I've always been a bit interested in COTG. I was wondering if I bought the classic starter set for CTOGonline will that be the true begining for the storyline. I'd like to play through the storyline completely in order. I assume that the yearly expansions will come out in order down the road?

2087 (the classic set currently available in COTGonline) was the first set in real-life chronology, but in terms of the game's history, the GWF dates back to 2074, and there are sets that fill in the 2074-2086 years. The nice thing is that the Classic 2074-2086 period is kind of compartmentalized from 2087, so even if you don't run them in chronological order, you don't have to feel like you have an "incomplete" history. The Invasion years of 2088-2090 should be out sometime within this calendar year barring alien invasion or Indiana falling into a hole or something equally catastrophic. Past that, I don't have any info about a timeline for releases, although I'm sure that the historical GWF years in the main timeline will come out sequentially. Rest assured that if they try to get me to jump from 2090 to 2100 or something like that, I'll put up a fight. EDIT: And welcome to the forums! Almost forgot the most important part there! EDIT 2: Thanks to Osk for covering up for my tendency to be unnecessarily verbose.

Welcome! I know your question has already been answered, but let me put it as simply as possible. Yes, the Original Game Edition (GWF 2087) that is available now is the FIRST Champions of the Galaxy game. It was created as being THE stand alone starter set. A newbie to the game starting at that point would begin EXACTLY where COTG creator Tom Filsinger intended. ~ :-Xsk

Briareos asks a good question...and is an example of the fact that CotG players 'are willing to pay to play from the beginning'. It would be wise to give CotG Online consumers this attractive option sooner rather than later. The further out the EC and Classics set releases are...the more 'perfect chronology' becomes a novelty concept...something which it suffered from in the cards and dice world due to it being a retro set that came out 'after' many players had already established a deep history with sets released earlier and dated from 2087 onward. This second tier status is something that can be easily avoided with an intelligent release schedule. As a consumer I'm really hoping the ball won't be dropped on this one.

Agreed.
But I am biased as I am in the Early Classics era.

just to play devil's advocate, but I never got intot the EC stuff, and I'm fine with it starting in 2087 and going forward. Not trying to step on anyone's toes, but just stating there is another point of view out there.

The Classics Era is something that will certainly be presented sooner rather than later for the current game fans, as well as new fans such as braireos who wish to play chronologically .
However, while my personal feelings on the subject mirror LWPD's, Tom has made it clear to the Online staff that he intends to present two 'game packages' to the potential new audience that COTGonline will be agressively marketing to beginning in 2008. One being the Original/Invasion era and the other being the New Beginning Era.
Please keep in mind that the Classics 'product' has trouble standing up against the Original/Invasion 'product' and New Beginning 'product.'
I think we'd all agree that Tom's Classics game editions were intended to be a glimpse at the backstory (if more than that, he himself would've given us 10-12 cards per game year beginning from 2074).
Since the release of these 'prequel' game editions, the storylines and characters within have carved a special place in the COTG mythos...an important place. One that will be coming Online soon enough.
Next up is the Invasion series, following that I'd like to see Classics.

I mostly agree with Osk, and I'm glad there this is some sort of "official" word on the subject. I'm playing out my CPC 2121, my GWF 2087 and soon I'll actually begin my GWF 2122, but I was hoping to start a Classics Era fed soon to eventually lead into 2087. Personally I *loved* Early Classics and I think it would be fun to play a loosely constructed early years fed (about 12-18 cards per year, since after that I think it might get repetitious). But EC was originally part of the "expanded" COTG-verse and as Osk stated, Tom never truly intended that to be the starting point for a promoter's fed. As long as those of us hardcore fans get EC online at some point, I'm fine with it. But if a new player were starting today ... 2087 is where most of us started so long ago, so it makes perfect sense for a new online player to start there if they want to view the "complete" story as Tom intended it. Sorry for the long rant ... now bring on Invasion
