What follows is an overview of the two part Sudden Death storyline. This covers game editions 2094 and 2095. Author Chad Olson is perhaps best known for his stellar work on the Legends of Wrestling creative team. His insightful analysis provides background information that heretofore did not exist on this board. For that we all owe Chad our gratitude.

Sudden Death 2094-2095
The original Sudden Death series saw a series of firsts in Champions of the Galaxy. For the first time, a winner take all tourney featuring the banishment of a losing team member occurred. For the first time, a team that could challenge the power of the Gladiators of Aethra emerged. For the first time, two women took their feud to the squared circle of the GWF. And for the first time behind the scenes, an artist stepped down to let a new artist share his creative vision for the COTG characters.
The main theme behind Sudden Death consisted of team feuds where the losing team had to banish one member. This was the first interactive poll in COTG history, where promoters would send their votes to Tom based on their fed’s results. Tom allowed promoters to help influence the direction of the GWF’s future.
This two-part storyline saw the emergence of some of the top tag teams in GWF history. The New Order, Mace and Dreggs, arrived on the scene in 2094 to feud with the Gladiators. Vigilante and Soldier of Fortune dropped their formers personas of Galactic Punisher and Tongsoon to form the Mercenaries. The Collector produced the Demons of Hydra, who were originally thought to be Ghengis Khan and Mitsuko. All three teams were top contenders throughout their time in the federation.
On the singles side, Raven joined the New Order and the rest of W.A.R. in 2095 and proved to be a strong force. Future stars Thunder, Pegasus, and Jack of Diamonds started off as rookies in 2095. In the case of Thunder, he served as the Gladiators’ bodyguard, making only occasional appearances inside the ring.
Ms. Liberty, formerly Sweet Thing, joined up with US Patriot in 2094. This paved the way for Cassandra to become Vanity’s new valet in 2095. Equipped with wrestling stats, women’s wrestling in the GWF was now a possibility. Other new game dynamics included the “switch” routine of the Demons of Hydra, which allowed the masked competitors to take advantage of a confused referee. The New Order’s HOLOCAUST finisher was the first roll finisher that couldn’t “miss”.
Finally, the Sudden Death series was the first COTG set not drawn by original game artist Chuck Carter. Larry Snelly stepped up with a different and complex style that was popular among fans at the time. Snelly’s artwork showed great detail and was a dramatic switch from Carter’s artwork which often conveyed great facial expressions.
Sudden Death was a popular series, for the change in artwork and the fan involvement aspect. Many new singles and tag teams emerged that left their mark on GWF history. The banishments saw wrestlers leave the GWF for the first time since the breaking of the Galaxian Code. And this set the stage for the “biggest reunion of all time” in the Revolution series.
