Hi folks...just got my CPC Savagery 2119 booklet in the mail today, so now I can match everything up and give you a read-through and stuff.
Cover
- Rubicon looks MEAN.
Inside
- Trent Lawless starts us off in the beginning! That's a tad different. I wonder if the new format was Mark's response to people criticizing his writing style? Alas, poor Enigma...good as you were, the end was nigh...at least you're going out without ever getting a downgrade. And poor Darla's gone too? She had such potential! I like Tiberius Prell's hook on the Commissioner job...I think he'll make a fine Commissioner...perhaps the best Commissioner since Zachary Carter himself!
All the World's A Stage vs Punks3
- Yay, Taurine and Romulus reunite! Wait, as the "bad guys" in the feud? Oh posh. I dunno...I don't see myself rooting for AtWaS even though Dante IS mega cool, and Jester/Comedy brought back the limericks. In my CPC, I'm in the twilight of 2116 so Smooth has just debuted and he's been giving Brains & Brawn some REALLY hairy matches, so he's already turning into a sentimental favorite.
The Agents of Change vs The True Way
- Viggo's gone too? Wha?!? I have to imagine that this is one of those things Mark didn't plan on. Funny, fat, bald Grunge doesn't LOOK fat or bald...though he does bear a certain resemblance to T.K., so that helps the angle. Grunge and Indigo just seems like such an odd fit without Thayne and/or Viggo. Talisman moves into forced retirement...woohoo!
The Exiles vs The King's Court
- YES!!!! JoD and Scion Nexus together! Holy CRAP that one gets me excited! I'm surprised Colby & Pelf didn't try to s-can JoD, actually. The feuds seem REALLY lopsided, as I can't fathom Excalibur being on par with Jod, and I know Gunnar isn't on Fortune's level. Zed vs Nexus should tear the house DOWN though. But I'm thinking it should have been JoD vs Zed and Nexus vs Fortune, since Nexus and Fortune have bad blood, this whole feud is about JoD and Zed and Excalibur and Gunnar are the guys left. Btw....Exo-King's becoming the Ultimate Warrior? Creepy.
Dynasty vs The Penthouse Suite
- As much as I used to love the guy...why is Prodigy still employed? And in another shoddy, thrown together team? I hope the Cossack Warriors kick the crap outta the Superior Assassins. In fact, I hope Dynasty kicks the crap outta the whole Suite because this line-up does nothing for me. I would have liked to see Colossus go out with some dignity, but again, at least he didn't get downgraded. art-wise, Yuri pretty much looks like Gordo in a fur hat...can't beat that. Xenia...is it me, or did she get worse? The Collector's not very good at this job! The Czar, on the other hand, is coming along nicely...I liked the whole introduction, what with the glove tossing and such...and I dig Czar's new finisher...nice and mean.
And I'm guessing Mark can't be totally in love with his current Penthouse Suite line-up...since they were barely mentioned.
Outlaw Fight Club
- Ha! Just what I thought. Too bad Lower World and Mourn couldn't have been a part of this...this really would have worked better with 12 people instead of nine. C&P try to take out Shylock, but Prell wisely steps in...talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face...who did Colby think was gonna put butts in seats? Brainstorm? What with all the legitimate talent hits the CPC has taken in the past couple of years, losing the only truly homegrown superstar would have been INSANE. Nice backstory on Rhiannon and Cypher...but just how freaking old are most of these OFC people anyhow? And I get why Cypher's there...but I wonder what Colby's game is with Rhiannon. Speaking of Rhiannon is cute, I guess...but the art is kinda bland. Am I wrong, or isn't The BANSHEE'S WAIL and HEIR TO THE THRONE the one and the same? Cypher looks suitably creepy...though, is it just me, or is Cypher's finisher not actually just a surfboard move like Dean Malenko's used in the past. Not that there's anything wrong with that! Pendekar becomes the new Archon, and gives up his "Never Surrender" ability to make resilient comebacks on level 3. The art's not bad, but he's a tad big, IMHO. Speaking off big...nice to see Dominator was eating in his time off. Jeez...this guy looks like a BLIMP. 261 lbs? Is he the CPC's new Buddy Rose, where he REALLY means 612 lbs? It'll take a lot of work to make me like him, as I didn't miss him for a second when the Assassins put him out in 2117. But the OFC concept as a whole? Tremendous...looking forward to it. I'm guessing this is mostly something to keep Shylock occupied until Saboteur strikes.
Savage Kingdom vs Species
- Rubicon looks MEAN. Raven is gone and Wildcat's the smartest (and apparently fastest) former Species member ever. Wow. The CPC's gonna kinda suffer a bit in the box office with some of these losses (Paragon and Mensar last year, Raven and Colossus this year). Rubicon does look rather frightening, and I also rather enjoyed his debut...Mollock freaking out and wiping out Barnabas to Rubicon wiping out Mollock...COME ON, MARK....GIVE US MOLLOCK vs RUBICON NEXT YEAR....ESPECIALLY IF PUMA'S GOING HEEL. *ahem* But seriously...Talon, Mollock, Willow & Quetzal with a new partner (even Gila if it had to be) vs Puma, Rubicon, Desdemona & Darwin's Legacy...how cool would THAT be?) Barnabas doesn't seem like the lying sort...just a half-truth kinda guy...so Puma's either turning on the Kingdom or dying in a couple of years...
All in all, everything was really good but not quite great. With the GWF's new roster, there were few people I was really saying "Why are they here and not so-and-so?" But I can't say the same about the CPC. We lose Thayne & Viggo but keep Grunge & Indigo? Talk about getting the short end of the stick! Raven is REALLY going to be missed, since there's no top heel to take his spot right now, although Rubicon and Barbabas together might be able to pull that off. Prodigy is dead weight on the roster, whereas Wildcat, Enigma or even Mourn would be a better addition (not necessarily to the Suite, but to the CPC overall). Of course, I also really don't like the entire Penthouse Suite roster, and not in the "heel" kinda way. Daeman was a great tag wrestler...with Hydra(x). Prodigy is SOOO over the hill, it's sad. Brainstorm is, and always will be, a midcarder. And Velar, well, she's gotta be one of the longest lasting characters since Anaxis to not have a personality. On the other hand, the "heel" focus is obviously on Species, and I do love them...even though none of the members besides Barnabas have a personality, but - if you remember - that's why managers were invented in the first place.
Again, not Mark's best work, but still really good...I'm sure it's just a transitional thing.
