Well, I decided to do something new. I'm going to take a stat that you may or may not have heard of, and show you how it's a bold faced LIE!!
This week is from the television commercials of TRUTH. They are a non-smoking company(which is a good thing), but they fit the facts to work for them.
Have you seen the commercial where they say that 20x more people die from smoking then murder? Well here is how they reached that stat. First, every person who has died they checked if they smoked. Even if they died from something else they were included in the died from smoking stat. Next they only used straight murder. If someone did a murder suicide that don't count! Gang violence(mostly in California) did not count as murder as well, and dang suicide bombings, ethnic cleansing, and other genocidal acts don't cont either. Next which is really sick, sexual murders where not counted once(one of the highest murder crimes in the US). And last, but not least a child who was murdered by any of the above crimes who's parents smoked was counted as a smoking death?!
TRUTH?? Hardly.
I'll be back next week. Until then I'd love to hear everyone's comments on this bull!!!

Good post Rahl. This is coming from someone (me) who has never smoked, drank or did any kind of drugs, but there is nothing worse than anti-smoking zealots. I despise them and I hate smoking!! So what does that say?
Granted, we all know smoking isn't good for you, blah blah, but damn...
I know there are probably many, many more "drinkers" on the board than smokers, but I've never known anyone killed by anyone else while they were smoking in the car, unlike many people who are drunk behind the wheel.
There is one person who I really despise and hopes they rot in hell is Leornard Little from the St. Louis Rams. The guy killed a mother while drunk and still played in the Super Bowl the same year (and he has had an DUI arrest since, but yet, is still playing). I'd be willing to bet that if Little was simply smoking behind the wheel, that mother would be alive today

I still remember when Dana Reeves died of lung cancer and, since she had sang in some nightclubs, all of the anti-smoking zealots were claiming it was 2nd hand smoke that gave her lung cancer.
Really, please....

Wasn't it Mark Twain who talked about "lies, damn lies, and statistics?" This would seem to fit the bill.

I too am both anti-smoking and anti-anti-smoking activist...Check out this Bulls**t...
Currently in Ontario, we are required by law to ask for ID when selling Tobacco to someone who looks under 25...Now, the legal smoking age is 19 here, so naturally, considering the penalty for selling cigarettes to a minor (up to $4000 fine first offense, plus other crap, including instant termination), it's a very good idea to ask for ID if the customer looks under 25...Well, the retards made it a law now....What's this mean for me..?
I have a friend who I've known for over 10 years; he's 23, but he naturally gets ID'd for cigars that he occasionally buys for special occasions...I don't ID him because well, I know how old he is and I know he doesn't carry ID normally...Let's say it's his friend's birthday and he buys a pack of Old Port Cigars...I sell them to him without asking him for ID...
Somewhere outside of town, someone steals a car...We're the only gas station open for miles, so when such happens, the police immediately come to my store and notify me to keep an eye out...Standard procedure is to also confiscate our security tape to see if anyoen fitting the jerk's description came in already from the time the car was stolen...
After they view the tape, if they find something, the Market Manager and Security guy also view it...They see me on the tape sell a pack of Old Ports to someone they believe looks under 25"...I am now unemployed because they "Think" the person I sold tobacco to "looked under 25"...The fact that he's actually above the legal age to smoke is irrelevent...The law states that because he "LOOKS" under 25, I have to ask for ID or I can be fired...
So basically, when my other friend who I've known for 27 years (yes, since I was 1 year old) buys cigarettes from me, I have to ask him for ID because someone ELSE in the store may think he looks under 25...
I love being a target for Anti-Smoking a**holes...

I knew there had to be a reason I didn't like them and their guerrilla commercials ... stupid TRUTH. Well, the reason I hate them is that they're annoying. Also:

Rahl I like the content of the post, but I'd like to know where you found this information. A source would lend a lot of credibility.
I think anti smoking zealots are pretty much like "anti - anything" zealots....or "pro-anything" zealots. Anyone who gets super into a cause and can't seem to talk about anything else is really annoying.

Wow 'Cat that's crazy.
Anytime people start making laws about how people 'look' or what someone 'thinks' they're just asking for the law to be abused, imo.
As for the truth commercials, its too bad they feel the need to manipulate the stats.. there are plently of stats out there they could use without resorting to that sorta thing.
They have great ideas and a good cause, but I think they lose alot of their impact by causing themselves to be seen as zealots.

I think anti smoking zealots are pretty much like "anti - anything" zealots....or "pro-anything" zealots. Anyone who gets super into a cause and can't seem to talk about anything else is really annoying. My source was my friend who works for Phillip Morris USA in their PR department.(he is looking for another job as he doesn't like working for a company who's product kills people). He told me how it was done with a lot of these commercials, I just thought this was the worst. As someone mentioned due to a lawsuit tobacco companies have to pay for these ads. This is actually something they were going to do on their own since they can't advertise on TV. Anyone who smokes could tell you that when they see an anti-smoking commercial they want to have a cig. It's pretty much a ploy to be able to advertise again. I am not trying to defend smoking in any way. I just thought I'd bring this out as I thought it was a stupid way for an anti-smoking company to conduct business. I also hate "scare tactics" in anything, and this is a huge "scare tactic". Rahl

Soapbox Time: We as a nation are slowly but surely losing our individual rights...our apathy and antipathy has made it much easier for the backpocket lawmakers to pass basically whatever the hell they want...1st smoking...next at least in jersey the use of trans-fatty acids in restaurants...and out in good ol Cali...they would love to outlaw spanking as a form of punishment for children...as we a "collective" care more about voting for a one-hit wonder than a tax initiative...i say go ahead and sit...you'll be sorry someday!!!
