BOB BACKLUND (low-b) beat Champion LOU THESZ (low-b) eight falls to four to win the belt (Referee: Mark Curtis)
--The winner of the most falls within the one-hour time limit would be the winner and champion. Backlund, still suffering from injuries he sustained last week at the hands of Harley Race and Johnny Valentine, took the first fall with his Atomic Knee Drop finisher. Thesz won the second fall with his Greco-Roman Backdrop finisher, and then he went up 2-1 with the Hammerlock. Backlund won fall number four with the Rolling Backbridge finisher. Backlund then won fall five with a Delayed Vertical Suplex and fall six with the Abdominal Stretch. By this time, several wrestlers had come out underneath the LegendsVision screen to watch the match firsthand. Down 4-2, Thesz came to within one, winning fall seven with the Greco-Roman Backdrop once again. Backlund, though, started pulling away, winning fall eight when he sidestepped Thesz, who, seemingly running out of patience, ran into the turnbuckle and fell backwards into a schoolboy cradle. The challenger won fall nine with the Delayed Vertical Suplex again. Thesz won fall 10 with the Thesz Press finisher, but it was too little, too late as Backlund took two more falls, one with the Sunset Flip and the other after giving Thesz a knee to the head. When the bell rang to signify the end of the 60-minute time limit, both men collapsed on the mat, with Curtis conferring with Howard Finkel at ringside and then raising Backlund’s limp arm to make the title change official. Rhodes, Windham, the Von Erichs and the Rock ‘N’ Roll Express came out and congratulated both men on an outstanding match as they lifted both men to their feet, and then Thesz shook Backlund’s hand and hugged him in friendship before fastening the belt around Backlund’s waist.
