Gringo Killah at 8:04 EST.
ATTENDANCE: myself, BDS, Neilybob, Holli, and Weirdjerod. The next match was a five-star classic, with BDS and weirdjerod pulling very heavily for Eddie Gilbert
MATCH #7 (Memphis):
Austin Idol vs. Eddie Gilbert
-Memphis Cage Match-
RESULT: This is an instant 5-star classic. Gilbert comes hot out of the gate, but after a blind charge, Idol goes straight to the Las Vegas Leglock and a sleeperhold. Gilbert bleeds soon after, but resiliently refuses to go down that easily. In fact, Gilbert takes advantage of the no-dq rule, and uses several piledrivers to try to wear down Idol. However, Idol comes back and slams Gilbert’s face over the concrete, ring steps, and cage – busting Gilbert’s minor gash into an all out crimson mask. The crowd (mainly BDS and weirdjerod) cheers Eddie on vociferously in support of their hero, as Eddie somehow persists. Eddie Gilbert finds enough energy to slam Idol’s face into the cage, and arrogantly tries his version of the Las Vegas Leglock, before blasting Idol with a fireball! However, this does not prove to be enough to keep Idol down. Gilbert throws everything he has at Idol, but Idol seemingly withstands it all. Gilbert takes Idol and rams his face into the ring steps, and rakes it along the cage, followed by a Hotshot into the cage, but Idol continues to manage to kick out. Both men now have four pin tokens. Gilbert gets the last laugh however, as he blasts Idol with another fireball and covers for the win at 8:25 EST.
ATTENDANCE: myself, BDS, BigCatHawk, Rahl, weirdjerod, neilybob, Holli
MATCH #8 (Portland):
Dynamite Kid vs. The Cuban Assassin
RESULT: Dynamite Kid wins with a top rope headbutt at 8:27 EST.
ATTENDANCE: myself, BDS, BigCatHawk, Rahl, weirdjerod, neilybob, Holli
MATCH #9 (TNA):
Christian Cage vs. Monty Brown
RESULT: This match pits ex-WWE star-turned TNA star vs. ex-TNA star-turned WWE star. Christian Cage has been talking a lot of smack about Monty Brown jumping to the wrong ship, so this one is personal. Christian has trouble getting the Unprettier on Monty, while Monty continuously makes the mistake of going up the top rope and eating the mat. However, Christian manages to nail a one man con-chair-toe on Monty Brown out on the floor, and wins by countout at 8:39 EST.
MATCH #10 (Memphis):
The Fabulous Ones vs. The Moondogs
RESULT: The Moondogs have Steve Keirn in a grind for most of the match, but the ref throws this one out at 8:42. No contest.
ATTENDANCE: myself, BigCatHawk, Rahl, weirdjerod, neilybob
MATCH #11 (TNA):
AJ Styles vs. Christopher Daniels vs. Petey Williams vs. Chris Sabin
-four way dance (originally intended to be a four-way Ultimate X, but I don’t have a multi-person Ultimate X match)-
RESULT: Chris Sabin gets teamed up early, but then Daniels turns around and nails AJ with the Angel’s Wings and knocks AJ Styles out of the match. Petey tries to ambush Daniels after the fall, but eats an Angel’s Wings as well. Daniels eventually takes a handle on things and eliminates the remaining men to win at 8:54 EST.
ATTENDANCE: myself, weirdjerod
MATCH #12 (Memphis):
“Dirty” Dutch Mantel vs. “Wildfire” Tommy Rich
-Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl-
RESULT: This one got hot and heavy in and instant. Blood pouring from both sides, as they spent more time outside of the ring than they did inside of it. Tommy Rich almost had Mantel with a Vertical Body Block, but Mantel kicked out and eventually came back with a driving knee smash to pick up the pin at 9:00 EST.
MATCH #13 (Portland):
Roddy Piper/Matt Bourne vs. “Crippler” Rip Oliver/Kendo Nagasaki
RESULT: Rip Oliver gets Matt Bourne down early, and Kendo Nagasaki wins it with the GREEN MIST at 9:02 EST.
NOTE: for all of the matches that weirdjerod has watched thus far in the night, he has batted 1.000 with his picks on the winners. He also picked Dundee for the next match, and Angle “by at least two” for the final match. Let’s see how he does…
MATCH #14 (Memphis):
Jerry “the King” Lawler vs. Bill Dundee
RESULT: Dundee gets a couple of quick PIN attempts on Lawler early to wear “the King” down, but Lawler fights back. However, Lawler misses a second rope fist drop, and Dundee wins at 9:09 EST with a flying dropkick.
ATTENDANCE: Just myself for the final match.
MATCH #15 (TNA):
Kurt Angle vs. Samoa Joe
-20 Minute Iron Man Match*-
*this match was lengthened to conclude at 9:35 EST when my mom unexpectedly called me, and I couldn’t use COTG as an excuse to brush her off.
RESULT: Angle punishes Joe early in the match, but Joe picks up the first fall at 9:19. Joe: 1, Angle: 0. Angle comes back and pins Joe at 9:24. Score tied at one apiece, with Angle raking two tokens to Joe’s one. (I remove one PIN token per wrestler after each fall for rest time.) Joe takes the next two falls to take a sizable lead before Angle comes back with a fall at 9:32 EST. Angle now has three minutes to tie the score, as he races to beat the clock. However, Joe comes back the next minute to deliver a crushing blow to Angle’s chances with an avalanche-style Muscle Buster to take a 4-2 lead with two minutes remaining. At this point in time, I am rolling the dice as fast as I possibly can in order to give Angle a chance to come back and tie it. Angle latches on the ankle lock, fifty seconds later. However, Angle is at a disadvantage because with the quick falls, the token counts are rapidly falling, making it more difficult for Angle to defeat Joe. This comes to haunt Angle, as he has Joe down a couple of times, but cannot put Joe away at the current token count, and time expires at 9:35 EST, with the score Samoa Joe 4 ; Kurt Angle 3.
Thanks to all of the people who came and joined me in the COTG room at sonofthread.com, and thanks to those who could not be there for the live presentation of the card but have read the written report instead. We’ll have to try to do more of these in the future, and markoda has discussed doing an interactive online tournament of some sort for everyone, using this live php chatroom concept.
