Now that Joe Torre's tenure as manager of the Yankees is apparently over since he rejected their offer, who will become the next manager of the Yankees?
The top 3 candidates are reportedly:
Don Mattingly- the Yankees current bench coach and, during the previous 3 seasons, the Yankees hitting coach. Mattingly was also one of the most popular players on the Yankees when he played for them. Even though he doesn't have previous experience as a manager, I wouldn't be surprised to see Mattingly get this job.
Joe Girardi- former Yankees catcher and coach who won Manager of the Year last season when he was the manager of the Florida Marlins.
Tony Pena- the Yankees first base coach who won Manager of the Year a few years ago when he managed the Kansas City Royals.

did you guys ever consider ron guidry ? In the poll, I put an option for other. But I really don't think the Yankees will make Ron Guidry their new manager because they're not even certain they want him to return as their pitching coach next year for which his contract just expired. Since Baltimore let Leo Mazzone go as their pitching coach, I know there had been talk about replacing Guidry with Mazzone if Brian Cashman recommends it even though Steinbrenner is reportedly still upset/convinced that Mazzone showed interest in the Yankees then open pitching coach position a couple of years ago only to get more money from Baltimore where he joined the staff of his friend Sam Perlozzo.

Neil, You're right. Guidry was awesome- especially in 1978 when he went 25-3 and won the Cy Young in one of the most dominant years ever by a pitcher. He also won 5 straight Gold Gloves in the 1980s- but that still won't make him the next Yankees manager.

Did you guys ever consider that the Yankees might be suffering from the Curse of Don Mattingly?
True story, Yankee friend told me this. The entire span of Don Mattingly's career on the Yankees, the Yankees were in a World Series drought. When he retired after the 1995 season, the Yankees broke that drought the next year with a World Series victory, and would go on to win four of the next five seasons. Then in 2001, the Yankees hired Mattingly to their coaching staff, and the Yanks haven't won the big one since.
Let's not forget that for years, George Steinbrenner himself would keep Luis Sojo on the playoff roster just for good luck. Even in the later part of his career, Sojo would play in the minors all year long, only to be called up in September just to be put on the playoff roster.
If there were some sort of spooky reason why the Yankees can't win with Mattingly around, then yeah I hope Steinbrenner hires him as manager... and signs him to a long term contract.

Everything I've read and seen points to Mattingly.. I think the main reason its up for debate is because so many people outside NY think he'll crack under the pressure.

Sam Perlozzo and Leo Mazzone are from my little neck of the woods in western Maryland, which is sort of a hybrid Orioles/Pirates region. I was glad to see them together but disappointed they didn't have any success. But if Leo was to become a Yankee, I think the hearts of a lot of people around here would break. (But they'd get over it with a World Series win!)

True on Guidry, and I've also heard the same thing about Mazzone negotiating with the Yanks hurting his chances. I'm hearing that the Yanks will dismiss either Guidry or Joe Kerrigan (the Bullpen Coach) and promote Dave Eiland- who was the pitching coach this season at AAA Scranton. His work with Joba, Kennedy, Hughes and some of the Yankees other young arms was highly touted. The Yankees even had him travel with the big club after Scranton's season ended.

I always liked Mattingly. I think he will get the job, but it's a shame that he will be getting fed to the Wolves.

The Yanks were in a drought before Mattingly got there, and the team never had enough pitching while he was there to win the division. I have this feeling no matter who they pick they make the playoffs next year.

I have this feeling no matter who they pick they make the playoffs next year. Yeah, if I remember correctly, during Mattingly's playing days, the Yankees only made the playoffs in 1995 which was Mattingly's final season and they lost to the Seattle Mariners in that historic Wild Card round of the playoffs. Afterward, Mattingly retired and the Yankees traded the Mariners to get Tino Martinez to replace him.

According to the New York Times, the Yankees are expected to decide on their new manager by Monday and, if Major League Baseball will allow them to make an announcement if the World Series is still going on, could make their selection public by Tuesday: sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3082353

Based on what I heard on Sportscenter today, it sounds like Joe Girardi will be named the new Yankees manager.

Today it was made official that Joe Girardi will be the new manager of the Yankees. And Joe Torre reportedly will become the new manager of the Dodgers. Making Girardi the manager could help the Yankees resign Andy Pettitte as Girardi was Pettitte's personal catcher when he played for New York.
