For example Jumbo Tsuruta formed 'legend teams' with Baba and Tenryu. The first being a teacher/student:legend/heir apparent paring which was purposely designed to set up the 'passing of the torch'. The second being an example of promotional ace/rising star...seguing the inevitable glass ceiling catalyst to their break up. In other words the teams would be set up with singles headliners with the intention of creating singles programs down the road. In contrast tours by gaijin teams (ex. British Bulldogs, Road Warriors, Steiners) tended to be 'unit' orientated simply because most of the outside talent was brought in for the specific purposes of tournaments or supercards against the regulars. Stan Hansen for example formed strong legacy teams at different points of his positioning with-in the Baba office. Before he became 'tenured' he was essentially an 'equal' who was doing a tour with Bruiser Brody (and Snuka before him)...years later he was a fixture in AJPW and his legacy team with Ted DiBiase had the typical Captain/Junior substructure. The same was true of his later teams with Gordy and Spivey. In New Japan Inoki would dominate with various partners into the mid to late 80's. Mutoh/Hase were one of the most respected tandems of the 90's. The Steiner Brothers would also rate very highly. In terms of longevity the team of Fujinami/Kimura were a consistent force for many years...and Tenzan was the Japanese version of Tony Garea/Bobby Eaton. You can get a more comprehensive historical feel for which teams were booked strongest over the years in All Japan and New Japan by using these references links: AJPW Real World Tag League HistoryAll Japan World Tag Title HistoryMSG Tag League HistoryIWGP & Other Tag Team Title League HistoryNew Japan World Tag Titles LWPD (some possible viewings of interest from the 'Good' Pro Wres thread which provide a glimpse of the aforementioned Tsuruta and Hansen legacy teams would include: Jumbo Tsuruta/Giant Baba vs The Funks 3/13/75 and Tsuruta/Tenryu vs Choshu/Yatsu 1/28/86 and Hansen/Brody vs Steamboat/Youngblood 11/26/82 along with Hansen/DiBiase vs Bockwinkel/Hennig 12/7/85...a good Fujinami/Kimura viewing would be against Murdoch/Adonis 6/13/85)
