The wife and I finally saw this on Sunday; it had taken forever for our local theater to get it in, and then we had to plan around her weekend-oriented work/convention schedule (and the sparse number of showings per say) before we could finally line everything up. It was amazing, and worth everything that has been said about it in the past few months. There were maybe a dozen of us in the theater (1:50 showing on a Sunday in NC? Can't imagine why there weren't more people there...); as we were watching the aftermath (and recap) of the hardcore match, I clearly heard one woman ask her partner "why would anyone do that to themselves?" Clearly, she's not a fan of the sport(s entertainment).

Yeah we picked up the DVD too, but I haven't had time to rewatch it and check out the special features yet.

I've only watched the first 1/2 hour so far. Been busy as the dickens.

Yeah, same here. Plus I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it again; it can be emotionally draining.

I bought this on the week it was originally released on DVD. I liked it a lot. The hardcore stuff really isn't my cup of tea but I know that these are the kinds of Feds out there today where the Stars of Yesterday must go. It was interesting. Kind of like the story of Jake the Snake Roberts I think. Except Randy showed up for shows and gave it his all. After awhile you stop thinking you are watching an actor portraying a wrestler, you are convinced that Mickey Rourke IS a wrestler. Strong performance and he well deserved all of his awards. Not many people mentioned Marisa Tomei but I thought she did all she could with her role too. Very believable and well acted.
Great writing. Superb directing. I am not sure I enjoyed this more than 'Beyond the Mat' but it ranks right up there.
*** out of 4 stars from me.

(For a 4 Star movie - close to perfection I think - rent/buy 'The Reader' with Kate Winslet!)

I finally saw this yesterday. Damn good movie but it fell a little short to all the hype. I'm glad I watched it on DVD.
My brother-in-law couldn't believe the wrestlers actually cut themselves.
The ending ticked me off but Marisa Tomei made up for that big time. I give it 4.5 stars.

I agree about the ending but the way the story was woven made the movie pretty good.

The ending was weird and very un-Hollywood as they didn't resolve anything. It was neat in that it kept me guessing, as I kept expecting one of the possible stock finishes (he gets together with Cassidy, he keels over in the middle of the match, etc.) but they never went that way. Of course, they didn't go ANY way, so I understand some of the frustration there.
For me, though, the real "ending" came when they wrapped up the storyline with his daughter. After that he was clearly in "fuck it -- I'm doing this until I die" mode.

Yeah, I got that too, especially when he looked up and Cassidy had left. I wished he would've beamed the potato salad at that lady at the deli too ("a little more, a little less"). That would've bumped it to 5 stars for sure.
