but few people complained when Austin use to do the same People complain(ed) about Austin plenty. But there are more blind Austin marks then there are blind HHH marks, so the voices tend to get drowned out.

I think you guys have made some good points regarding HHH. Your right about how wrestling needs to have a dominant heel...and your right that he's probably just doing what Flair did during his day. I never saw NWA when I was growing up, all we got was WWF...so I was used to Hogan and Demolition dominating the ranks...I started watching wrestling around Wrestlemania 3 or 4, but I do remember the first couple too.
I think there are a lot of people who hate on HHH for no good reason, saying he's a crappy worker etc., but I also still feel strongly that he does the job to guys like Jericho and Benjamin to help him get over in the back, where there probably is a lot of jealousy and resentment about his position in the company. I think the comment about Austin is right as well...he was never happy about doing the job...but his popularity was probably 10 times that of HHH...so maybe he had a reason to be...sort of how Hogan just wouldn't 'pass the torch' to others cause he never saw anyone as 'big' as him (maybe Ultimate Warrior for a brief moment in time).
In the end, I'm a fan of HHH...but still think he's a bit overrated in terms of how good a heel he is, but that probably has a lot to do with the wrestlers I do like (Jericho, Benoit, RVD circa ECW) but I have a bit more respect for him after reading your comments on the board. I just want to see Benoit have a nice 5-6 month run with the belt, with HHH and other heels trying everything in the book to get it off of him, only finding that they just can't seem to better 'The Crippler'...

That's definitely what I'd like to see out of this too. I mean, I would LIKE a nice, lengthy reign by Benoit, but I'll take a 6-monther at a bare minimum. And on that subject, it looks like the WWE has finally abandoned the rapid-fire title changes they've been prone to in the past. Nice to see the belts almost mean something again. Now, about that tag division...

People complain(ed) about Austin plenty. But there are more blind Austin marks then there are blind HHH marks, so the voices tend to get drowned out. I would definitely like to seen Benoit carry the belt for good while. I like the way he has been coming out and dominating people of late. As far as Austin goes, I don't know if it is about people being blind or just that Austin operates in a different realm than most wrestlers ever will. He found a way to connect with people on a very basic level, but that connection is so strong that he is essentially above the standards and rules that apply to everyone else in his profession. That was never more obvious than when he turned heel at WM XVII. Fans did not, and refused to boo him. They almost sold him as a villian when he plastered Lita with a chair, but there was still a great number of people hollering "Hit her again, Steve!" Much like Flair and Undertaker, Austin, for all he has done for the business, has earned the right to call his own shots.

After going back and watching a large number of the matches that HHH had at pay per views in the last couple of years, I have to say that I am fairly impressed. Even injured, he could still put on a pretty good show so long as he didn't have to carry his opponent. I do think that he is one of the better heels, and that Ric Flair being a member of Evolution with him has helped him in this regard. I think that the reason he was the only wrestler to have a lengthy run with the title last year has more to do with the lack of legitimate championship talent that they had on Raw than anything else. True, it was politics as well. But, there were only about three or four guys other than HHH that I could have believed as Heavyweight Champion (RVD, Michaels(but I didn't really want to see him hold the belt again), Jericho, and Orton(but this would have required breaking up Evolution which I don't think should happen yet).
All in all, so long as Raw has more legitimate potential Heavyweight Champions on their roster (like Benoit, Benjamin, Jericho, Edge, and Michaels), I'll be happy seeing more Heavyweight Title Matches that don't involve HHH challenging for or defending the title. Let him wrestle some midcard feuds for a little while, and let someone else receive a Title push.
