I get a paid day off today in observance of Nevada Day. Nevada Day is officially November 1 because that is the day that Nevada became a state back in 1864. We're "The Battle Born State" because we got statehood during the Civil War even though we sort of cheated to get it because we didn't have the required population yet to go from a territory to a state. But Lincoln needed more Republican votes (different Republican party from today although their roots do go back to this) to get relelected in the Election of 1864 and didn't want to make Utah a state yet because they practiced polygamy and Lincoln didn't want to make Oklahoma a state yet because they were considered too Democratic. So Nevada bypassed those two states (who actually had the required population at the time) and became a state first. . I am so glad it is Nevada Day today because I am enjoying my 3 day weekend.

Huh. That's an interesting holiday -- especially for a paid day off. 1864. That's cute. I got spoiled by being raised in one of the original 13 (and in a city that predates Boston).

Yeah, but does your original 13 state give you a paid day off to celebrate the day you became a state? Seriously, Nevada isn't better than any other state (except possibly Utah ). But I am very thankful for Nevada Day. I work really hard as a teacher and the First Quarter just ended yesterday with all the deadlines such as grades. I'm using the day off today to play COTG and watch some WWE 24/7.

I'm sure I would've noticed, though. So is this a state-wide holiday or just a teacher holiday? Either way, have fun man.

Eh, you teachers and your summers off. Don't you have enough free time? Why do you need one more day? It's just a bunch of kids... (FYI, both my parents were/are teachers, and my wife is a therapist who works in the schools, so yeah, I'm maybe just a little bitter. And tongue is firmly in cheek.)

People in Boston get Patriots Day, which is a Monday in April that they have the Boston Marathon and a 11 AM Red Sox game. Everyone gets off for that too.
Why would you get off on 10/26 if the holiday should be 11/1?

Why would you get off on 10/26 if the holiday should be 11/1? That's cool. I think everyone in Boston should get Patriots Day off too. Why we're observing Nevada Day today on 10/26 when the actual day is 11/01 is a good question. I think it is because there isn't another Friday between now and 11/1 (next Thursday). It really would be more appropriate to observe Nevada Day on 11/1, but I can't complain about a 3 day weekend.

Nevada Day? A paid day off? I'm writing my congresswoman and demanding that the State of Nevada no longer be allowed to celebrate Columbus Day!

Every day is Nevada Day.
(Credit: My dad when I used to whine about how he got "Fathers Day" and we didn't get anything. And he'd say "Every Day is Kid's Day." And then whup my ass.)

I think teaching is a profession that doesn't get near its due. Good teachers are more valuable than gold. I had mostly good ones in my time, so I can't complain. And anyone who's ever seen my mother teach her third-graders (which is nobody here!) knows what can happen when you have a teacher who believes she can turn around even the toughest cases. Sad to say, she's retiring this year to join my dad in the good life! But that's okay, now they can home-school my kids. Just giving the teachers some props. Back to Nevada Day.

(FYI, both my parents were/are teachers, and my wife is a therapist who works in the schools, so yeah, I'm maybe just a little bitter. And tongue is firmly in cheek.) Mark, No worries, most of my family are teachers too. We still have to do the whole 180 day contract, but this at least is an extra 3 day weekend (that I do truly think is well deserved). For the record (not directed at anyone), I really like my job as a teacher. I just believe in doing the right thing. When everything goes right, I don't think there is a better job at all than in being in front of my classroom with my back to the board and teaching my kids and helping them get ready for success beyond high school. I even volunteer my time where I serve every week as a mentor to a handful of supposedly troubled kids. Many days, everything is awesome. Once in a while I feel like it is Hell on Earth. But is is NEVER boring. I work really hard and I play really hard. Most people on this board understandingly probably only think of me as a guy who plays really hard. (And I DO play hard). But that is only during my time off from when I work extremely hard to be a great/dedicated teacher. Edited/reposted for spelling errors- hey give me a break- I teach Criminal Justice. I don't teach English.
