Any thoughts on his resignation?? I'm looking up information on Robert Gates (his replacement) right now. Maybe this will be the start of turning things around a little in the middle east.
But I think Rumsfeld just ended up being the fall guy for the Bush regime. Last nights exit polls show that Americans are unhappy with the way the Iraq war is being handled, and somebody had to go.

From what I know there's been a sort of internal battle between Cheney/Rumsfeld and the Bush 41 camp. I don't actually think this was quite a panic move because they had the next guy ready to go. So it was probably coming no matter what. It just happened today.
If I had to guess Bush has tired of the current strategy and wants to get aggressive again with the terrorists in Iraq and felt it was easier to do that with Gates in charge.
Also don't be surprised to maybe see Cheney go and for Rice to step up as the VP.

If Bush wants to show he's going to work with the newly elected Democratic majority in Congress, he's going to have to show this kind of change. So a step in the right direction from Bush 43 and Co.
Personally, I'm all for change at this point. Whatever we're doing ain't working well enough to effect the outcome we want. So whoever's behind the move or what the motivation is, I think it's the right one.

Rumsfield has countless times shown the charges against him aren't some puritanical hearsay, but rather the truth. The Bush 41/Reagan team, be it nostalgia or not, have a reputation for being more incompetent and actually conservative. I'm staying cautiously optimistic.

Rumsfeld was not only losing in Iraq and with the people at home, the guy was a loose cannon...he had to go. His hard-ass tough-guy persona was a boon in the aftermath of 9/11 but has long since worn thin.
And this, despite Bush claiming not long ago that Rumsfeld was staying at his post until his term was over, had to have been in the works for some time. The news of Rumsfeld's resignation broke at around 2 o'clock and not an hour later, Robert Gates was in the Oval Office addressing the nation.

My issue is the kid gloves came on after a few scandals and I think it's really set things back a few years in Iraq. I hate that and it always costs us whenever we go into a place and we're not fighting to win. It was really frustrating seeing the Israel conflict earlier this year. They were absolutely ruthless and it scared off the terrorists temporarily. Why can't we do that?
